Case Study: Samalaju Port’s New Bulk Handling Facilities

Paul Charlton, Managing Director of BMT WBM’s Machinery Group discusses the new bulk handling facilities being built at Samalaju Port in East Malaysia. In its efforts to efficiently service the anticipated increase in cargo which will be generated by industries relocating to the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd, a Malaysian government-linked company, is investing approximately RM1.89 billion ($500 million USD) in the emerging port of Samalaju in East Malaysia.

BMT WBM Scientist Udy wins Kevin Smith Prize

BMT WBM’s Brisbane-based Graduate Scientist, Danielle Udy, was recently awarded the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland 2014 Kevin Smith Prize for her honours research. The Royal Geographical Society of Queensland presents medals to the highest achieving student majoring in geographical science at three major Queensland universities – James Cook University, The University of Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast.  Danielle’s research identified atmospheric circulation patterns that were linked to recent flood events within the Brisbane River Basin to enhance flood forecasting potential.  She will be presenting this research at the upcoming annual Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society conference in July.

BMT Innovation Recognised in AWA Awards

BMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced that the Hawkesbury-Nepean River and South Creek model, developed for Sydney Water has been awarded the Program Innovation Award at this year’s Australian Water Association’s (AWA) New South Wales (NSW) Awards. BMT developed the TUFLOW FV (estuarine and riverine) component of the model, a core modelling tool which is used in many environmental modelling projects. Sydney Water is Australia's largest water utility, supplying water, wastewater, recycled water and some stormwater services to over 4.6 million people. BMT WBM to Showcase TUFLOW at World Bank Seminar

BMT WBM ( (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, a leading international engineering and risk management consultancy, is delighted to announce that it will be presenting its TUFLOW flood and hydraulic modelling software suite at the World Bank’s Workshop ‘Flood Model Showcase’ event on September 23rd and 24th 2014 in Washington DC. The purpose of the workshop is to present common flood problems and the best-in-class models and tools that can be used to not only assess and mitigate risk, but also to educate decision makers in order to reduce exposure and vulnerability to flood related hazards. It will be an opportunity for World Bank task teams and staff to see the models in action and to compare their capabilities in detail.

Solomon Islands Capital Needs to relocate to Combat Tsunami

BMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of the BMT Group, a leading international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has partnered with Buckley Vann town planners and the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland to develop a comprehensive climate change adaptation plan for the provincial capital of Choiseul in the Solomon Islands. The capital is located on Taro Island, a small coral atoll within Choiseul Bay, mostly less than two metres above mean sea level. Coastal hazards such as tsunami and ocean storms present a significant risk to the Taro Island community, and these hazards will be compounded in the future with climate change and sea level rise in particular.

BMT WBM Supports AQUIS Great Barrier Reef Resort Project

BMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, the leading international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has provided critical inputs to the Environment Impact Statement (EIS), in the areas of flooding, water quality and coastal processes for the A$ 8.15 billion AQUIS Great Barrier Reef Resort Project proposed in Cairns in north Queensland. The EIS has been prepared by Flanagan Consulting Group for the proposed integrated resort and casino project featuring accommodation for up to 12,000 guests in eight hotels and suite towers; a 33 hectare artificial lake and 40 hectare resort ‘island’. The project also includes an 18 hole championship golf course and a sports and recreation precinct as well as an environmental management and conservation precinct.

BMT WBM Wins Hydraulic Assessment Project for Queensland

BMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, is delighted to announce that it has won the bid to provide a Comprehensive Hydraulic Assessment as part of the Brisbane River Catchment Flood Study (BRCFS) for the Queensland Government. Given the significant logistical challenges and technical complexities, BMT has tailored a bespoke and innovative, industry leading approach underpinned by international best practice. The project forms part of a broader framework of the Brisbane River Catchment Floodplain Studies currently being undertaken by the Queensland Government in response to the Queensland Flood Commission of Inquiry to provide a comprehensive plan to manage the Brisbane flood risk.

BMT Oceanica Is Lead Consultant for Australia Aquaculture Development Zone

Marine and coastal environment specialists, BMT Oceanica (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, announced today its appointment as Lead Consultant for the Western Australia Department of Fisheries (DoF) in a project to establish an aquaculture development zone. BMT Oceanica, in partnership with BMT WBM and the University of Western Australia, will play a key role in the strategic assessment of the proposed Mid West aquaculture development zone in the southern Abrolhos Islands, off the west coast of Australia. As part of the Western Australia Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, a number of technical studies need to be conducted.

BMT Plans Opening of Two New Offices in Australia

BMT JFA Consultants, a subsidiary of international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, BMT Group, says it plans new offices in both Perth, Western Australia and Brisbane, Queensland in order to better support its clients’ requirements and provide space for expansion. The new Perth office will combine BMT’s strategic ports and harbours and machinery consultancy expertise into a single location in Perth by bringing BMT JFA Consultants and BMT WBM into the one office. This will improve its overall service offerings to local government, mining and private sector clients in Western Australia. Australian Coal Port Expansion Contract

BMT & Adani Mining Pty Ltd (Adani) to design expansion at the Adani Abbot Point Coal Terminal at Abbot Point, north of Mackay, Queensland. The collaboration will involve BMT engineers from Australia (BMT WBM) and India (BMT Consultants (India)) working closely together with Adani at its head office in Ahmedabad, India. The proposed ‘T0’ expansion of the coal terminal at Abbot Point will have a capacity of 70 million tons per annum of product coal and together with the existing ‘T1’ terminal, will deliver a total capacity of 120 million tons per annum.
