Successful Trial: BP, Maersk Tankers Use Biofuel Blend on Tankers

BP and Maersk Tankers successfully completed trials using marine fuel blended with biofuel on tankers as efforts grow to tackle the shipping sector's greenhouse gas emissions.Global shipping accounts for around 3% of global carbon emissions. The sector is considered relatively hard to decarbonize because of a lack of alternatives to marine fuel.The trials were completed on two refined oil product carriers chartered to BP from Maersk Tankers - Maersk Cirrus and Maersk Navigator, BP said in a statement.Maersk Tankers is an independent company, owned by A.P.

Ampelmann Completes Half a Million Safe Transfers for BP

Dutch offshore access solutions provider Ampelmann has reached a new milestone: 500,000 safe personnel transfers for BP globally.The  provider of offshore personnel transfer system completed its first transfer for the oil major in Trinidad & Tobago in 2010 and has since enabled another 17 projects in seven countries.“Half a million people transfers in eight years is a key milestone for Ampelmann,” said Gus DeOliveira, Area Sales Lead for the Americas. “We thank BP for their continuous trust and support in jointly making the Oil & Gas industry safer and more efficient.”“The safe delivery of these transfers is a great achievement,” said a BP Marine Representative.

Incat Crowther's Catamaran Ferry for Lomprayah

Incat Crowther delivered Thapdaorai, the seventh catamaran passenger ferry for Lomprayah High Speed Ferries. Constructed by BP Marine, the 34m vessel is an extended version of Lomprayah’s previous delivery, Maehaad. The improvements over the previous vessel reflect feedback from the operation, as well as responding to increased patronage for the operation. The vessel has been lengthened in the mid-body, which in conjunction with the addition of aft pods allow for increased deadweight, which includes increased baggage and cargo loads. The vessel’s windows have been enlarged to increase passenger outlook, whilst the boarding gates have been increased to aid passenger flow. The main deck cabin seats 233 passengers, with increased luggage storage.

BP Marine to Migrate Marine Lubricant to Castrol

Consolidation will provide marine customers with a simpler and more consistent product offering. Global lubricants manufacturer, Castrol, has announced that it will become the sole brand for the BP group’s marine lubricant offering. The decision to consolidate the marine lubricants offerings that are currently provided under both BP Marine and Castrol Marine brands will create a single product and service portfolio that will provide greater simplicity and efficiency for customers.

UAE Merchant Marine Cadets Graduate

Merchant marine cadets from a United Arab Emirates training ship graduated at a special ceremony held during Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2008, the largest maritime event of its kind in the region, which opened Sunday, 14 December 2008. The deck cadets were the sixth batch of students of the Birla Institute of Technology International Centre for Maritime Studies and Ship Management to pass out after training on the Ras Al Khaimah-berthed training ship Sindbad. Middle East Maritime Talks Emissions

Fuel, emissions and green technology is one of the crucial areas to come under discussion at one of the conferences that will take place alongside Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2008. Like other industries globally, shipping is facing increasingly tough international challenges to achieve emission reductions. Det Norske Veritas, one of Seatrade Middle East Martime's principal sponsors, believe that carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by as much as 30–50% by actions taken on existing vessels now and for new buildings prior to 2030. BP Marine to Cease Cyprus Bunker Ops

BP Marine is to close its bunkering operation in Cyprus as a result of sales failing to deliver on expectations. BP Marine first moved into the Cyprus marine fuels market in February 2005 in anticipation of increased shipping activity following the country’s entry to the EU the previous year. This, however, did not materialise and the bunkering market has in fact shrunk as economies and trade continued to be adversely affected by ongoing regional conflicts. BP Marine has collected its third accolade after the innovation of its SEA Card – Ships’ bunkers’ Easy Acquisition Card – solution was recognized by the US Government. Created as a solution to the US Defense Energy Support Center’s (DESC) search for a more efficient marine fuel procurement process, SEA Card played a significant role in the Government Fuel Card Program winning the 2007 David Packard Excellence in Acquisition Award. Improved bunkering facilities in the Caribbean region are planned as a new agreement is announced between Petrotrin and BP Marine, which will combine to provide improved fuel supply services along the key west coast ports of Trinidad. Petrotrin, the national oil Company of Trinidad and Tobago have an established marine bunkering infrastructure, supplying quality fuels from its refinery at Point-a-Pierre. BP Marine and Petrotrin will from 1st November combine their individual strengths in bunkering, customer service, marketing and marine products to creating a new alliance and a significantly higher level of service. BP Marine will now, in association with Petrotrin, market marine fuels through supply locations at all ports on the west coast of Trinidad.

Unitor ASA and BP Marine, who co-founded The Marine Alliance B.V. joint venture three years ago, have now decided to dissolve this partnership and focus individually on their respective customers’ requirements. The transition will commence early October and will be completed by 1 January 2004. After that date, Unitor and BP Marine will each provide their own customer services. EU to Develop Sulfur Strategy

The EU is limbering up to set new restrictions on sulfur in marine fuels, if MARPOL Annex VI is not implemented quickly, explains Ian Adams, secretary general of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA). At the same time, the European Commission aims to clarify its own directive on sulfur limits for marine diesel oil, which have been subject to different interpretations in different countries. Lubricant Technology Proven Tough Under Fire

When Texaco, now represented in the marine lubricants market by FAMM (Fuel and Marine Marketing), launched Taro 40 XL 40, the lubricant was designed to address pressing field problems in medium speed engines. Three years later FAMM is in a position to evaluate the performance in a large number of engines and to compare the field results with competitive lubricants. The pressing problems arose from a series of engine design and fuel processing changes. Although aimed at improving engine efficiency and making savings, the changes resulted in a series of difficulties. The best known are engine blackening, undercrown deposits, piston head corrosion, fouling of purifier heaters, increased oil consumption, base number depletion, oil scraper ring clogging and increased piston deposits.

BP Marine, Unitor Form Marine Alliance

UK-based BP Marine and Unitor ASA of Norway will form a marketing alliance to offer their combined range of products to ship operators on a global basis and, as a next step, to add new partners that will make the alliance a "one-stop-shop" for marine supplies anywhere in the world. "New members will be actively encouraged to participate, in order to bring even greater benefits to our customers," said Unitor's President, Frode Berg. Called "The Marine Alliance," the initiative will be rolled out to the 18,000 vessels currently supplied by BP Marine and Unitor during the remainder of 2000. BP Marine and Houston Marine Team Up On Bunkering Venture

BP Marine and Houston Marine Services (HMS) are joining forces to begin a new chapter in ship bunkering in the western U.S. Gulf. Effective, April 2, HMS became BP's dedicated logistics provider in an area from Brownsville, Texas to Lake Charles, La. BP Marine will serve as the marketing arm for bunker sales on behalf of the joint venture and will supply bunker fuel across a broad geographic area of the Gulf.
