Seastema Autopilot Achieves DNV GL Type Approval

Naval automation and navigation systems supplier Seastema said its SEAS-PILOT HCS autopilot system has been certified with the MED/4.16 Type Approval Certificate of Conformity by DNV GL.With this result, Seastema, a Fincantieri company, becomes the only Italian manufacturer, and one of the first worldwide, of a certified autopilot system in conformity with the new European regulation MED (Marine Equipment Directive) 2019/1397, the highest international standard in the marine sector.The…

Oregon County Won't Block LNG Terminal

A coastal Oregon county overwhelmingly rejected a ballot measure aimed at blocking a proposed natural gas terminal dealing a blow to what was the latest in a series of efforts to thwart energy projects across the Pacific Northwest. The measure, had it passed, would have banned transport of fossil fuels not intended for local use through Coos County, located about 200 miles (322 kms) south of Portland. Around 76 percent of votes were cast against the measure, with 24 percent in favor, according to unofficial results posted on the Coos County government website late Tuesday. "This ballot measure was not a good measure by any means, and I think (the voters) were able to see that," Coos Bay's mayor Joe Benetti, who opposed the measure, told local newspaper The World.

ABB’s Azipod Propulsion for Superyacht

ABB will deliver electrical propulsion and power systems to a new luxury superyacht. The 100+ meter LOA vessel, Zoza (working title), is scheduled for delivery in 2018 and will be built by Benetti shipyard in Livorno, Italy. The owner of the ship selected ABB’s Azipod propulsion at an early stage of the design process, after prioritizing energy efficiency and passenger comfort. The vessel will feature two Azipod C propulsion units which will bring maximum maneuverability whilst producing minimal noise and vibration. “ABB was chosen because of its vast experience in the passenger vessel field and global service network. We have worked with ABB in earlier projects and have become convinced of the many benefits of Azipod propulsion and life-long support for our yacht”…

With its coastline of 7,800 km, Italy is expediently nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea with the surrounding waters creating a tremendous resource for Italian economy. Businesses linked to the sea, including ocean technology firms, contribute significantly to Italy’s gross domestic product totaling more than $40 billion and representing 2.6% of total GDP. The Italian shipyard industry ranks among the top 20 in the world with ship building and boat-building accounting for 64% of the industry turnover, totaling 6.3 billion Euro in 2012, and Technological Equipment placed at 2.2 billion Euro. Italy is also a world leader in yacht production with more than 49% of the market share.

MTU's New Generation Series 2000 Yacht Engine

MTU will be presenting its propulsion and system solutions at the International yachting “Festival de la Plaisance” in Cannes from September 9-14, 2014. Visitors will be able to discover the extensive portfolio of the Rolls-Royce Power Systems subsidiary at Stand JAS-025. An advanced Series 2000 M96 yacht engine which meets US emission stage EPA Tier 3 (for leisure craft) will be on view for the first time. “The latest generation of Series 2000 engines stands out with optimized acceleration and low fuel consumption. The engine meets EPA Tier 3 emission limits using in-engine technology only and without having to resort to exhaust aftertreatment”, explains Dr. Michael Haidinger, Chief Sales Officer at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

Fraser Yachts' 5th Sale in 10 days

Fraser Yachts announced this morning its fifth yacht sale in just ten days. Whilst the summer period is traditionally a quieter time for yacht sales 2014 seems determined to continue the positive path it set out on at the beginning of the year. Last week the 26m ELENA B from Cantieri di Pisa was sold by Oscar Romano, quickly followed by the 35m Benetti PARADIGM sold by Michael Selter in San Diego, the 44m CRESCENT 144 currently under construction at Crescent Yachts in Canada which was sold by Neal Esterly also in San Diego and the classic motor yacht CAPELLA C, sold by Richard Earp in the Monaco office. Now EVIL ZANA has been added to the list, a 38m Sunseeker sold by Antoine Larricq also in the Monaco office.

Yacht Solutions at Italthai Marine has expanded its facility and tripled its superyacht yard capacity in response to the overwhelming demand for space in Thailand’s first dedicated superyacht facility in Bangkok. Since the partnership began in January between Yacht Solutions and Italthai Marine (ITM) at Samut Prakarn in Bangkok Yacht Solutions has received more enquiries for shipyard work than ever before and has already undertaken work on 43-meter SY Douce France, 45-meter MY Big Fish, 52-meter MY Elysium, a 60-meter Oceanco MY, 62-meter SY Lamima and 40-meter MY Amoha.

Wood Forever Pact: New Criteria for RINA Green Plus Yacht

A Monaco yacht show dedicated to the Green philosophy through numerous initiatives aimed at boosting environmental awareness in the world of pleasure craft. On Saturday 28 September, aboard the 55-meter Ocean Paradise built by Benetti shipyards, an event was held which left a notable green footprint on the decks of the super yachts: leading classification company RINA Services and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation joined forces to promote the sustainable use of wood in the yachting industry.

Boat Show at Miami Beach Registered Strong Sales

Attendance at the recent Miami Beach Boat Show based on concession sales and number of people using show transportation at the free-to-the-public event, was up more than 7 percent. Most importantly, notably strong sales activity was reported by numerous builders including Fairline, Viking, Ferretti, Hatteras, Westport and Marquis and brokerages including Allied Marine, HMY and Merle Wood, among others. “The show was a tremendous success this year,” said Andrew Doole, senior vice president and COO of Show Management.

Navis Wins DNV Autopilot Approvals

DNV MED-B certification opens yacht market for Navis AP4000 autopilot. Helsinki-based Navis Engineering Oy has passed an important milestone in the yacht sector, after receiving MED-B type approval for its latest generation type AP4000 autopilot from classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Issued for a five-year period, the MED-B certificate provides assurance that the product complies with all the relevant international standards imposed on marine equipment of this type. The approval covers equipment delivery to newbuildings or existing vessels for retrofit.

NAIAD Acquires VT Motion Control Group

USA Naiad Maritime Group, Inc. and VT Group plc (VT) announced Naiad Maritime Group’s completion of the acquisition of the collection of businesses known as the VT Motion Control Group, including Naiad Marine Systems, Maritime Dynamics, Vosper Motion Control and Vosper Stabilizers. The acquisition was led by John Venables, former Group President of the VT Motion Control businesses, with 27 years in various engineering and executive capacities at the companies. Venables will continue to lead the business as President & CEO of Naiad Maritime Group. Knight & Carver Honored as Boatyard of the Year

Knight & Carver YachtCenter has been honored by the American Boat Builders & Repairers Association (ABBRA) as the nation's most outstanding boatyard for 2007. The organization's annual Boatyard of the Year award is made annually to the U.S. Accepting the marine-industry award on behalf of Knight & Carver at the recent ABBRA awards ceremony in Atlanta were repair yard manager Mike Alvarez and production manager Giovanni LoCoco. Known for specializing in megayacht refits, Knight & Carver will soon complete a major refit of Helios, a 194-ft Oceanco-built motoryacht that has undergone an extensive five-month renovation and upgrade. The yacht's traditional European styling has given way to a more glamorous, contemporary decor, reflecting the owners' lifestyle.

International Seakeepers Society Announces Megayacht Program

The International SeaKeepers Society will host a press conference on September 22 to introduce its new Yacht Builder Partnership Program, whose initial membership includes Oceanco, Feadship, Lürssen, Christensen Yachts, Delta Marine, Trinity Yachts and Benetti. Yacht builders can join SeaKeepers as Yacht Partners for a $25,000 fee and will work with the Society by introducing their clients to Society membership. In exchange, Yacht Partners use the SeaKeeper Partner logo in their advertising and marketing and participate in social functions. The partnership also encourages fellowship between yachtsmen. Costa Crociere Receives Yacht Design Award

Pier Luigi Foschi, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Costa Crociere Spa, was on hand at the Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa to collect the prize awarded to the Genoese company for the construction of the Costa Fortuna, the new 105,000 gross tonnage vessel due to enter into service at the end of 2003, which will be the largest cruise ship ever to fly the Italian flag. On October 11, the Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa was the venue for the “Yacht Design Award 2002”, presented to leading figures, shipyards and shipping companies that have made outstanding contributions to seafaring through pleasure vessels and cruise ships based on cutting-edge technology and design.
