The new Ship Security and Alert Systems (SSAS) regulations were adopted by International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance maritime security in response to the increasing threat from terrorism and piracy. After July 1, 2004, most deep-sea passenger and cargo ships must be fitted with a device that can send an alert message containing the ship's ID and position whenever the ship is under threat or has been compromised. The distress message must be activated covertly from a switch on the navigation bridge or other shipboard location, and transmitted only to the designated authority without being received on other ships or raising an alarm on the ship under attack.

Thrane & Thrane said that the company’s mini-C solution for Ship Security Alert System (SSAS), the TT-3000SSA Capsat® Ship Security Alert, has received five new type approvals by the following classification societies: American Bureau of Shipping (ABS); Chinese Classification Society (CCS); Germanischer Lloyds (GL); Government of India Ministry of Shipping; and Polski Rejestr Statkow (PRS). Thrane & Thrane has earlier received type approvals by Lloyd’s Register EMEA as well as Inmarsat.

France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications upgraded its land earth station in Aussaguel, France to ensure that its Inmarsat-C and Mini-C services are SSAS-compatible. The SSAS heightens security on board ship in the event of attack enabling captain or crew to send out a ‘covert’ alert and rapidly obtain assistance. With piracy and attacks at sea becoming increasingly widespread, the IMO (International Maritime Organization) has designated that all ships exceeding 500 tonnes must equip the SSAS by July 1, 2004. The SSAS is a one-way, ship-to-shore security system available with compatible Inmarsat-C and Mini-C terminals. It enables crew on board to trigger an alert without the attackers’ knowledge thanks to a minimum of two activation points placed in strategic positions on the ship.

Thrane & Thrane introduces its new maritime high-speed terminal, Capsat® Fleet77.Orders for more than DKK 14 million have been received. Shipment of the Capsat® Fleet77 will commence soon. As the first manufacturer Thrane & Thrane will introduce a new maritime high-speed terminal for Inmarsat’s Fleet F77 service. The new terminal, Capsat® Fleet77, is a competitive alternative to the present Inmarsat-B terminals typically used on large merchant and fishing vessels. This is a new market for Thrane & Thrane and has an annual value of approximately $30 million. Since the Capsat® Fleet77 was unveiled at the Europort fair in November 2001, Thrane & Thrane has received orders for more than $2 million from approximately 30 distribution partners. Shipment of the Capsat® Fleet77 will commence soon.

In relation to the service launch of Fleet77 by Inmarsat on April 10, 2002, Thrane & Thrane is has started shipping Capsat Fleet77 products to its partners and distributors worldwide. "We have now been shipping Capsat Fleet77 systems to our distributors for a couple of weeks in order to enable them to demonstrate the product to the end users from the beginning of the service period" says Kim Bille Gram, Maritime Sales Manager, Thrane & Thrane. The Capsat Fleet55 is smaller, lighter and lower priced than the Capsat Fleet77 terminal introduced in March 2002. Northrop Grumman Corporation's Sperry Marine business unit today announced a partnership agreement with Thrane & Thrane AS under which Sperry Marine will market the Capsat Fleet 77 Broadband Satellite Communications System, designed to support the increasing demand for higher-speed data connections between ship and shore. Fleet 77 provides a constant two-way link to Inmarsat satellites, taking advantage of new-generation packet data switching technology enabling the ship's crew to integrate the vessel with onshore management systems via Internet-based systems from shipboard PC workstations, using standard software for e-mail and file transfer.

LandSea Systems has introduced a new maritime high-speed terminal, the TT-3086A Capsat® Fleet55. The new terminal is the latest member of Thrane & Thrane's Fleet product family. The Capsat Fleet55 is smaller, lighter and lower priced than the successful Capsat® Fleet77 terminal. Available from stock, the Fleet55 provides mariners high-speed and cost effective voice and data communications based on either MPDS (Mobile Packet Data Service) protocol with constant online access, or on a 64K ISDN connection. The new standard MPDS feature allows the user the ability to be online, all of the time, paying only for the data sent and received rather than paying for the time online.
