A Proposal for a Small Change in Lloyds Open Form

In February Gard published the results of its review of Lloyds Open Form (LOF). Their review indicated a disturbing reduction in the number of LOF contracts, and noted some other concerns with regard to loss of use of LOF in salvage situations.Lloyds Open Form is a classic and, in my mind, cherished, example of the core beauty of maritime. It combines a large number of maritime concepts into a simple device that solves a complex problem.It reminds me of a few of the lines in the song “Wooden Ships” by Crosby, Still, Nash and Young.

Barge Master Wins Innovation Award at OTC

The Barge Master T40 motion compensated knuckle boom crane has been recognized for technological innovation, winning the Spotlight on New Technology Small Business Award at this year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston. Barge Master develops motion compensation systems for the maritime industry that compensate vessel motions, creating a platform that is not moving with respect to the stationary fixed world. The systems are developed to increase the safety and workability of offshore lifting operations.

Irwin F. Edenzon, the retired president of Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division, accepted the Navy League of the United States' Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Award last night. The Navy League presented the award at the annual Sea-Air-Space Black Tie Reception and Banquet at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The Nimitz award honors an industry leader who has made a major contribution to the nation's maritime strength or enhanced national security.

Drydocks World, Maritime World Win Excellence Awards

Drydocks World and Maritime World have won the Excellence Award given by the International Maritime Club at the Golden Bells Awards 2015 - Middle East. Drydocks World Group has won the Best Maritime Conference Award in recognition of their successin organizing the “2nd Mare Forum Dubai 2015,” which held its second edition on the 21st of January 2015 under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdanbin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. “The 2nd Mare Forum Dubai 2015” the Dubai Global Summit of Marine and Maritime Leaders provided an interactive platform to network and debate contemporary themes in the shipping, marine and maritime industries.

Kongsberg Maritime DP Pioneer Earns Award

The Marine Technology Society has honoured Kongsberg Maritime Dynamic Positioning veteran, Nils Albert Jenssen with a distinguished achievement award for his services to Dynamic Positioning. Nils Albert, who is internationally recognised as one of the world's leading engineering authorities on DP, received the award at the DP user seminar, organised by the society, in Houston, 24-25 September 2007. The Marine Technology Society is a highly respected non-profit organisation made up of ocean engineers, technologists, policy makers and educators. "Nils Albert Jenssen has played a key role in the development of DP Software and control systems for almost thirty years. He has also been the driving force behind the evolution of the highly successful Kongsberg systems.

WWL Awarded Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) has been awarded the Heyerdahl Environmental Award 2007 for its commitment to improving the environmental standards in the shipping industry. Over a period of six years, WWL reduced SO2 emissions by 75,550 tons. That is the amount of So2, emitted by the city of London over a similar period. Candidates for Thor Heyerdahl Award Chosen

The committee for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award has nominated shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Norwegian-headed industry and research project FellowSHIP Project and the ProSea Foundation in Holland for this year’s Heyerdahl Award. The committee has now submitted the list of nominees to an award committee, which will choose this year’s winner. The award will be presented by His Majesty King Harald at the opening of Nor-Shipping in Lillestrøm on 12 June.
