The two freight ferries serving the Northern Isles have been bought by the Scottish government. Caledonian Maritime Assets Buys Three Ferries
A deal has been agreed for the three passenger ferries serving the Northern Isles to be purchased outright by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) with loan funding from the Scottish Government. The MV Hamnavoe, MV Hrossey and MV Hjaltland, which have previously been leased from Royal Bank of Scotland, will be taken into CMAL ownership. An 18 month extension to the current Northern Isles Ferry Services contract has also been agreed to allow further progress to be made with the ongoing review of procurement policy.

Kongsberg Wins EPCI Contract for New Ferry Builds
Kongsberg Maritime informs it has been awarded engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contracts worth more than NOK 160 million with the Glasgow based shipbuilder and marine fabricator Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited (FMEL) for two new 100-meter ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL). The ferries will be dual-fuel vessels so they can operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and marine diesel, and are designed to carry 127 cars or 16 HGVs, or a combination of both and up to 1,000 passengers. Kongsberg Maritime, together with its wholly owned subsidiary Kongsberg Maritime Engineering (KME), will execute the project; KME will provide all engineering, procurement and project management while Kongsberg Maritime will supply a ‘Full Picture’ system delivery.
Wärtsilä Propulsion for First UK Dual-fuel Ships
he first ever UK domestic dual-fuelled new build vessels will feature fully integrated Wärtsilä propulsion machinery packages. Wärtsilä will also supply extended engineering and site support services. The two ships, both 102 metre long ro-ro passenger ferries, are being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) based in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The contracts with Wärtsilä were recorded in December 2015. Besides being the first dual-fuel vessels for CMAL, they are also the first ever dual-fuel ships to be built in the UK. These will be built by Ferguson Marine Engineering Ltd.
Ferguson Signs $150mln LNG Ferries for CMAL
Scotland-based Ferguson Marine Engineering (FMEL) has signed a deal to build two 100-meter, dual-fuel ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) in a contract worth £97 million (USD 150 million) that will boost shipbuilding on the River Clyde and secure 150 shipyard jobs. Back in August, the government of Scotland named the rejuvenated Scottish yard as the preferred tenderer for the contract to build the two ferries for the state-backed ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac).
Electric & Hybrid Propulsion Ordered fir CMAL Ferry
Imtech Marine informs it has been awarded a third contract to supply the electric and hybrid propulsion system for a hybrid ferry operated by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) of Scotland. Ferguson Marine, the Glasgow-based yard which built the first two CMAL diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries, launched a tender last year and Imtech Marine was given the contract in late February. For the third hybrid ferry, Imtech Marine will, next to the diesel-electric and Li-Ion battery hybrid propulsion system, additionally carry out the electrical installation.
Voith Schneider Propellers for Third CMAL Hybrid Ferry
Scottish-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has chosen Voith propulsion systems for its new hybrid ferry. Like its sister vessels, MV Hallaig and MV Lochinvar, the new hybrid ferry will be built by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow. CMAL relies on two VSP 16R5 EC/90-1 as well as two bow-tooth couplings and the Voith electronic control system. 38% Fuel Savings for Hybrid Ferry
When Imtech Marine was asked to supply a hybrid propulsion system to the first ever diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries to the Scottish state-owned ferry operator, Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. (CMAL) in 2011, fuel savings of around 20% were expected, the company said. Following extensive trials Imtech Marine announced that the actual fuel savings with the innovative hybrid system - consisting of diesel electric in combination with battery technology - were up to 38%. CMAL operates 30 ferries on the west coast of Scotland to 18 islands.

Second Hybrid Ferry Launched on the Clyde
A cutting edge ferry, which is the second of two hybrid vessels, was launched on the Clyde today at Ferguson's shipyard in Port Glasgow. The ferries are being built following a Scottish Government investment worth over £20 million, which has continued the proud heritage and tradition of shipbuilding on the Clyde. The hybrid ferry MV Lochinvar is one of only two passenger and vehicle roll-on, roll-off ferries in the world to incorporate a low-carbon hybrid system of diesel electric and lithium ion battery power. Deltamarin, New Ferry Design Contracts
Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd and Société des Traversiers du Québec have both ordered new passenger ferry designs from Deltamarin. Both companies named sustainable design and excellent energy efficiency as important criteria in the designs. The order of the Scottish Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) comprises the concept design of two small RoPax ferries (311.6 ft & 114.8 ft). The designs will be used as tendering specifications to shipyards. CMAL are intending to commence a fleet replacement program in the near future, and these ferries will be a part of it. Canna Ferry Gets Green Passport
The passenger and vehicle ferry Canna has become the first ship in Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd's fleet to be issued with a Lloyd’s Register Green Passport. This follows a training workshop for CMAL staff and a comprehensive audit process managed by Lloyd’s Register. The Green Passport - officially termed an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) - will accompany the ship throughout its operational life and will be reviewed by a member of the Lloyd's Register Group on an annual basis.
