Container Shippers Ordered to Testify in US Investigation

The U.S. Justice Department has ordered top executives from several container shipping lines to testify in an antitrust investigation into an industry that is the backbone of global trade, the companies said on Wednesday. The world's biggest container shipper, Denmark's A.P. Hans Jakob Kruse has Died

Hapag-Lloyd mourns the loss of former Executive Board chairman Hans Jakob Kruse, who led the company from 1973 until 1993. On February 4, Hans Jakob Kruse died in Hamburg at the age of 84. He was the chairman of the Hapag-Lloyd Executive Board for two decades from 1973 until 1993. “Hapag-Lloyd is mourning the loss of a visionary and beloved chairman, whose substantial contribution shaped our company as well as the global shipping industry,” said Michael Behrendt, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd. Following an apprenticeship as a shipping agent, Hans Jakob Kruse began his career in 1964 as a representative of Hapag and Norddeutscher Lloyd in Australia. In 1967 he returned to Germany as the head of Canada and Australia services.

Ship’s Boy to Executive Board

Hapag-Lloyd executive board member Adolf Adrion is retiring at the end of the year after over 50 years with the company. “Adolf Adrion is leaving us as a shipping expert who put his excellent expertise and experience in the service of Hapag-Lloyd for more than 50 years and also assumed many honorary posts in the maritime industry. It was only fitting that he was accepted into the Maritime Hall of Fame this year,” declared Michael Behrendt, chairman of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG, on the occasion of the official farewell, attended by close on 200 invited guests, including customers, partners and vendors from all over the world. After attending navigation school, Adolf Adrion started his career as a deck boy on a Hapag general cargo ship on August 14th 1957.

Keller 2009 Person of the Year

Peter I. Keller, President of NYK Line (North America) Inc., has been selected the 2009 Person of the Year by the New York/New Jersey Foreign Freight Forwarders and Brokers Association, Inc. "Peter Keller has significantly impacted the global trade community and demonstrated great leadership in the international transport industry," said Matthew Brauner, Association President. The award will be presented during the 92nd annual dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York on January 28, 2009. This event draws nearly 900 guests. The dinner will also feature a sports and entertainment memorabilia auction. Peter Keller was elected to the Governing Board of NYK in Tokyo in April of 2007.

Adrion Appointed CEO of CP Ships

The board of CP Ships Limited has appointed Adolf Adrion new CEO effective 1st January 2006 following the completion of the acquisition of CP Ships by Hapag-Lloyd at the end of 2005 The new CFO will be Ulrich Kranich, effective 1st February 2006. Mr Adrion, also executive board member of Hapag-Lloyd AG, is retaining his previous responsibilities and is taking over from former CP Ships CEO Ray Miles, who stepped down from his post on 31st December 2005. Mr Kranich, also CFO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, will also retain his previous duties. He will succeed current CFO Ian Webber who will leave his post at the end of January. Adolf Adrion joined Hapag in 1957 and assumed various management functions. He was appointed a member of the executive board of Hapag-Lloyd AG in 2004.

CP Ships’ CEO and CFO to Step Down

Following the completion of the acquisition by TUI AG of CP Ships and its de-listing on 20th December from the Toronto and New York stock exchanges, CEO Ray Miles will step down from his position on December 31. CFO Ian Webber will leave CP Ships at the end of January 2006. Miles started his shipping career in 1972 with Ocean Transport & Trading. He subsequently served as Executive Vice President of Barber Blue Sea and Managing Director of Global Equipment Management which promoted the grey-box concept of container fleet management. Council and of the Box Club, was a Director of West of England P&I Club and is a Trustee of the National Maritime Museums in Greenwich and Cornwall. 17 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, the last five as an audit partner.

Miles Named Chairman of Box Club

CP Ships Limited's CEO Ray Miles has been elected as chairman of the International Council of Containership Operators. Known informally as the Box Club, the council is the international organization of container shipping industry chief executives who meet twice a year to discuss industry issues.
