Marine News showcases the best of North America’s 2017 workboat deliveries. There is something for everyone. Notwithstanding the lingering offshore energy downturn, there were plenty of bright spots for North American shipyards in 2017. If a hull was delivered in 2017, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For starters, it is always exciting when a domestic yard delivers a vessel – or multiple vessels, for that matter – to foreign buyers. We can compete in a foreign arena; on price, quality and on-time delivery. This year was no different. No less important is the environmental footprint of a vessel, and there was plenty to report on from that angle in the past 12 months. The domestic waterfront is indeed getting greener and cleaner.

Florida based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Boksa Marine Design said it has kept bust over the past few months, with many of its 2017 projects having progressed from design and engineering phases on some and build-to-water on others. Boska provided an update on several of those projects. J&M Metalworks of Green Cove Springs, Fla. has been working on the initial phases of construction of a 140’ passenger vessel. The vessel was designed by DeJong and Lebet, Naval Architects of Jacksonville, Fla..

Custom Steel Boats, Inc. of Merritt, N.C., in collaboration with Ted & Todd’s Marine of Beaufort, N.C., announced a new construction project. Custom Steel Boats is building a 70-foot steel hull lobster boat, Two Dukes, for Captain Eric, Inc of Seaville, N.J. The vessel will be used in the waters off of New Jersey as well as North Carolina to catch lobster. The vessel was designed by DeJong and Lebet in Jacksonville, Fla. to meet the needs of the customer. After design approval by the owner the vessel was computer lofted by Boksa Marine Design located in Lithia, Fla.

The 78’ research vessel designed and engineered by Boksa Marine Design (BMD) in 2015 is headed to the building phase beginning in June. BMD contracted with the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) in February 2015 for the design of a new vessel to replace its current research vessel, the 71’ R/V Bellows. Originally built in 1968, FIO has operated the research boat since 1979 as a floating laboratory for scientists and students studying in the waterways of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas.

North River Boats’ formula for success: anchored in a diverse portfolio and customer base. Tucked away in Roseburg, Ore., North River Boats began simply enough in 1974 by building jet powered boats to run shallow, technical white water rivers. Over time, the company also developed a solid reputation for jet boat designs. Later, as sport fishing regulations, seasons, and species evolved, North River expanded to build deep vee outboard powered recreational boats to fish larger rivers, estuaries and the ocean. The firm is also known for another reason: its diversified production of hulls, delivered to an equally wide range of clients, both domestic and foreign.

Boksa Marine Design informs it has signed a contract with a Florida-based oceanography institute for the design and engineering of a new 78-foot coastal class research vessel. The new boat will replace an existing vessel which has been used as a floating laboratory for scientists and students studying in the waterways of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas for more than 35 years. “The vessel has a rich history of scientific education and discovery here in Florida, and we hope the new boat will continue the institute’s ongoing mission,” said Nick Boksa, president of Boksa Marine Design.

Boksa Marine Design, Inc. is pleased to announce its recent hire of Jeffrey Kuenning, who will join the Boksa Marine Design team as a naval architect and marine engineer working in the Lithia, FL office. Kuenning will have an immediate impact on the development of a variety of custom yacht and commercial marine design projects for the company. Kuenning comes to Boksa Marine Design with 10 years of experience developing a broad range of marine design expertise including structural and mechanical design, stability analysis and engineering project management.

BMD provide naval architecture services for two commercial vessels. Boksa Marine Design, Inc. (BMD) has provided hull, structural and outfitting design for two recent Workskiff built boats, a 25’ RIB law enforcement boat and a 31’ RIB salvage and towing vessel. “We’ve been fortunate to partner with Workskiff on these two projects as well as many others over the years. Their boats help clients meet the challenges faced on the water and efficiently operate in all weather conditions,” said Nick Boksa, President of Boksa Marine Design. BMD managed the entire design of both vessels.

The use of small craft by terrorist organizations and domestic terrorist cells is a worldwide threat as demonstrated by the bombing of the USNS COLE. The attack on Mumbai, India, in November of 2008, brought the danger to the forefront. Nations realized that to combat this asymmetrical small craft threat, a similar small craft defense – not replacing, but in parallel with traditional larger platforms – is required.

55' Sport Fishing Trawler To Be Designed For Chinese Customer, Builder By Boksa Marine Design . Boksa Marine Design is currently working with Xiamen South Coast Marine Yacht Building Co., Ltd. to develop the design for a new line of 55' Sport Fishing Trawlers. The trawler is expected to meet the growing demand for sport fishing boats in the Chinese consumer market. Much like the rest of the Asian yachting and boating market, the Chinese market is growing quickly. Production boats - specifically sport fishing boats, cruisers and mid-size luxury yachts - are seeing more and more interest from an increasingly affluent Chinese consumer base. Built to China Classification Society ( CCS ) rules, the sport fishing trawler will measure 55' in length with a 17' beam.

Boksa Marine Design, Inc. has teamed up with KonaCat to develop the KonaCat 85' Passenger Catamaran. This fast catamaran design can carry up to 200 passengers and 5 crew members. The particular vessel will be designed to cruise at speeds above 30 knots. The ferry will be constructed with Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) under the KonaCat Fast Build Kit System . Expected custom design and build time is just 6 months. Located in Mobile, Alabama, KonaCat is a builder of custom composite catamarans. Their fast build system ensures timely turn around times on custom designed catamarans.

Boksa Marine Design and Custom Steel Boats developed the CS 85. Designed specifically for an avid SCUBA diver and his family and friends, the CS 85, an 85 ft x 22 ft expedition style motor yacht, combines accessible exterior spaces with liveable interior spaces. There is a large dive locker located in the lazarette with easy access to the large swim platform. An Opacmare Transformer provides a large swim-up deck for diver access to the water. The deck crane, located at the aft end of the boat deck, allows for use of the crane over the aft end of the boat to handle large items such as a shark cage. Below decks, there are 3 guest staterooms for up to 6 guests and an option for 1 or 2 crew staterooms for up to 4 crew. An efficient steel hull and bulbous bow round out this green yacht.

Custom Steel Boats, Inc. of Merritt, N.C. announced the signing of a contract with the Chatham Area Transit Authority located in Savannah, Gia. The contract is for the construction of a 67-ft S-Class 150 passenger ferry. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2011 and will be delivered to Savannah for use in transporting passengers to and from the International Trade and Convention Center located on Hutchinson Island. The vessel was designed by DeJong and Lebet in Jacksonville, Fla. to meet the needs of the Chatham Area Transit Authority. After design approval by the United States Coast Guard the vessel was computer lofted by Boksa Marine Design located in Lithia, Flda. The first load of steel for the vessel was delivered from Metals USA in Mobile, Ala. on October 5, 2010.
