A&P Birkenhead Limited and Reddington Finance Limited have reached an outline agreement for the sale and leaseback of some of A&P’s land at Birkenhead. A&P Birkenhead retains ownership of the drydocks, but some surplus land will be sold to Reddington Finance. This is a positive development, as it allows A&P to focus on their ship repair business and allows Reddington Finance to focus on developing surplus land at Birkenhead. Clive Towl, Managing Director of A&P Birkenhead commented “2004 has been the busiest since we re-opened the yard after the receivership of Cammell Laird. We look forward to continuing to grow the business in 2005.”
NorseMerchant Ferries Boosts Freight Capacity
NorseMerchant Ferries has responded to market demand for increased trailer capacity between North-West England and the Republic of Ireland by adding a third vessel to its Birkenhead - Dublin service. With a capacity of approximately 70 trailers, the newly-chartered Leili will provide over 400 additional spaces per week in each direction on this route when she enters service in October. A sister vessel to NorseMerchant's Varbola, currently operating on the Heysham - Belfast route, Leili can also carry 12 driver accompanied units. Sailing from Birkenhead at 03.00hrs, Leili will arrive in Dublin at 11.00hrs, enabling same day delivery. The return sailing from Dublin at 15.00hrs will arrive in Birkenhead at 23.00hrs, allowing next day deliveries throughout the UK.
A&P Birkenhead Scoops “European Shiprepair & Conversion Specialist 2003” Accreditation
Subsequent to an extensive research and selection process, the awards committee at the Institute of Transport Management has decided to present A&P Birkenhead with the “European Shiprepair & Conversion Specialist 2003” accreditation. All major European Shiprepair Companies were canvassed, and this accolade is a true testament to the outstanding company that is A&P Birkenhead. The ever-increasingly popular ITM Awards Programme took place once again, and entailed the canvassing of its members in the Marine sector. The programme was piloted in 1995 and was designed to recognise advances within the Marine sector over the previous 12 months.
Memorial Built for Victims of HMS Birkenhead
A memorial has been unveiled in Birkenhead (Wirral, Liverpool City Region, United Kingdom) dedicated to the victims of one of the worst maritime disasters of the 19th century. HMS Birkenhead, a steam frigate built by John Laird’s shipbuilders in Birkenhead, sank off the coast of Gansbaai, South Africa on February 26, 1852. Out of 638 people onboard, only 193 survived. Many victims were taken by sharks. The tragedy was the first occasion when troops were ordered to stand fast and the protocol of women and children first was used. As a result, all women and children aboard the vessel survived.
A&P Birkenhead Gets Triple Ferry Deal
A&P Group's newly reopened dry dock facility, A&P Birkenhead, has recently completed the dry docking and repairs of Mersey Ferries' 464grt passenger ferry Woodchurch. The Woodchurch is the first of three vessels booked into the yard by Mersey Ferries Ltd, the Passenger Transport Authority and Executive for Merseyside. The three ship contract was won in open competition against other UK ship repairers. The two other ferries, the 303grt Royal Daffodil and her sistership Royal Iris will be dry docked during January and March 2003 respectively. The work content for all three vessels includes general maintenance, minor steel repairs and cleaning and painting the ships hull. First Vessel Booked in at A&P Birkenhead
A&P Group has confirm that it will soon be docking its first vessel at A&P Birkenhead since the facility was purchased in 2001. The European Envoy, a 4,267dwt passenger vessel owned by P&O European Ferries (Irish Sea) will be arriving at the Birkenhead facility at the end of July for a dry dock and repair programme.
The Axe Continues to Swing at Cammell Laird
Insolvent British shipbuilder Cammell Laird Plc is cutting a further 117 staff, a spokesman for its receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers told Reuters on Monday. The spokesman said 34 jobs out of 59 were being shed at its Tyneside operation in northeast England while 83 of 136 jobs were being cut at Birkenhead in northwest England. Cammell Laird went into receivership in April after a series of cancelled orders hit its finances. Earlier this month, the firm, a symbol of the decline in British shipbuilding, announced it was axing 330 jobs on top of more than 600 job cuts made earlier in the year. Last Friday, ship repair outfit A&P Group Holdings bought the plant and equipment of each of Cammell Laird's yards at Birkenhead, Tyneside and at Teeside, also in northeast England.
A&P Birkenhead Welcomes First Vessel
A&P Birkenhead has drydocked its first vessel since A&P Group acquired the facility in 2001. The vessel involved is a 1,537dwt general cargo vessel Kay L, which is owned by German shipping company Reederei M. Lauterjung KG, Emden. The vessel was trading in the Irish Sea area when it suffered rudder problems and had to enter dry dock for repairs. The vessel will undergo some additional general repairs whilst in dry dock. General Manager at A&P Birkenhead, Martyn Drye commented: "Our workforce has moved swiftly to ensure that the dry dock was available immediately ensuring that we maintained an efficient service to the customer. Our engineers are working with the owners Superintendent to ensure the vessel has a speedy return to active service.”
A&P Birkenhead Works on HMS Bulwark
A&P Birkenhead Ltd, part of the A&P Group, has been awarded the contract for the ‘pre-acceptance’ drydocking of BAE Systems’ newbuild HMS Bulwark (L15) prior to its delivery to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The vessel is due to arrive in Birkenhead during early June this year (2004). Whilst in drydock, work will include final removal of the hull launch ‘poppets’ and complete coating of its underwater hull, plus other work as required by BAE Systems. In order to achieve the high standards of paintwork required for the vessel, the hull is to be covered under a special containment system, which will provide protection from the weather and allows heating to be applied to suit the coating application should the climatic conditions not achieve specified requirements.
Bids Are In For Struggling Cammell Laird
Accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said on Wednesday it had received a second management buyout bid for the U.K. shipyard assets of struggling shipbuilder Cammell Laird Plc, which has so far had to cut 600 jobs this year. Cammell Laird entered into receivership after a series of cancelled orders hit its finances, causing it to suspend trading in its shares. The second bid is spearheaded by former executives John Syvret and Brett Martin, a spokesman for the team said, and is for both the Birkenhead and the Tyneside yards. "The bid was put in this morning," he said. PwC has already received a separate management buyout bid from a different team for the Birkenhead yard.

Accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), acting as receivers for the group, said on Wednesday that the latest cuts would see 95 jobs go at Tyneside, northeast England, and 45 redundancies at Birkenhead, northwest England. The company, which currently employs just under 700 workers in the U.K., called in the receivers after a series of cancelled orders hit its finances, causing it to suspend trading in its shares. The decline in the fortunes of Cammell Laird, whose main yard was set up in 1824, marked a further fall in Britain's once-proud shipbuilding industry.

A&P Birkenhead Stays Busy
Since reopening in August last year (2002), A&P Birkenhead has made significant strides to becoming a major force in the northern European shiprepair industry. One of the first operations carried out by A&P Group was to put in place efficient and effective quality systems in all the yard’s departments. This drive has been rewarded with the award of the ISO 9002:2000 accreditation from Bureau Veritas Quality Inspectorate (BVQI), which will also carry out six-monthly audits of the yard. Currently A&P Birkenhead is experiencing one of its busiest periods, having completed a 14-day repair programme onboard P&O’s ferry 14,426 grt European Pioneer, she is immediately followed by the 18,653 grt European Envoy, which will be in drydock for 10 days, and the 12,879 grt European Leader - 14 days.
P&O Euro Ferries Puts 3 Ships With A&P
A&P Birkenhead has won a three-ship contract from P&O European Ferries for passenger/car ferries operating across the Irish Sea. The ships involved are the 14,426 grt European Pioneer, the 18,653 grt European Envoy, and the 12,879 grt European Leader. All three ferries will be drydocked over the coming weeks, the first due to arrive in Birkenhead on July 21. The principle work on all three is deck renewals using the "Sandwich Plate System", patented by UK's Intelligent Engineering. Other scheduled repair work will also be carried out, with the yard remaining very flexible over the requirements of P&O. Intelligent Engineering (IE) has designed and patented the revolutionary technology called Sandwich Plate System (SPS).
A&P promotes Newbuilding Hall
A&P Group has reached agreement with Cammell Lairds Waterfront Park to promote and use the old Cammell Laird yard at Birkenhead. The newbuilding hall, which was built during the 70s by Cammell Laird, then part of British Shipbuilders, was, at the time of construction, one of the most modern covered newbuilding slipways in Europe. In the hall Cammell Laird built a number of vessels for the Royal Navy as well as commercial vessels such as the STAFF tankers. At that time it was destined to make Cammell Laird one of the most sophisticated newbuilding companies throughout the world. However, the newbuilding industry in the U.K. collapsed - with the majority of the world's ship owners looking to the Far East (Japan and South Korea) for new ships at half the price.
European Envoy Completes Refit at A&P Facility
A&P Birkenhead has reported that the recent dry docking and repair of the European Envoy has been successfully completed. The vessel, which is owned by P&O European Ferries (Irish Sea), entered the new A&P Group facility on Saturday 3rd August 2002. The dry docking work included approximately 4.0 tonnes of damaged shell plating, and passenger certificate renewal. New Dog Kennels for Stena Line Ferries
Merseyside engineering firm IPS Marine Fabrications is helping ferry operator Stena Line expand its accommodation for man’s best friend after securing a deal to build a series of bespoke dog kennels. IPS Completes Insulation and Fabrication Contracts
Birkenhead based engineering firm IPS Marine Fabrications has completed a series of contracts for three ship operators. IPS director Paul Smith said the contracts with Whitaker Tankers, and ferry operators Seatruck and Stena showcased the broad range of fabrication and insulation skills IPS can provide. “The job spec of these contracts was really varied and shows how we can save customers time and money,” he said. “For Seatruck we supplied high temperature ceramic fiber insulation for the main engine exhausts.
MPE Refurbises Stena Line Ferries
Birkenhead-based outfitter and manufacturer MPE Interiors has completed two contacts for Stena Line to redevelop the crew and officers' mess areas on two ferries. The contracts involved replacing the mess rooms on the 980-passenger ferries the Stena Mersey and the Stena Lagan at Twelve Quays in Birkenhead. Both ships operate the Birkenhead-Belfast route. MPE Helps on Stena Ferry Interior Refit
MPE Interiors has completed a contract for ferry operator Stena Line to deliver an extensive fit out on the Stena Adventurer vessel. MPE carried out the refurbishment works at the forward end of passenger decks seven and eight on the vessel which operates between Holyhead, on Anglesey, and Dublin Port. "This is another great project for MPE Interiors to win and continues our long standing relationship with Stena Line," said Cliff Grainger, MPE director. "The job follows similar works which we completed on the Stena Mersey and Stena Lagan over the summer. "On this job we have worked on the ‘Stena Plus Lounge’ on Deck eight. This includes installing new seating for extra comfort and creating a more spacious lounge and dining area with a media room and quiet area.
