Dutch MARIN Launches Defense Department

The Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands (MARIN) will combine its defense-related expertize as of July 1 in a new Defense department. MARIN said the aim was to properly coordinate defense activities MARIN-wide with Dutch, NATO and EU Defence partners, to optimally contribute with MARIN's knowledge contributes to an effective navy of the future. Dutch Test Barriers to Prevent Ships from Hitting Wind Turbines

Ship Design: Student Creations put to the Test

Four winning school classes attended  the prizegiving of the ‘design your ship for the future’ competition at MARIN (Netherlands Maritime Research Institute). The winning ship, with the shape of a sailfish, a retractable sail, a frictionless shark skin and a flexible moving tail was  tested in one of MARIN’s model basins.This competition started last year when MARIN tested its 10,000th  ship model. Dutch Minister Visits Damen Shipyards

Netherlands Minister of infrastructure and water management Cora van Nieuwenhuizen visited Rotterdam on 28 January to meet Damen Shipyards Group and other Dutch maritime industry leaders.During the visit Minister of Nieuwenhuizen attended presentations on board a Damen ship, FCS 2610.The ship sailed from the head office of Hatenboer-Water in Schiedam, along the Nieuwe Maas, to the head office of Van Oord in Rotterdam.René Berkvens, CEO of the Damen Group, said: “We were happy to welcome Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen to Rotterdam, and we appreciate her continued interest in, and strong support of, our maritime sector. Fast Small Ship Simulator

Bouncing over the waves at a speed of 43 knots, the director of the Defense Materiel Organization (DMO) Vice Admiral Arie Jan de Waard, and MARIN’s director Bas Buchner, made the first test voyage on the moving ‘Fast Small Ship Simulator.’ This FSSS is built by MARIN and SME partners, Cruden and TreeC, as part of a CODEMO project to stimulate the development of a prototype. MARIN Forms 'Maritime Cluster' Facility

Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) announced the formal investment of 2 million Euros in a large and fast Bull computer cluster (4000 computational cores). This supercomputer complements MARIN’s extensive model basins, simulators and full-scale monitoring tools. MARIN’s President, Bas Buchner, said, “Computational Fluid Dynamics plays an increasingly important role in the optimization of ships and offshore structures. Netherlands Maritime Technology Association Launched

The Netherlands Maritime Technology association has been officially launched on the international stage during the Holland Day at SMM on September 9. Sjef van Dooremalen, Chairman of Netherlands Maritime Technology, unveiled the new name onboard the LCF Zr. Ms. Evertsen in Hamburg to an audience of 250 guests. A new promo video about the Dutch maritime technological sector was also shown. On a national level, the association, company and foundation for the maritime technological sector have been operating under this new joint name since May 8, 2014.

Marin’s New Simulator Bridges Engineering and Operations

On Tuesday, December 10, Peter Noble (President of SNAME) and Robert Hanraads (the Nautical Institute) jointly opened the new bridge simulator at the Marin offices in Houston. They were asked by Marin for this event to illustrate that this simulator was built as a bridge between engineering and operations. Watched by representatives of oil majors, engineering companies and offshore contractors, Robert Hanraads then safely performed the first offloading operation on the simulator.
