Operating on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from day one in service, the MV George III, the first of Pasha Group’s two new ‘Ohana Class’, Jones Act-qualified containerships, features a state-of-the-art engine, an optimized hull form, and an underwater propulsion system with a high-efficiency rudder and propeller. George III is the first LNG-powered vessel to fuel on the West Coast and the first to serve Hawaii. The 774-ft. Jones Act vessel surpasses the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2030 emission standards for ocean vessels.

InTank has opened its second test facility for factory testing. The testing simulates InVoyage BWT with InTank and InTank FITT. As of June 2022, both test sites have been updated with new robust PLC programming. Both test sites are equipped with audio-video capabilities, so that customers can witness the facilities in video streaming or video recordings. On request, both sites can host owner representative(s), IL, Class, or other witnesses for their InTank or InTank FITT FATs.

Jones Act tanker and ATB operator Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) selected oneTank, a Seattle-based ballast water treatment system manufacturer, to provide an aftpeak ballast water treatment solution for vessels in their fleet.oneTank gained IMO BWMS Code approval in July 2020 and U.S. Coast Guard Type Approval in September 2020. Engineered as a low-cost ($65,000 per system) treatment option intended for vessels that do not need a complex solution, it is light and compact; the system has a footprint of just four square feet and requires only 15 amps of electrical power.

Norwegian based ballast water treatment system (BWTS) manufacturer Optimarin announced an agreement with U.S.-based Lee Engineering Supply Company to warehouse critical spare parts and plans to expand its global service network.According to Optimarin CEO, Leiv Kallestad, the agreement represents a step in the company’s efforts to provide after-sale service to owners operating in the Gulf of Mexico. “By warehousing critical spare parts at Lee Engineering’s facilities in Louisiana, we can make sure our customers have rapid access to both spare parts and service, if required,” he says.

Norwegian-based ballast water treatment (BWT) systems manufacturer Optimarin informs it has completed testing of its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) in accordance with the revised IMO G8 guidelines, while also upgrading its existing U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approval certificates to ensure compliance for zero to two hours holding time.The testing procedures were conducted at the NIVA test facility in Norway from September 2019 to the end of June 2020, with DNV GL operating as the designated Independent Laboratory. Tests were conducted with two different filters simultaneously.

Installing ballast water treatment systems to comply with new regulations will require owners to automate ballast operations on board their vessels or barges. Retrofitting ballast water treatment systems generally requires modifications to the existing ballast systems. Many older vessels have remote operated valves, but no automation of the ballast system. Dutch shipbuilding and engineering conglomerate Damen Group said that it has developed standard Ballast Water Treatment Ex certified deckhouses that can withstand slamming of waves.The deckhouses can be placed on the open deck of a tanker vessel, it said in a press release.Since a container construction is not designed to withstand the forces of wave slamming on the open deck of a tanker vessel. Damen has developed a deckhouse with an eight millimeter wall thickness that is able to withstand wave slamming forces. United Kingdom-based maritime company  Silverstream Technologies has entered into a framework agreement with  European ship design consultancy International Contract Engineering (ICE) group for worldwide installation design services for retrofitting of the Silverstream System.Silverstream System is a patented air lubrication system designed for reduction of friction between ships’ hulls and seawater. Swedish technology major Alfa Laval has signed an agreement worth SEK 210 million (USD 22.25 million), for the supply of Alfa Laval PureBallast systems to an alliance of Turkish shipowners.The orders will be booked in the Marine Separation & Heat Transfer Equipment unit of the Marine Division in the third quarter, while deliveries will be spread over a five-year period, from 2019 to 2024. Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) have gained approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) slashing their required holding time from 72 to just 24 hours for all salinities. The certification ensures the systems are optimized for short sea shipping routes in the US, as the time between ballast water treatment (BWT) and de-ballasting is cut dramatically.USCG requires a holding time post treatment for environmentally friendly UV systems. This is to ensure all cells are inactive before testing.

Goltens’ Worldwide Green Technologies Division Asia announced contracts with NYK Bulk & Projects Carrier Ltd. (NBP) and BW LPG for support in retrofitting a total of 37 vessels with ballast water treatment systems (BWT).The NBP order is for 25 bulk carriers. NBP is a subsidiary of NYK. An Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) installed on Seven Pacific, a Subsea7 vessel, in 2015 has been upgraded to meet the ballast water treatment system (BWTS) requirements of the United States Coast Guard (USCG).The Norway-based BWTS provider said in a press release that it originally installed its UV-based technology onboard the advanced offshore construction and pipe-laying vessel in 2015.
