Blount-Barker Shipbuilding Formed, Barker Named CEO

Blount-Barker Shipbuilding Corp. was recently formed, and James A. Barker has been named the President and CEO of this new venture. Blount-Barker, based in Warren, R.I., specializes in the design and shipbuilding of tugboats, cruise ships, high speed ferries and dinner and passenger vessels. The new company takes over the activities of the Blount Marine and Blount Industries entities, and operates as a separate corporation. As part of the new venture, Barker assumes management of Blount's shipyard and personnel, with the option to purchase the operations should they be sold in the future. "Jim Barker brings complementary experience that will greatly enhance the capabilities of the new Blount-Barker venture," said Luther H. Blount, founder of Blount Marine and Blount Industries.

New Equipment at Blount Boats

Blount Boats has made significant upgrades to its physical plant thanks mostly to a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation¹s Maritime Administration. These grants benefited a number of shipyards around the country and were made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Thanks to these grants, Blount Boats has installed a significant amount of new capital equipment including a Hydraulic Shear, a Proform Brake Press, a Hydraulic Plate Roller and a Big Swing Lathe among other equipment.

Blount Delivers 130-ft. Crowther Catamaran

The 442 passenger, fast catamaran Atlanticat was delivered to it’s hailing port of Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Monday, July 21, 2003. The vessel, built for B.B.O., LLC will be operating as Acadian Whale Adventures out of Bar Harbor, Maine and used for off shore whale watching during the summer months and commuter service in Key West, Florida during the winter. The 7,200 hp aluminum catamaran is powered by (4) Cummins KTA-50 engines; ZF4600D gears with (2) Cummins ONAN 95 kW generators supplying the ships service power.

Delivery: Blount Delivers 130-ft. CAT

American Builder Makes Good in Cruise Industry

The U.S. shipbuilding industry has not been too successful in the cruise market, but one American builder has found a comfortable niche in the trade, not only building ships, but marketing and operating them as well. The "ships" are relatively small but they are well known in the U.S. and Canadian tourism markets and carry a high number of repeat passengers. Captain Luther H. Blount, 82, considered the father of adventure cruising, is also the founder of American Canadian Caribbean Line (ACCL), a cruise line that probably enjoys the highest repeat passenger rate in the entire cruise industry. Blount established Blount Industries shipyard in 1949 after building a small catamaran out of old oil drums for the local oyster trade.

Blount/Barker Appoints New Senior V.P.

Blount/Barker ShipBuilding, Warren, R.I. has elected Jacob A. Stevens III as its new senior vice president. A well-known shipbuilder, whose career highlights include the construction of six 92 ft. (28 m), 4,000 hp Marci-Class Z drive tug boats in under 20 months for Moran Towing, Stevens will be responsible for all shipyard operations including engineering, design, labor, purchasing, scheduling and working with outside contractors. Prior to joining Blount/Barker, Stevens was production and project supervisor at Washburn & Doughty Associates. While there, Stevens implemented an in-house CAD technology to facilitate quick design adjustments and e-mail communication with subcontractors.

Blount-Barker Signs Contract For Sea Wolf Marine Tug

This past August, Blount-Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with Sea Wolf Marine of Bayonne, N.J. to build a 2,400-hp, 85-ft. (25.9 m) double chine, all welded twin-screw tug set for delivery in April 2002. Bristol Harbor Group has been contracted to modify the Blount classic 85-ft. (25.9-m) tug design to take advantage of CNC (computerized numeric controlled) cutting. The tug will be powered by two CAT 3512 engines; 4:1 twin gears and two 65kW generators will supply ship service power. Keel cooled and equipped with two, four-blade stainless steel propellers measuring 70-78-in. in diameter, the tug will be used for marine towing along the inland and intracoastal waterways on the East Coast.

The new 85-ft. tug, Mister T built by Blount/Barker Shipbuilding was delivered to its port of New York City on December 11. The vessel, which will be used for harbor and ocean towing of bulk material barges, is a 2,400 hp twin screw tug powered by two Cat 3512 engines; 4:1 twin gears and two kW generators will supply ships service power. The tug is keel-cooled and equipped with two four-blade propellers measuring 78 in. in diameter. The vessel is also equipped with two pushing winches and a 100,000 lb. Almond Johnson towing machine. The construction of this vessel was based on the classic Blount design of the tugs Pathfinder and Usher built in 1969. The hull and superstructure was modified by Bristol Harbor Group utilizing CNC cutting technology for lofting and cutting.

Shipbuilding Career Day at Old Dominion

The Shipbuilding Repair and Maritime Career Day Event 2010 was held in the Ted Constant Convocation Center on March 30 in Norfolk, Virginia. About 700 students and 70 teachers from different schools in Hampton Roads area participated in this daylong event. This year the scope of this event was extended to include maritime industry. The event offered an educational and fun-filled environment for middle and high school students to learn about various career options in shipbuilding, repair and maritime industries. The event was held from 8.00am till 3.00pm.

Bristol Harbor Will Modify Tug

Bristol Harbor Marine Design (BHMD) was recently awarded the contract from Blount/Barker Shipbuilding, of Warren R.I., to modify the design of an 85 ft. tug. The new tug is based on an 85 ft. tug currently under construction at the yard, the design of which was developed by BHMD and based on a classic Blount design. BHMD will take advantage of Computerized Numeric Controlled (CNC) cutting for the hull and deckhouse modification. Two CAT 3512 engines and 4:1 Twin Disc gears will power the tugboat. Two 65kW generators will supply the ship’s service power. The tug will be keel cooled and equipped with two, four-blade stainless steel propellers measuring 76-in. in diameter. New Passenger Ferry for Governors Island

U.S. shipbuilder Blount Boats together with naval architecture firm Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) has been awarded the contract to design and construct a new passenger-only ferry for Governors Island, New York by The Trust For Governors Island. The vessel will provide passenger ferry service between Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan and Soissons Landing on Governors Island, New York. “Blount Boats is honored to have been chosen by the Trust to build another iconic vessel for New York Harbor,” said Marcia Blount, President of Blount Boats.

Over time, the Blount shipyard has built 363 vessels, including such iconic designs as the 130-foot, 600-passenger Miss Liberty. Built in 1952, the vessel is believed to have carried more total passengers than any other vessel in the world. Hull number 93, built in 1955, the “Blount 65’ made its debut and was an immediate success with ferry, commuter and excursion operators. Just under 65’ long, it was an important “break point” in Coast Guard regulations. During the late 1950s, Blount designed the Botruc for the offshore oil and gas industry.

Powered by twin diesel engines through Twin Disc gears, the tug’s hull and superstructure plans have been contracted via Bristol Harbor Marine Design, which will utilize CAD/CNC technology for all lofting and cutting. The tug will be keel cooled and equipped with two, four-blade stainless steel propellers measuring 70-78-in., as well as two pushing winches and an Almond Johnson towing machine. Blount-Barker Signs Contract for Whale Watch Catamaran

Blount-Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with a B.B.O., LLC of Portsmouth, New Hampshire for the construction of a 124 ft. Whale Watch Catamaran for operation in Bar Harbor, Maine. The vessel designed by Crowther Multihulls of Sydney, Australia will operate both seasonal whale watch tours and high-speed commuter service. The 124 ft. x 36 ft. catamaran designed with a main, mid and upper deck will accommodate 444 passengers at a loaded operating speed of 40 knots. The vessel’s structure will be designed to DNV Rules and Regulations for the classification of high-speed light craft and built to U.S. Coast Guard Subchapter K Rules and Regulations.

Blount Barker Signs Contract For South Ferry Vessel

Blount Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with South Ferry of Shelter Island, N.Y. to build a 101-ft. double-ended ferryboat. The vessel designed by South Ferry and Dejong & Lebet, Inc. is being built to service the half-mile crossing of partially protected inland waters between Shelter Island and the South Fork of Long Island. The 101' x 39’ x 10’-5” ferryboat designed with one open deck and one side island for crew and passengers will be built to USCG Sub Chapter ‘T’ Rules and Regulations for 149 passengers. The ferryboat is scheduled for delivery in June 2002. The all-welded steel ferry to operate on protected inland waters will be powered by two 400hp Detroit Diesel Series, Six Cylinder DDEC Main Propulsion Engines with Twin Disc MG-516 gears (4.5:1).

Cruise Ship Returns to Erie Canal

Grande Mariner was Stranded on Canal System During 2011 Flooding. The M/V Grande Mariner, a 96-passenger cruise ship that was stranded for more than two months because of flooding in 2011, today returned to the Erie Canal for a new season of cruising America's most storied waterway. The ship, and a sister-ship, M/V Niagara Princes, both owned by Blount Small Ship Adventures in Warren, R.I., was among a handful of ships stranded on the New York State Canal system because of destructive high waters in August and September brought on by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
