Alameda’s Newest Eco-Friendly Ferry, Pisces
The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) and the City of Alameda today announced that starting June 8, Alameda Harbor Bay ferry riders will be treated to a daily ferry commute onboard Pisces, the Bay Area’s newest ferry. Pisces’ interior design responds to Bay Area commuters' desire for convenience and comfort. The ferry has several seating options to maximize passenger comfort, plus room for 34 bicycles, 20% more capacity than similar sized ferries on the Bay. Pisces will initially be used on the afternoon Harbor Bay ferry service to San Francisco, sharing service with the Bay Breeze--the existing primary vessel for Harbor Bay.
More Ferries Ordered
The San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority ordered two more passenger ferries, continuing its mission of expanding ferry service in the San Francisco Bay area, using ferries that are 10 times cleaner than the existing vessels in the bay. The new ferries, each with a capacity of 199 passengers and capable of speeds up to 25 knots will be built by Kvichak Marine Industries, Inc. in Seattle Washington. In the past year, WTA has awarded four new vessel contracts, more than have been built for the Bay Area in the previous 10 years. Charlene Haught-Johnson, President of the WTA Board of Directors, is pleased with WTA’s progress. “We already have two vessels under construction in Seattle, Washington that are planned for late 2008 delivery.
SCI Goes West
As of July 1, the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) has assumed management of the International Maritime Center in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Last year, the Bay Area Seafarers’ Services (BASS) approached SCI about adding a West Coast resource to the services SCI provides to the world’s mariners. The Executive Committee of SCI’s Board of Trustees will manage the International Maritime Center as it is integrated into the framework of the Institute during this transitional year. Two new SCI employees will operate from the Center, serving all of the commercial ports in the Bay Area—a Senior Chaplain and a Community Relations Coordinator. Each brings knowledge and experience of the Port and the International Maritime Center.
S.F. Bay Ferry Authority Gets Approval
Under a plan spelled out in SB 428, by state Senator Don Perata (D-Alameda), a new panel will be created to oversee the development of a proposed network of high-speed ferries serving the entire San Francisco Bay Area. The new panel will be called the San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority. Governor Gray Davis signed the bill last year, giving the Transit Authority the go-ahead to prepare a detailed plan for expanding ferry services in the San Francisco Bay Area for the legislature's approval. The authority's 11-member board will be made up of local elected officials, environmentalists, business leaders and transportation experts; four appointed by the Governor and two each appointed by the Senate Committee on Rules and the Assembly Committee on Rules.
Christening of Gemini, Eco-Friendly Ferry
On Dec. 12, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) christened the first of its fleet of ferries, Gemini, to enhance the region’s emergency response capability and water transit network. Representative Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) and WETA Board Chair Charlene Haught Johnson performed the christening ceremony. Ms. Haught Johnson applauded the Bay Area for coming together to forge strong partnerships to enable WETA to build a fleet of ferries that are revolutionizing the ferry industry.
Break Ships in the Bay Area?
According to the News-Times, San Francisco, just a brief distance from Suisun Bay, is where the Ghost Fleet vessels are located that Bay Bridge Enterprises wants to bring to Newport for shipbreaking. It is a much larger city than Newport, with its own industrial areas. Why can't those vessels be taken apart there or elsewhere in the Bay Area, several Newport residents have asked, instead of in Oregon? There are two old U.S. Navy shipyards in the Bay Area, but both are closed down. One is the old Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard in southeastern San Francisco, on 638 acres of waterfront. In the mid-1950s, it employed 8,500 civilians in building and repairing ships. But, according to a FAS Military Analysis Network website article, it ceased operations in 1974.
News: California to Build 31 New Ferries

WETA Awarded Blue & Gold Fleet Five-Year Contract
Water Emergency Transportation Authority Awards Ferry Operating Contract to Blue & Gold Fleet. At its October 6 Board of Directors meeting, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) awarded Blue & Gold Fleet ("B&GF") a five-year contract for the operation of WETA's San Francisco Bay Ferry services. San Francisco Bay Ferry, which recently assumed operation of the Alameda/Oakland and Harbor Bay Ferries, provides daily commute and excursion service between Alameda, Oakland, San Francisco, and Harbor Bay. In early 2012, San Francisco Bay Ferry plans to launch new ferry service between South San Francisco and the East Bay and to assume operation of the City of Vallejo's Baylink ferry operating between Vallejo and San Francisco.
Hanson Acquires Tidewater and Moe Sand
Hanson PLC's subsidiary, Hanson Building Materials America, has acquired Tidewater Sand & Gravel and Moe Sand Co. for $44 million in cash. Tidewater is privately owned and headquartered in Oakland. The company has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area construction industry with high-quality construction grade aggregates since the mid-1950s. For the year ended December 31, 1998, Tidewater had unaudited sales revenue of $15.5 million and operating profit of $6.4 million. Tidewater carries out sand dredging from long-term leases which provide access to sand reserves in the San Francisco Bay. In 1998, it sold more than 1.6 million tons of sand and gravel from its three strategically located distribution facilities in the Bay Area.

Crowley's Bay-Area Tugs Relocate to Port of Oakland
To better serve its Oakland ship assist and escort customers Crowley Maritime Corporation is relocating its tugs to Berth 9 in the Port of Oakland effective Friday, June 16. The move, eight miles away from Crowley's previous terminal at 10th Avenue, will allow Crowley to provide faster service upon receiving a customer's ship assist request. Crowley tugs will be based closer to most customer operations and will be able to work with greater ease in the expanse of the Outer Harbor. Tugs will no longer need to sail through the Oakland Estuary to reach most vessels. Crowley tugs, which were once a fixture in San Francisco Bay from the early 1900s to 1996, returned home in 2004 to once again provide service to area customers.
Crowley Expands Tug Business in Northern California
Crowley Maritime Corporation announced today that it has purchased the tug boat business of SeaRiver Maritime in Northern California, effectively doubling the size of Crowley's tug fleet in the San Francisco Bay Area. The two new Crowley tugs are the Goliah (4400 BHP) and Resolute (6800 BHP), two azimuth stern drive tractor tugs built in 1997 and 1996, respectively. The purchase of SeaRiver follows Crowley's reentry into the Bay Area in 2004 and the subsequent relocation of Crowley's Oakland terminal from 10th Avenue to Berth 9 at the port in 2006. China Plans Bohai Bay Economic Hub in the North
The central government is considering plans to upgrade regional cooperation between Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province to build a trilateral economic sphere in the Bohai Bay area, according to Xinhuanet. The Bohai Bay area is considered China's third economic engine, alongside the Pearl and Yangtze river deltas. New Rescue Boat to Begin Service in Bay Area
The Bay Area USCG's newest heavy surf rescue boat are the workhorses of search and rescue stations. The 47-ft. motor lifeboats' primary missions include search and rescue and law enforcement. The new MLB's are self-bailing and will return to an upright position in eight seconds or less if overturned. The boats are built to pass through heavy surf as high as 20 ft., and attempt rescues at sea in the most severe weather conditions. The new MLB's are gradually replacing the older, slower 44-ft. MLB's currently in service. The new boats can reach 25 knots in calm seas and 13 knots in 15-foot seas, twice as fast as the 44-footers. The boat is built by Textron Marine and Land Systems of New Orleans.
San Francisco Bay Area WTA Appoints New CEO
On October 30, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority Board of Directors appointed Steve Castleberry as the WTA’s new Chief Executive Officer. He will take the helm on January 1, 2004. Castleberry has been serving as the WTA’s manager of System Planning since shortly after the inception of the organization. Prior to joining the WTA, he served as deputy director of the Alameda County Transportation Authority. Marinette Marine Workers Get $500K Training Grant
According to a report from the Green Bay Press Gazetter, Wisconsin’s Bay Area Workforce Development Board will receive a $500,000 state grant to train new and existing Marinette Marine Corp. workers ahead of a pending contract to build 10 additional Navy combat ships at the shipyard. Spring Start for New Ferry Boat Construction
Shipyards submitted construction bids in October for the first two Bay Area Water Transit Authority (WTA) vessels. The contract will be awarded in the summer of 2006, with the first boat delivered by late 2007. The vessels will be used as spares until the South San Francisco to East Bay Service is ready for operation in 2008.
Coast Guard to Conduct San Francisco Bay Waterways Study

Golden Gate Ferry Captains Stage One-day Strike
The Golden Gate passenger ferry system, California's largest, was shut down on Friday by striking boat captains, disrupting service for thousands of San Francisco Bay-area commuters in a wider labor dispute over wages and benefits for transit workers. The 20 ferry pilots who work for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District walked off the job for the day to protest what union officials have criticized as bad-faith contract bargaining on the part of management. The Golden Gate service operates five ferries making 42 crossings a day - carrying roughly 8,500 passengers - between San Francisco and the Marin County communities of Sausalito and Larkspur on the north side of the bay.

ClassNK Opens Durban Office
ClassNK, the Japanese-based classification society has opened an office in Durban, Republic of South Africa in response to a significant increase in survey business in the Durban and Richards Bay area.
