Seaway Stakeholders File Suit Against US Coast Guard

A coalition of U.S. Great Lakes ports, vessel operating companies and maritime trade associations today filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia challenging the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2016 increase in Great Lakes pilotage rates, the American Great Lakes Ports Association (AGLPA) announced. Tundra Aground in St. Lawrence Seaway

The 185 meter long drybulk vessel MV Tundra (30,892dwt, built 2009) owned by Canfornav, part of the Canadian Forest Navigation Group, has run aground overnight on the St. Lawrence Seaway at Lancaster, Ontario in Canada. The Tundra had veered a short distance out of the shipping channel and ran hard aground on a shoal. No reports of injuries. Canfornav has a fleet of over 40 vessels dedicated to servicing the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes. A  Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada spokesman said the Tundra has been investigated before, following another grounding incident in 2012. The TSB says it is deploying a team to investigate the grounding. The incident occurred just a few hours after the cruise ship Saint Laurent was refloated in a lock a short distance away in Massena.

RWO Reports a Healthy Interest in CleanBallast System

After RWO’s CleanBallast system was considered as the first choice by Canadian shipowner Seaspan, the Bremen-based marine water treatment expert is proud to announce further contracts for its ballast water treatment system for Belgian and Canadian shipowners. Canada’s Canfornav will install the RWO system on four 36,000dwt bulk carriers at Yangfan shipyard, and another four CleanBallast units are destined for 38,000t LPG carriers built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyards for Belgium’s Exmar. “The IMO Convention for ballast water treatment will be an important issue on every shipowner’s desk this year.

ShipDecision Comprehensive Emissions Performance Reporting Module

ShipDecision Comprehensive Emissions Performance Reporting Module Developed in Conjunction with Canfornav Inc. Speaking today at the Green Tech conference organized by Green Marine, representatives from Canfornav Inc. and Stelvio Inc. described a new Maritime emissions reporting technology. Shipowner and Operator Canfornav sought to automate the collection of emissions performance data that the company reports annually, in compliance with the Emissions Reporting guidelines established by Green Marine.

ShipDecision Chartering Software

In an initiative conceived jointly with Canadian ship owner Canfornav, Stelvio Inc. has added a new set of features to the Chartering Module of its ShipDecision maritime software suite. The Module gives Charterers one consolidated view of all information related to a Contract of Affreightment including: all documents and emails pertaining to the COA; cargo type and volume; allotment across a specific number of voyages; and a complete trail of all actions taken to move the cargo. ShipDecision is a Maritime Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that helps organize the sharing and use of information among business partners in the Maritime sector.

CMC Joins Legal Action, NY Ballast Regs

The Chamber of Marine Commerce, along with a number of other industry stakeholders, are joining forces to take legal action against the state of New York's proposed new ballast water regulations. The other parties joining in the lawsuit include American Great Lakes Ports Association, Canadian Shipowners Association, Federal Marine Terminals, Canfornav, Polska Zegluga Morska, Port of Oswego and Port of Albany Commission. During the past few months, four Great Lakes states (New York, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio) have issued new ballast water regulations, joining Michigan and Minnesota, both of whom already had ballast water regulations.
