Bergen Tankers’ newly converted liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel—Norway's first—has recently entered service. The 49.25-meter vessel, Bergen LNG, is being operated by Gasnor (Shell) in the Bergen area and on the Norwegian west coast to supply the LNG-fueled passenger ships operated by Hurtigruten and Kystruten. Bergen LNG has completed several LNG bunkers for ships, and has distributed LNG to many industrial and land facilities in Norway, Bergen Tankers said. The 850…

Bergen Tankers’ 95-meter-long chemical and product tanker Bergen Viking has returned to service following its conversion from diesel-electric to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion. Delivered in 2007, the Rolls-Royce powered vessel supplies diesel and petrol along the Norwegian coastline in trade for Statoil as part of a fleet of six vessels owned by Bergen Tankers AS. Bergen Viking’s retrofit saw four of the ship’s original six diesel generating sets replaced with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C6 generating sets.

Tips on Reducing Ship Operating Costs

Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of Tote, Inc., is the featured Keynote Speaker at the SHIPPINGInsight Fleet Optimization Conference, October 22-24, 2013.

While there are indications that the shipping industry is starting to emerge  from the doldrums of the last six years, signals remain mixed. Moore Stephens reported in June that shipping confidence has risen to its highest point since 2010. Indeed, there are signs of a new wave of speculative ordering of new tonnage, propelled by bargain-basement prices from shipyards desperate to fill slots and a reported influx of capital from private equity sources. A primary driver for the surge of orders is the improvements in fuel efficiency of new ship designs over older ships.

Feature: Innovative Coastal Trader

An advance in hydrodynamic design has been endorsed by Norwegian energy group Statoil, as the prospective charterer of an innovative newbuild intended for coastwise distribution of oil products. The 4,200-dwt vessel contracted by Bergen Tankers will employ a diesel mechanical propulsion layout based on twin azimuth thrusters incorporating 'pulling' propellers. The project represents the first application of the Norwegian-developed Azipull system in the tanker market, and champions the principle of redundancy, conferred through the use of two, independent propulsion lines. The engineering and propulsion arrangements selected for the 90m coastal tanker have been shaped by exacting requirements as to maneuverability, design efficiency, safety and transport service dependability.

Design: Contract for New Product Tanker Design

A contract covering the design of a 4,200dwt oil product tanker has been won by NVC -Design. It represents the first ship to be built to a concept developed by Rolls-Royce, a design which combines a tailor-made hull design with a diesel mechanical propulsion system based on twin Ulstein Aquamaster Azipull azimuth thrusters with pulling propellers. This design has been given the type number NVC 604 PT. The vessel has been contracted by Norway's Bergen Tankers AS, and it will be built by RMK Marine Shipyard in Turkey, scheduled for delivery in September 2005. Rolls-Royce is to deliver the design and the Azipull thrusters. The concept is intended to provide a number of advantages…
