Ship Repair: Inside the $60m Refit of RV Roger Revelle

This month MR dives inside the $60 million refit of RV Roger Revelle, a project which leverages a treasure trove of ‘lessons learned’ from recent refits in the academic research vessel fleet and highlights the value of slimming the vendor list.Research vessel (R/V) Roger Revelle is back at work after a midlife refit involving upgrades from top to bottom, bow to stern. The ship is owned by the Office of Naval Research and has been operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego since 1996. It is one of the largest ships in the U.S.

APL Halves Fleet Carbon Emissions

APL announced a 47.4% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per container transported per km in 2018, compared to 2009.The result follows the Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA) of APL’s 2018 carbon dioxide emission data by the global non-profit organization Business for Social Responsibility’s (BSR’s) Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG). The Clean Cargo EPA data was verified by Lloyd’s Register Group according to the Clean Cargo verification protocol and principles of ISO14064-3:2006 standard.Looking forward to the 2020 Global Sulfur Cap

KR Responds to RMI Report on Stellar Daisy Casualty

Korean Register (KR), its Chairman, management and entire staff offers sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the seafarers who tragically lost their lives due to the sinking of Stellar Daisy. KR reaffirms its commitment to investigating the causes of the sinking, sharing its knowledge and implementing any changes necessary to avoid a similar loss in the future. The factsStellar Daisy was a 266,141 dwt Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) owned by Polaris Shipping and flagged with the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). On 31 March 2017 whilst en route from Ilha Guaiba, Brazil to Qingdao and laden with iron ore fines, the ship sank in the South Atlantic Ocean around 1700 nautical miles from Uruguay and 1800 nautical miles from South Africa.

OOCL Expands GHG Reporting and Verification Scope

Tallinn Port Annouces Discounts for LNG Ships

Starting in 2018, all ships that use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as their primary fuel can apply for a discount of four percent on tonnage fees when calling at harbours of the Port of Tallinn. The goal of the discount is to contribute to the adoption of environmentally friendlier technologies in the Baltic Sea shipping sector. “Similarly to other ports in the European Union and Norway, the Port of Tallinn has set a course toward environmentally differentiated port fees, with the aim of reducing the amount of air pollution and marine pollution from ships’ waste handling and gaseous emissions,” said the head of quality and environmental management department at the Port of Tallinn, Ellen Kaasik.

Container Shipping Industry Calls for Climate Action

Members of BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) have agreed on a climate action statement and call to action for the container shipping sector and its value chain to support private-sector contributions for the global goals on climate change. Today, CCWG includes ocean container shipping lines representing about 85 percent of global volume and more than a dozen key cargo owners. The CCWG member statement reflects an aspiration for container shipping to play its role in limiting global temperature increase to well below 2˚C, acknowledges its part as a low-carbon freight solution and partner in emissions reductions, and calls on other global freight transport stakeholders for ambitious action on emissions reductions.

APL announced that it has reduced its fleet carbon dioxide emissions by 45.5 percent in 2015, compared to its emissions level in 2009. “APL has steadily reduced its year-on-year carbon emissions and this demonstrates the company’s unyielding focus on sustainable shipping,” said Kenneth Glenn, APL President. APL attributed its carbon emissions reduction to improvements in operational efficiency, fleet and voyage optimization, technical improvements, as well as a more fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly fleet of vessels.

Largest UASC Ship Calls at Khorfakkan Terminal

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), a leading container shipping line and emerging global carrier, and Gulftainer, the world’s largest privately-owned, independent port operator based in the UAE, marked the maiden call of UASC’s 15,000 TEU M.V. Linah into Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT), at an event today. The M.V. UASC Wins Seatrade Award

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC)  has received the ‘Environmental Responsibility’ award and ‘The Shipping Company of the Year’ award at this year’s Seatrade Maritime Awards for Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa. Shipping Lines Cut CO2 Emissions

The container carriers have managed to reduce their combined CO2 emissions by around one third since 2009, according to a new report. Average CO2 emissions per container per kilometer for global ocean transportation routes have declined by 8.4 percent from 2013 to 2014 and by more than 29 percent since 2009, according to BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) annual report for 2015. The report attributed a portion of these results to the changes in carrier representation or global trade conditions. In addition, the continued performance improvement was also attributed to carrier fleet efficiency and data quality, both of which have direct benefits for shipping customers. CCWG is comprised of 45 members representing 80 percent of ocean container cargo carriers and many customers.

The Container Ship Safety Forum (CSSF) has been launched as a global business-to-business network that aims to improve safety performance and management practices in the container shipping industry. Founding members CMA CGM Group, Costamare Shipping Company S.A., E.R. Schiffahrt GmbH & Cie. LR Verifies OOCL’s CO2 and SOx Emissions Data

OOCL’s emissions data reported into the BSR Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) verified as true and accurate by Lloyd's Register, supporting the operator’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions from their vessels. Clean Shipping Groups Mull Potential Merger

BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) and the Clean Shipping Index (CSI)— two environmental reporting initiatives for ships and ship operators—signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate for cleaner, more efficient shipping. Through this agreement, the groups will explore a merger to create one global initiative that provides a uniform set of environmental reporting and assessment tools for cargo owners to use during procurement of shipping services. In the short term, CCWG and CSI will align more of the environmental parameters each organization currently uses. In the past few years, there has been a proliferation of market-oriented environmental initiatives for the maritime industry.

FEA Aids Deepwater Horizon Failure Forensics

On the evening of April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon suffered a blowout while drilling in the Macondo Prospect, an area in the Gulf of Mexico 40 miles off the southeast coast of Louisiana. The platform caught fire; two days later, it sank. Numerous attempts were made to seal the well, but oil continued to spew into the Gulf until July 15, when a temporary cap was put in place. Relief wells then pumped concrete into the area underneath the wellhead, and the well was deemed permanently sealed in mid-September.

Bollinger Returns after Gustav

Bollinger Shipyards returns 95 percent of its 14 locations back to work following Hurricane Gustav's plowing through the heart of the based shipyard community. According to Bollinger’s website, all but two locations are back up and running, with several locations on generators with supervisory staff only. The corporate office, located in , is on generators and is coordinating the efforts of the 3000 member workforce. Bollinger is working with the local and state authorities to insure the safe return of their employees and shipyard services to the Oil and Gas community, said Robert Socha, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing.
