Safe, fast and efficient vessel evacuation has long been a top concern of the marine industry, a fervor sure to be renewed with vigor in the wake of last month's terrorist activities in the U.S. and heightened securities being formulated for all transportation industries. New research being carried out by British Maritime Technology (BMT) and the University of Greenwich could give ship designers and owners vital new information on how humans react when evacuating from ships. The hope is that this unique study will help to prevent future shipping disasters, helping to save thousands of lives. BMT Defence Services Ltd, a subsidiary of British Maritime Technology Ltd (BMT), the multi-disciplinary engineering and technology consultancy, has today acquired Bertram Martin Consulting Ltd (BMC), the engineering investment appraisal and cost modelling consultancy. BMC is well known throughout the defence industry for its work in forecasting the through-life costs of major design and procurement projects and appraising potential research and development investments. It has also applied this expertise to the offshore industry. BMC will become a business unit of BMT Defence Services, the naval engineering and design services subsidiary, reporting to Managing Director Andrew Tyler.

AVEVA Group, has announced the proposed acquisition of Tribon Solutions AB. Since 1967, AVEVA, formerly known as Cadcentre, has been providing IT solutions and services to the process, power and offshore industries. A recent survey of all CAD designed facilities in the North Sea shows a large proportion of all Crude Oil production in that region is processed by facilities designed with AVEVA Solutions. Similar figures relate to the global power, petrochemical and pulp and paper industries. Marine design, specifically that of hulls and other floating structures, poses specific challenges and practices not seen in plant design or ship outfitting -- sectors in which AVEVA already has established strength.

Security at Kenya’s ports is being upgraded at a cost of more than $11m. The World Bank-funded project includes the installation of an integrated security solution, involving an electronic access control system at all entrances. It will also see the fixing of an automatic perimeter intrusion detection system and a remote surveillance monitoring system or (CCTV). The recent inauguration of the Mombasa Port Search and Rescue Center was part of the project, according to AllAfrica.com. The center would be used to monitor the Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles coastlines and would be linked to two others in South and West Africa. The port is also in the process of implementing the International Safety Management (ISM) code.
