Baker, Dickson Take On Leading Roles Within British Tugowners Association

Two of Svitzer’s senior UK-based executives will take up leading roles to support the voice of the British towage sector, the company  announced. Scott Baker, Svitzer’s Head of Marine Standards, becomes Chairman of the British Tugowners Association (BTA), taking over from outgoing Chair Nick Dorman. Meanwhile, Ita Dickson, Cluster Managing Director of UK North, joins the BTA’s Executive Committee.

UK Addresses Dangers of Weighted Heaving Lines

Emergency Tug Assistance Available Within U.K. Waters

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the British Tugowners' Association (BTA) have this week concluded a revised agreement for instant, no-fuss, tug assistance to be available within U.K. waters. CAST (Coastguard Agreement for Salvage and Towage) means that, subject to availability, one or more tugs can be instantly mobilised by the MCA when a vessel is in difficulty and poses a threat to life, the environment or property. The agreement complements the government funded Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) which are large anchor handling type vessels that provide year-round cover in the Dover Strait, South West Approaches, the Minches and the Fair Isle area. The first CAST agreement was drafted in 1997 following the recommendations on the Donaldson report.

Witte Elected VP of ISU

International Salvage Union members meeting in Seattle during late September for the ISU’s 51st General Meeting elected Arnold Witte, CEO of US salvor Donjon Marine, as Vice-President. Arnold Witte succeeds Titan CEO David Parrot as ISU Vice-President. David Parrot remains a member of the ISU Executive Committee. Arnold Witte, who established Donjon Marine in the 1960s, is a Past President of the ISU (1995 – 98). He has been a member of the ISU’s Executive Committee since 1992. Arnold Witte played a major role in the negotiations which led to the adoption of the SCOPIC salvage remuneration system in 1999. Arnold Witte has also served as Immediate Past President of the American Salvage Association. In addition, the AGM confirmed the appointment of Michael Lacey as ISU Secretary-General.
