ACL Recognizes Safe Liquid Cargo Handlers

American Commercial Lines presented Marine Environmental Stewardship Awards on Wednesday, July 16 in Houston, Texas, recognizing 35 customers for safe handling of chemicals, petroleum products and other liquid cargos. The customers recognized by ACL safely handled over two billion gallons of chemicals, petroleum products and other liquid cargoes with the barge transportation company in 2013. Renovations Sought at Kiel Canal

In the course of a press panel discussion in Hamburg hosted by Port of Hamburg Marketing, port and business representatives from centers along the Kiel Canal and the Hamburg Port Authority jointly called for the reconstruction without delay of the fifth lock chamber and the renovation of the two existing large lock chambers at Brunsbüttel. In the medium term, business in the port and industry regard the straightening out of the Eastern stretch of the canal and its deepening by one meter as indispensable measures.

Henry Named Propeller Club Maritime Person of the Year

The International Propeller Club of the United States named James L. Henry the Maritime Person of the Year at its international convention last week in Tampa, Fla. Henry is Chairman and President of the Transportation Institute, a leading maritime industry association. Henry is also a founding Board Member of the Maritime Cabotage Task Force, the largest coalition ever to promote America’s Jones Act fleet. The award, which the Club awards annually, recognizes the awardee’s contributions to the commercial maritime industry in the United States and internationally.

Fire on Stolt-Nielsen Barge at Uerdingen

Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stolt-Nielsen S.A. reports that during the early morning of November 21, the crew of the SNTG Motor Tank Barge, Stolt Rotter dam discharging nitric acid at Bayer Uerdingen near Cologne on the River Rhine noticed fumes coming from the double bottom of the barge. The local authorities and fire department were alerted immediately. The captain and crew coordinated their emergency response with shore personnel and the emergency authorities. The crew was evacuated as a result of an engine room fire caused by nitric acid leaking from one of the ship’s tanks containing 270m3 of product. As a safety measure, the barge was lowered to the river bottom.

Stratos Announces Newly Elected Directors

Stratos Global Corporation announced that Sir Robert Walmsley and Mr. Michael Bayer were elected as new members of the Corporation's Board of Directors at its annual general meeting held May 11, 2006. Sir Robert Walmsley was Chief of Defence Procurement at the UK Ministry of Defense ("MoD") from 1996 until his retirement from public service in 2003. Prior to his MoD appointment, Sir Robert was a career officer in the Royal Navy, where he rose to the rank of Vice Admiral in 1994 and served for two years as Controller of the Navy. Sir Robert is also currently on the Board of Directors of British Energy Group plc., Cohort plc, EDO Corporation and General Dynamics Corporation.
