Conservation Groups Challenge Navy's Sonar Plans

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has approved the Navy’s 5-year plan to expand its sonar & live-fire training exercises in the Pacific ocean, but environmentalists are challenging the decision because of the threat it poses to marine life, reports Care2 in the following (excerpted) report. L.A. Port Approves Master Plan Updates

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a new Port Master Plan that is the first comprehensive update of the Port’s development policies and procedures since its original plan took effect more than three decades ago. The new plan incorporates previous amendments and anticipated future changes to the use of property within the coastal zone managed by the port. The document promotes orderly development consistent with the port’s long-term goals of making the best use of its land and water resources…

Rear Adm. Kevin R. The Navy is renewing authorizations that will enable us to continue to train and test live sonar and explosives at sea for another five years (2019). The process of renewing authorizations involves analyzing the possible effects of training and testing and making that data publicly available in the form of the Hawaii-Southern California Training and Testing environmental impact statement (HSTT EIS) and the Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing environmental impact statement (AFTT EIS). Some of the information in those EISs has been misrepresented and exaggerated.

US Port's Master Plan Ready for Public Comment

The Port of Los Angeles has released a Draft Port Master Plan for public review and input through April 8, 2013. The Port Master Plan serves as a long-range plan to establish policies and guidelines for future development within the coastal zone boundary of the Port of Los Angeles. The Draft Port Master Plan combines the original 1980 Port Master Plan and its subsequent amendments into an updated and more concise document that reflects recent land use planning and projects, replaces outdated language, and provides an easy to understand, specific land use plan.

Port of Los angeles Executive Director Receivs Peter Benchley ‘Excellence in Solutions' Ocean Conservation Award. Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D., has been named the 2012 recipient of the Blue Frontier Campaign’s Peter Benchley Ocean Award for  “Excellence in Solutions.” The Blue Frontier Campaign is a national marine conservation activist organization working to improve ocean policies in coastal states. The Peter Benchley Award is named in honor of lifetime marine wildlife conservationist Peter Benchley, best known for writing the bestseller novel ‘Jaws’ in 1974.

USCG Suspends Approval Process for New LNG Project

With eyes on more than 400 environmental and safety concerns, the U.S. Coast Guard officially stopped the clock last week on the approval process for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project planned for the southern stretches of the Santa Barbara Channel. A proposal from Texas-based NorthernStar Energy to convert the Platform Grace oil rig — some 10 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara and directly adjacent to the boundaries of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary — into an LNG facility had been on a fast-tracked review process that could have seen the Clearwater Port project approved as soon as next June — until now, that is. In a letter sent directly to NorthernStar on October 30, the Coast Guard, in conjunction with the U.S.

California Sues For Say In Fate Of Drilling Leases

California's governor, attorney general and the California Coastal Commission filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Interior Department to allow the state a say in the fate of oil drilling leases off the state's coast. California Coastal Commission Chair Sara Wan said the state was denied its mandatory right to review the leases for environmental issues. "It doesn't mean we would necessarily seek a ban on offshore drilling," Wan said. "The commission is saying (the leases) could have serious impacts on coastal resources and the state needs the right to look at the leases. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Oakland, Calif., the state attorney general's office said.
