DEME Holds Naming Ceremony for Two New Dredgers

DEME hosted a digital naming ceremony for its two newest dual fuel trailing suction hopper dredgers built by Royal IHC.The 8,300 m³ Meuse River was officially named by the Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Lydia Peeters and the 15,000 m³ Bonny River by Els Verbraecken, Chief Financial Officer at DEME.When both vessels joined the fleet, they had a full order book and directly set course to their projects. But DEME planned to bring the vessels home for a few days of celebration before they set off again.

OSV Orion Fueled with LNG in Germany

The world’s largest LNG bunker vessel ‘Kairos’, operated by Nauticor, has supplied DEME’s next generation offshore installation vessel Orion, this first such ship-to-ship bunker transfer at the Port of Rostock.Orion is currently at the Liebherr construction yard in the Port of Rostock, where it is being outfitted with a 5,000-ton crane. Fairway Dredging Project Remains on Track

Port of Hamburg is continuing its dredging projects on the Elbe River as per plan. The second hopper dredger named Bonny River has been conducting dredging operations on the federal stretch and taking the spoil to the UWA - underwater dredged material disposal site at Medemrinne, from October.Built in 2018, the ‘Bonny River’ has a hold capacity of over 16,000 cubic meters; consequently having a highly efficient performance level.The holding area near Brunsbüttel and the widening work on the WSV - federal waterways and shipping stretch are finished. "Bonny River" TSH Dredger Delivered

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Bonny River built at Royal IHC’s Chinese partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard was recently delivered to the Belgian dredging company DEME. The TSHD features a number of advance technologies, and is driven by controllable pitch propellers and transverse thrusters from Schottel. DEME Installs MOG Export Cable

Offshore services provider DEME has completed the installation of a subsea export cable for Belgian grid operator Elia's Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) ahead of schedule.The installation of 85 km of subsea export cable was done using its cable installation vessel 'Living Stone', said the dredging and marine engineering specialist. The cable connects Elia’s Offshore Switch Yard to the shore station Stevin at Zeebrugge, as well as the Rentel wind farm Offshore Substation.‘Living Stone’ collected the cable at the manufacturer Hellenic Cable in Greece , transported it to the site in Belgium and performed a flawless cable installation, offshore jointing and four pull-ins.

Bonny River Joins DEME Fleet

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME is investing in a new generation of trailing suction hopper dredgers which will be trendsetting in coastal protection and dredging hard soils.DEME ordered newest generation trailing suction hopper dredger  'Bonny River' at Royal IHC."Thanks to the combination of unique characteristics such as an extremely long suction pipe, a large transport capacity with limited depth and an additional heavy duty rock draghead, the multidisciplinary ship can be used effectively in shallow water and in hard soils.," DEME said in a press release.With the 'Bonny River', DEME is responding to the macroeconomic trend of maritime sand extraction at greater depths and further offshore.

Dredger Bonny River Launched in China

DEME's latest trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), Bonny River, was launched at Royal IHC's partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard in China and is due to be commissioned and put into operation in the coming weeks.The TSHD has a capacity of 15,000 m3 and a maximum dredging depth of 102 meters.According to Royal IHC, Bonny River combines various functions, such as the ability to dredge hard soil with its heavy duty suction tube combined with the ability to reach great depths with its XXL tube.Environmentally friendly aspects such as minimizing turbulence with its closed process water circuit, installation of dual-fuel engines and CLEANSHIP & Green Passport notation make Bonny River a versatile TSHD, Royal IHC added.

DEME Names Second LNG-fueled Dredger

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Scheldt River was officially named  at the DEME head office in Zwijndrecht, Belgium. The dredger was named by Veerle Hegge, the wife of Bart De Wever, Mayor of Antwerp. The 8,400 m³ Scheldt River is the second dredger in the DEME fleet equipped with dual fuel engines. The highly innovative vessel can operate in LNG mode, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, almost eliminating sulphur, NOx and particle emissions. LNG is intrinsically clean and there is no need for exhaust gas cleaning systems. Scheldt River was built at Royal IHC’s shipyard in the Netherlands. The new vessel is part of DEME’s multi-year fleet investment programme, focused on further increasing efficiency, both in terms of productivity and environmental performance.

DEME Orders World’s Largest Cutter Suction Dredger

Royal IHC said it has been awarded a contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 164m-long, 44,180kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) for DEME in Belgium. The vessel, Spartacus, will be built in the Netherlands for summer 2019 delivery. Spartacus will be the world’s first CSD powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), following on the order for the first LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) Minerva and Scheldt River, and the LNG-ready Bonny River, that are currently under construction at IHC’s shipyards.

C-Job Designs Flettner Freighter for Switijnk

Revolutionary Wind Assisted Propulsion design will be applied to 8,000 DWT General Cargo vessel. The Dutch shipping company family Switijnk has contracted C-Job Naval Architects to develop a Rotor Sail-equipped design to meet their specific loading and sailing profile. The contract follows the substantial media attention for the 4,500 DWT Flettner Freighter (the FF4500) which C-Job Naval Architects developed as part of the European Union Interreg project SAIL. Taking the project name of FF8000, the design will be for a dry cargo ship with 8,000 ton deadweight. Although based on the existing FF4500 design, the new design will include numerous modifications.

Although based on the existing FF4500 design, the new design will include numerous modifications.

Hijacked Singaporean Ship Released in Nigeria

The crew of a Singapore-registered container vessel, Safmarine Kuramo, hijacked off the Nigerian Coast earlier this week, were released unharmed on Saturday (Feb 6) following efforts by Nigerian authorities. All 25 crew members on board, comprising nationals from India, South Africa, the UK, Thailand and the Philippines, are reported to be safe. Nigerian authorities had secured the release of all crew members and the vessel at 1.20am this morning, 5 hours after a report was first received by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). “There were no Singaporeans on board the vessel,” a statement from MPA said. "MPA worked with the company on the safety of the crew and vessel," the statement said. Safmarine Kuramo is managed by Maersk Line.

Pirates Kidnap Four Seamen off Nigeria

On Monday, 19th October, armed pirates attacked and boarded a refrigerated cargo ship underway off the Niger Delta. They stole ship’s cash, destroyed equipment and kidnapped four crewmembers before escaping. Authorities have been notified. There are currently no details relating to the identity of the attacked vessel or the location of the kidnapped crewmembers. This is the first incident reported at sea off the Niger Delta in five months and has taken place 100 NM further west than the spate of kidnappings which took place earlier this year. It comes at a time when the Nigerian Navy are conducting increased patrols of the approaches to the Bonny River, and these patrols may have forced this criminal gang to look into operating in this wider area of West Africa.

US Conditions of Entry for Vessels from Nigeria

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has announced that it will impose conditions of entry on vessels arriving from the Federal Republic of Nigeria (excluding vessels arriving from certain ports) with effect from June 26, GAC reported in its daily Hot Port News Report. The USCG is authorised to impose conditions of entry on vessels arriving in U.S. waters from ports that it has not found to maintain effective antiterrorism measures. Ports in the Federal Republic of Nigeria were found to not be maintaining effective anti-terrorism measures, with certain exceptions. Beginning June 26, 2014, the below conditions of entry will apply to any vessel that visited a non-excepted Nigerian port in its last five port calls.

Allianz Piracy Study

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS), an insurer of ships and cargo, has released a study suggesting its clients adapt their approach to marine insurance as the threat of piracy off the Horn of Africa continues to grow. In addition, the study points out that crews entering dangerous waters must be prepared to handle an attack, and it calls for a more coordinated solution to the current wave of piracy. In a study entitled “Piracy: An ancient risk with modern faces,” AGCS suggests that special war insurance policies should be used to meet the needs of ships in high risk areas. AGCS also identifies a number of practical responses that crews can take when passing through piracy zones…

Feature: Maritime Mission Impossible Accomplished

By Capt. In 2002 the globally operated Korean engineering and construction firm Daewoo E & C Co., Ltd., secured a project order from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria to construct a gas gathering plant on two concrete barges, to be positioned in the Awoba Creek near the Sambriero River. This gas gathering plant would be connected with a pipeline to the Cawthorne Channel Integrated Project (CCIP). The CCIP is a gas-gathering project, which is a big step forward in contributing to the "flare out" target date in 2008 of the numerous gas flares, as mandated by the Nigerian Government. On December 19 and 22, 2003, respectively, the Process Barge and the Control Barge were safely put on the underwater foundation in Awoba, and first gas is expected by Spring 2004.
