J.Ray McDermott Begins Construction on Casino Barges

The Houston Business Journal has reported that J. Ray McDermott Inc has begun construction on two specialty barges for Harrah's Entertainment Inc. The two casino barges currently under construction will become part of Harrah's Horseshoe Casino expansion project in Hammond, Ind. Each measures 276 feet long by 102 feet wide and 22 feet deep, with a weight of about 1,700 tons. They will be combined with four other barges being built elsewhere to create a 564-foot long, 320-foot wide casino vessel.

Nam Trieu Begins Construction on 56,200 ton Vessel

According to VNS, Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, under the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group, began construction of a 56,200-tonne vessel, the first of three vessels for Japan’s Lavender Maritime S.A. The 623 ft. will be built under Japan’s NK Register in 22 months. Nam Trieu has also signed contracts to build four multi-purpose vessels worth $17m and vessels to transport automobiles capitalized at $2 billion. Source: VNS

Woodside Begins Construction of Pluto LNG Project

Woodside Petroleum has begun construction of the Pluto liquefied natural gas project. The first phase of the Pluto project will include a single liquefied natural gas (LNG) production train with forecast production of 4.3 million tons per annum (mtpa) (4.8 mtpa at 100% capacity) connected by a 180km, 36-inch offshore pipeline to a platform in 85 meters of water. Site preparation has been underway since January 2007, after Woodside received environmental and heritage approval to begin work on the project's storage tanks and export facility. Preparation work for the gas processing plant, where the production train will be located, has also started, according to Woodside.

NASSCO Begins Construction of Product Carrier

General Dynamics NASSCO began construction of the second ship of its new class of product carriers. The shipyard is scheduled to lay the ship’s keel in June and deliver the ship to U.S. Shipping Partners in the second quarter of 2009. In August 2006, NASSCO received a $1b contract from U.S. Shipping Partners to build nine ships. The ships will be double-hulled, 600.4 ft. in length and displace 49,000 dead weight tons. With a cargo capacity of about 331,000 barrels, the ships are designed to carry petroleum and chemical products in Jones Act trade between U.S. ports.

Halter Begins Construction of Three Second Generation Hvide SDM

Halter Marine, Inc. has begun construction of three second generation Ship Docking Modules (SDM) at its Lockport, La. shipyard for Hvide Marine, Inc. The new tugs, designated SDM Mark II, follow the three original Halter-built SDMs, New River, St. Johns and Escambia. Two of the new vessels, Suwanee River and Peace River, are scheduled for delivery in 1999, and Kissimmee River, the third Mark II, will be delivered in 2000. The patented, double-ended 90 x 50 ft. SDM design, which requires only two crew members to operate, was conceived by Erik Hvide, chairman and president of Hvide Marine and refined by the Elliot Bay Design Group, Seattle, Wash. The design is critical to maneuvering large ships in and out of narrow ports and harbors.

Vinashin Begins Construction of Container Production Plant

The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) recently began construction of a container production plant in Lai Vu commune, Kim Thanh district, located in the northern province of Hai Duong, according to VNA reports. The plant, the first of its kind to be built in Vietnam, has a capacity of 30,000 TEU per year to meet the increasing demand from both local and international fleets operating in Vietnam. The plant will be built, at an estimated cost of over $22 million, jointly by Vinashin container company and its Taiwanese partner, Toong Goen. Scheduled to be put into operation in late 2006, the plant will help reduce transport costs for local businesses and will also generate about 1,000 jobs for the province. Source: VNA

EBDG Adds to Team

Roy Neyman has joined Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) as Project Manager, bringing with him nearly thirty years of marine industry experience with both government and commercial ship design, construction, and operation projects. David Wright has joined EBDG also, bringing more than 16 years of drafting and design experience. In his role as Marine Designer he is currently supporting the design of a series of landing craft vessels that will soon begin construction at Kvichak Marine Industries.

General Dynamics Awarded $661M Contract

U.S. military shipbuilder General Dynamics Corp. said the Navy had awarded it an additional $661 million to complete the construction of the next two ships in the DDG 51 AEGIS Class of naval destroyers. The Falls Church, Va.-based company said in the statement that the agreement is a modification to its 1998-2001 DDG 51 Class multi-year contract with the Naval Sea Systems Command. The company said its Bath Iron Works unit would begin construction of the DDG 99 and DDG 101 in 2001, with delivery anticipated in 2006.

NASSCO Cuts Steel on APT "ECO Tanker"

General Dynamics NASSCO started construction of another ship in its commercial shipbuilding backlog, starting construction of a second “ECO” tanker to be built for American Petroleum Tankers at a steel cutting ceremony in its San Diego shipyard. U.S. Rep. Scott Peters signaled the beginning of construction by pressing a button to cut the first piece of steel. NASSCO began construction on the first tanker in September 2014. Sri Lanka Begins Building Berth At Eastern Port

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has begun construction of a $16 million berth in the eastern Trincomalee Harbor to increase cargo handling, according to ports ministry officials. Work on the new berth, which will be able to handle both break-bulk and container traffic and would accommodate vessels up to 50,000 tons, is expected to be completed by July 2001. Trincomalee Harbor, approximately 150 miles northeast of the capital Colombo, currently has two privately run berths to handle flour and cement.

$21.2 Billion Canal Proposed

Thailand is expected to begin construction soon of the Kra Canal from the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Thailand which would allow ships to bypass Malaysia and Singapore. While the long discussed project has in the past been tripped up by environmental concerns, it appears there are no remaining objections and support in the Thailand government is strong for the project. It is estimated that the project could be completed in six years.

Deep Down Constructs Carousel System

Deep Down, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: DPDW), an oilfield services company specializing in complex deepwater and ultra-deepwater oil production distribution system support services, announced that it has completed the design and has begun construction of a 3,200 metric ton Carousel System, which is scheduled for completion early in the third quarter of 2010. Upon completion the Carousel System will be located in the Gulf Coast, to facilitate the handling of umbilicals from transportation vessels onto the Carousel, and with the ability to store up to three separate steel tube umbilicals for projects in the region.

BAE Systems Starts Construction on GulfMark PSV

BAE Systems’ shipyard in Alabama has begun construction on the first of two platform supply vessels (PSVs) for GulfMark Americas, Inc. Executives and employees from both companies gathered recently at the BAE Systems’ facility in Mobile to oversee the initial cutting of steel for the vessel’s first module, which is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2014. The BAE Systems-built 300-Class Green DP2 vessels are designed by MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting, Ltd. of Poland and will be based on similar PSVs currently under construction for GulfMark abroad. The new vessels will be U.S. flagged and will support the anticipated future demand in the Gulf of Mexico offshore market, as well as other areas around the world.

Lockheed Martin Team Gets $198m for Construction of LCS

The U.S. Navy awarded a Lockheed Martin-led team nearly $198m for construction of the Navy's third Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). This is the second LCS awarded to the Lockheed Martin team. The Lockheed Martin team will begin construction in the first quarter of 2007 at Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, LA. The ship will be delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2009. The U.S. Congress authorized and appropriated the funds for this additional ship in the fiscal year 2006 Department of Defense Appropriations Act. Lloyd’s Register is to class all six of the next series of large liquefied natural gas (LNG) ships ordered by Qatar Gas Transport Co Ltd (NALIKAT) for the fifth train of the Qatargas II project. These ‘Qmax’ ships will be the world’s largest LNG ships. They will be twin-skeg, driven by two diesel engines and fitted with re-liquefaction plant. They will transport gas from Qatar to the US. Three of the ships will be built at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), with a cargo capacity of 266,000 cubic metres, and the other three at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) with a cargo capacity of 263,000 cubic metres. Both yards have recently re-organised their production plants to accommodate the construction of these giant ships.

Hornbeck-Leevac Announces Expansion Of OSV Fleet

Hornbeck-Leevac Marine Services, Inc. has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Hornbeck Offshore Services, Inc., has begun a new vessel construction program to significantly increase the size of its seven-vessel, state-of-the-art offshore supply vessel (OSV) fleet. A contract has been signed with Leevac Shipyards to immediately begin construction of two ultra deepwater vessels with four to follow. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in February 2001. BAE Systems Cuts Steel, Begins Construction on Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge. BAE Systems has begun construction on the MV Magdalen, an 8,500 cubic yard capacity trailing suction hopper dredge for Weeks Marine, Inc. Executives from the two companies gathered this week at the BAE Systems Mobile shipyard to oversee the initial cutting of steel for the vessel’s first module, which will weigh 130 tons. When complete in 2014, the entire vessel will measure 340 feet long and 79 feet wide, with a draft of 27 feet.

US FERC Approves Sempra LNG Export Project

U.S. regulators on Thursday approved Sempra Energy's bid to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal in Louisiana, opening the door to a significant expansion of the American role in global gas trade. Sempra's Cameron LNG facility was the second gas export project to get the green light to begin construction from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the first since 2012, when FERC permitted Cheniere's Sabine Pass project. With the FERC approval in hand, Cameron will likely soon receive its final permit from the Energy Department allowing the facility to export gas to all countries, which would make it the only project outside of Sabine Pass fully licensed at the federal level.

Tsuji Heavy Industries Jiangsu begins construction the first of two LNG-powered 5,000 dwt vessels for NOR Lines. The contract to build the two 5,000 dwt vessels was signed in October 2011 and construction has now begun with owner's representative and classification society DNV surveyor in attendance.
