Horizon to Build USACE Towboat

M/V George Grugett, delivered to the U.S. Army Corps in August, 2013

Horizon shipbuilding, Inc. announced that it has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Little Rock District, to build the M/V Shorty Baird Replacement, a 95' Z-drive towboat. This is the latest of three recent USACE contracts, having delivered the M/V George Grugett, a 114' towboat, in August of this year and the M/V General Irwin, a 58' towboat, in April 2012. Horizon owns and operates two shipyard facilities in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, located on a 100' wide channel with an 18' dredged depth.

The motor vessel George C. Grugett was delivered August 9, 2013 by Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Memphis, Tenn. This is the second vessel in two years that Horizon has built for the Army Corps. The USACE designated that Hull 776 be named George C. Grugett. The namesake of the vessel was the former Executive Assistant, Memphis District US Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Grugett was a bomber pilot in World War II from 1943-1945 and then spent 35 years working for the Corps of Engineers. After retiring from the Corps, Mr.

NWC Calls For Common Sense in WRDA Hearing

The National Waterways Conference has called for “common sense and balance” regarding the latest report issued by the National Wildlife Federation and Taxpayers for Common Sense.
