ABG Ties Up with GTT for LNG Technology

ABG Shipyard Ltd has tied up with Gaztransport and Technigaz (GTT) of France for the maritime transportation and storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), reports Livemint. With this pact, ABG has become the third Indian company to secure technology collaboration to build LNG carriers. The Shipyard is preparing for a tender set to be issued by GAIL (India) Ltd for hiring nine new LNG ships that will haul gas from the US from December 2017. “We have signed an agreement with GTT for technology transfer for building LNG ships,” a spokesman for ABG Shipyard said.

India's GAIL Postpones LNG Tender; No Takers

The state-owned gas utility GAIL (India) has postponed the tender date for its $7.6 billion newly built LNG ships for the third time as it did find any takers. The company first postponed the last date of bidding from October 30 to December 4 and then to January 6. Today it put it off till February 17, according to a notice issued by GAIL. This is because the PSU firm is not able to get responses from international shipbuilders, given the condition that they should lend their technology to Indian firms.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Junichiro Ikeda) announced the delivery of the LNG carrier KUMUL at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. (Hudong) in Shanghai on April 29. A naming ceremony was held at the shipyard on April 8. The KUMUL, which was ordered by MOL subsidiary Gemini LNG Shipping Limited (Gemini), is the last in a series of four new-building LNG carriers ordered by MOL to provide LNG transportation for projects in Papua New Guinea. Golar LNG Restructuring & Equity Offering

Golar LNG Limited announced a major restructuring combined with an intent to conduct an equity offering in its newly formed subsidiary, Golar LNG Energy Limited. Consistent with the announcement made in Golar's first quarter report, Golar has incorporated Energy in Bermuda for the purpose of transferring such part of its asset portfolio which is not employed on long term charters to this entity. •    A 13.6% ownership interest in the Australian listed company LNG Ltd. South Korea to Build World's Largest LNG-Fueled Ship

In an effort to go green amid looming strict emission rules, South Korea will launch a pilot program to build the world's largest vessel powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), reports Yonhap. South Korean Ministry of  Oceans and Fisheries  said it will join forces with local shipyards, builders and state institutes to develop a class of 180,000-ton LNG-propelled vessels. Aqualis Offshore Lands Study Job for LNG Barge

Offshore marine and engineering consultancy Aqualis Offshore, part of Oslo-listed Aqualis ASA, has been contracted by Gas Entec Co. Ltd to provide an engineering study of a new-build LNG barge that will operate offshore the U.S. The contract value is undisclosed. Aqualis Offshore’s work scope is to provide a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) study for Control and Alarm Monitoring System (CAMS), Emergency Shutdown System (ESDS), and Wireless Telemetry System installed on the 2,200 cubic meter LNG bunkering/transport barge. The LNG bunkering/transport barge will carry LNG cargo from the port facilities towards LFS (LNG Fuelled Ship) for bunkering. The LNG bunkering barge is built by Conrad Shipyard, Texas, for TOTE.

Eidesvik Awarded Contract Extensions

Norwegian based offshore shipping company Eidesvik Offshore announced it has been awarded contract extensions for the supply vessels Viking Lady and Viking Athene from Total E&P on the Solaris well. The contract is in direct continuation with the current contract.   Estimated duration is 45 days for the 2006-built Viking Athene and 150 days for the 2009-built LNG-powered Viking Lady, Eidesvik said.

Petronas, HHI Novation Agreement with MISC

Malaysia’s MISC Bhd and parent Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) have agreed to build new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers worth US$1.1 billion and charter them to another unit owned by the national oil and gas company for up to 20 years. MISC will also extend its charters of five refurbished LNG carriers to Petronas by another 10 years. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, MISC said it has signed an agreement for the novation of shipbuilding contracts with Petronas and shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Co Ltd.

Cochin Shipyard in Pact with Samsung Heavy Industries

India's state-owned Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean firm Samsung Heavy Industries for technology partnership in constructing liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrying vessels, reports local media. “Cochin Shipyard has signed an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to collaborate on building LNG ships,” a shipping ministry official said. The MoU, which was inked after protracted negotiations will enable the city-based public sector yard to respond to a tender for LNG carrier construction soon-to-be-re-issued by GAIL (India).

Hyundai Heavy to Build First Korean-Designed LNG Ship

A Korean shipbuilder has succeeded in independently designing a liquefied natural gas carrier. Building LNG ships is a high value-added business, as it requires the highest level of shipbuilding technology. The latest achievement should significantly lower the royalties that Korean companies have had to pay to countries that developed such technology. Hyundai Heavy Industries said that plans to purchase an LNG ship built with Korean design technology in May. Although dominates global LNG carrier orders, it has been dependent on foreign companies that own the core technology needed to design the ships. Korean shipbuilders have paid Gaz Transport & Technigaz (GTT) of more than W1 trillion (US$1=W1,000) in royalties over the last five years for the technology.

BMT Awarded LNG Engineering For Côte d’Ivoire

BMT Asia Pacific (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has been appointed Owners Engineer and lead design consultant by Endeavor Energy, for the development of the LNG storage and regasification facility as part of the Songon Gas-to-Power Project in Côte d’Ivoire. Songon, a greenfield development, will consist of combined cycle gas to power generation with an integrated fuel solution, featuring purpose-built LNG infrastructure and a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU).

Chinese Yards to Build More LNG Tankers

Chinese shipbuilders are gearing up to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers as the government approves more projects to import the fuel. China's first home-built LNG tanker will be completed in November by Shanghai's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co, which has orders for three more at about $200 million apiece. Another three Chinese shipmakers are ready to build the tankers, the most complex and expensive type of cargo carrier. Next month, China will receive its first cargo of LNG in Guangdong from Australia amid plans to double gas use by 2010 to curb coal pollution. The country is developing its domestic shipbuilding industry to secure transportation of imported raw materials for the expanding economy.

Amarcon and GTT Signs Cooperation Agreement

Amarcon and GTT will develop technology that enhances the quality of sloshing measurement and prediction for LNG carriers. Amarcon, a member of the ABB group, announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement with GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) to market and further develop a forecasting and advice software system for sloshing prevention onboard LNG carriers. The agreement was signed at the LNG17 Conference & Exhibition in Houston, U.S. In the coming years, a significant growth in the long distance transport of LNG is expected. Consequently, a considerable number of new build LNG carriers will come into the market. It is clear that the safe operation of these vessels will be imperative.

Total Seeking to Buy Stake in Iranian LNG Project

French oil giant Total held talks with Iranian officials about several projects in the country in 2016, notably a 10 million tonnes per year liquefied natural gas project (LNG), Reuters reported. It has signed an agreement with Iranian authorities for a 50 per cent stake  in Iran’s South Pars gas field project which will developed at an investment of $4 billion. Sources told Reuters in February that Total was in talks to buy a multi-billion dollar stake in Iran's partly-built LNG export facility.

New Global Brand for LNG Bunkering: Gas4Sea

ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK Line have launched Gas4Sea, a new brand for their joint marketing of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel around the world. Gas4Sea aims to lead innovation through the ship-to-ship supply of LNG for the maritime sector. In 2014, ENGIE, Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK concluded a framework agreement for a partnership to develop LNG bunkering services. By combining NYK’s shipping expertise with ENGIE and Mitsubishi Corporation’s LNG supply portfolio and terminal access under the brand Gas4Sea, the partners will offer a cleaner, reliable, safe and cost-effective service to shipping customers worldwide. Through their experience in their respective businesses, they will be able to tailor their LNG supply chains to the customers’ needs.

New Joint Venture to Build LNG Ships

Itochu Corp. and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. have reached an agreement with Sonatrach, an Algerian state-owned oil and gas company, to build and operate ships to transport liquefied natural gas, wire reports said. The three and a marine transport unit of Sonatrach will set up a company to build two 75,500-cu. m. LNG carriers under a 35 billion yen investment project. Japan's Universal Shipbuilding Co. will build the two carriers in 2007 and 2009, the report said, adding the carriers will be lent to Sonatrach for LNG shipping to Greece, Italy, Spain and other countries on the Mediterranean coast. Demand for LNG is growing because of rising oil prices and the fight against global warming, the report said. Algeria is one of the world's largest LNG exporters.

High Royalties to Cut Into Shipbuilding Profits

South Korean shipbuilders are paying large royalties on a core foreign technology for manufacturing liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, causing a big reduction in their earnings, The Korea Times reports. To build LNG carriers, most South Korean and foreign shipbuilders currently use a membrane containment system developed by Gaz Transport & Technigaz of France, a key technology for freezing and storing gas in tanks for transport. South Korean shipbuilders' profit margin amounts to about 10 percent of a carrier's order price, of which nearly 5 percent is paid to the French company in royalties, according to the report. The nation's shipbuilders charge an average $200 million for each LNG carrier.

FLNG Hilli Episeyo Departs Singapore Early

 Golar LNG Limited said today that its floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel Hilli Episeyo departed Singapore for Cameroon earlier than anticipated, leaving at 10 a.m. local time on October 12.   Hilli Episeyo was scheduled to leave Singapore between October 15 and October 20, but Golar LNG said a decision was made to complete LNG bunkering in Cameroon rather than in Singapore. The voyage to Cameroon is expected to take between 32 and 40 days.    The world’s first FLNG conversion, Hilli Episeyo was converted from a 1970s-built LNG carrier by Keppel Shipyard. The vessel will go to work offshore Kribi, Cameroon for Société Nationale des Hydrocarbures and Perenco Cameroon.  

Liquid Natural Gas Carrier Ordered by Oman Shipping Co

The Oman Shipping Company (OSC) has  signed an order for a new build LNG carrier with Hyundai Heavy based in Ulsan, South Korea. The LNG carrier, for delivery in 2014, will have a 162,000 cubic metres capacity, and is to be fitted out with dual fuel engines. The new ship will comply with European ‘Green Certificate’ requirements, and will have accommodation as a training vessel for up to six trainees and an instructor at any one time. OSC already owns and operates a fleet of five LNG carriers, which are all technically managed in-house by Oman Ship Management Company. Oman Shipping Company is a closed joint stock company, incorporated in 2003 and owned by the Government of Oman through the Ministry of Finance (80 per cent) and Oman Oil (20 per cent).

Spanish liquefied natural gas (LNG) operator Gas Natural Fenosa signed an exclusive 10-year LNG supply deal with Spanish ferry operator Baleària. According to the company release, the supply contract will initially apply to the ports of Barcelona, Valencia and Algeciras, then extended to all the peninsular ports operated by the shipping company together with the entire new fleet powered by this fuel committed to using LNG as an ecological fuel. China Building LNG Networks

According to recent AFX News reports, China has started building two LNG networks along its southern coastline. China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) currently has two LNG projects under construction in the provinces Guangdong and Fujian, with an annual planned capacity of 7 million tons and 2.6 million tons, respectively. The Guangdong project is expected to be completed next year with the Fujian network to become operational in 2007, according to the report. CNOOC plans to build two 6 million ton LNG plants in the Zhejing province and in Shanghai, both scheduled to be operational in 2008. Source: AFX News

The Expert Committee today announced the Short List for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award which will be presented on June 3 in Oslo, Norway, at the Nor-Shipping. The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF) is nominated for its world leading role in maritime environmental knowledge management and knowledge sharing. OptiMarin AS is nominated for their pioneering development of cost efficient ballast water treatment plants for shipboard installation. Norwegian shipowner company Eidesvik AS has developed the first offshore supply vessel to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). By introducing LNG as an alternative to marine diesel, the result will be an 85 percent reduction in the outlet of NOx, 20 percent CO2 and 100 percent SOx.
