NYK and JERA have signed a long-term charter contract for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier to be built in South Korea by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.The vessel will be delivered in 2027 and will be used to transport LNG for JERA. French engineering firm GTT said it has signed a technical assistance and license agreement with China Merchants Heavy Industries-Jiangsu (CMHI-Jiangsu), a subsidiary of shipbuilding group China Merchants Industry Holdings (CMI), enabling the yard to construct vessels using GTT membrane technologies.GTT and China Merchant Industry Holdings have been cooperating for a decade, with a first Technical Service Agreement signed in 2013 for the maintenance and repair of LNGCs. A cooperation agreement has also been initiated in 2016 for the evaluation of CMHI to implement GTT technologies.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has been granted approval in principle (AIP) by Bureau Veritas (BV) for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel gas supply system (FGSS) for marine four-stroke dual fuel engines. The approval was confirmed in a presentation ceremony at Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Headquarters in Yokohama.The FGSS comprises an LNG fuel tank, gas supply unit, control systems and other relevant equipment. Qatari state-owned oil and gas company Qatar Petroleum has signed a deal to reserve LNG ship construction capacity in China in a deal potentially worth more than $3 billion.QP said that the reserved LNG carrier construction capacity would be used for QP’s future LNG carrier fleet requirements, including those of its ongoing expansion projects of the giant offshore gas field North Field.Qatar Petroleum struck a deal with and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).

Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that Bryan Caccavale has been promoted to vice president of strategic sourcing for the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. He assumed his new role this week and reports to the shipyard’s president, Jennifer Boykin. Caccavale joined Newport News in 2002 and has held leadership positions in contracts and pricing and business management. As Kennedy begins to take shape in the dry dock, the ship’s cost and construction schedule continue on track with significant improvement over its predecessor, the first-of-class Gerald R. Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) was awarded a $152 million contract for advance planning for the construction of the third aircraft carrier in the Gerald R. Ford class, Enterprise (CVN 80), named in honor of the U.S. Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65). The work, which includes engineering, design, planning and procurement of long-lead-time material, will be performed at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division through March 2018. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi visited Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), seeking increased partnership between the India’s shipbuilding industry and HHI. HHI is reportedly the only Korean company the prime minister visits during his two-day stay in the country. In a meeting at the HHI headquarters in Ulsan, Modi and HHI management discussed ways to expand cooperation on naval defense, LNG carrier construction and shipbuilding technology. The prime minister displayed particular interest in HHI’s range of naval vessels as well as high value vessels such as LNG carriers.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) today hosted Sen. James M. Inhofe, R-Okla., for a tour of the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. The senator, a military veteran, also met over breakfast with sailors from Oklahoma serving aboard the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Ford is under construction at Newport News and scheduled for delivery to the U.S. Navy in 2016. Lincoln is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at the shipyard until 2016. India's state-owned Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean firm Samsung Heavy Industries for technology partnership in constructing liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrying vessels, reports local media. “Cochin Shipyard has signed an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to collaborate on building LNG ships,” a shipping ministry official said. The MoU, which was inked after protracted negotiations will enable the city-based public sector yard to respond to a tender for LNG carrier construction soon-to-be-re-issued by GAIL (India). An earlier tender issued by GAIL (India) in this regard was cancelled in February this year after it failed to elicit any response.

Chinese officials have confirmed that the country is currently building a second aircraft carrier, say local media. The People’s Daily, the Communist party mouthpiece, quoted top officials as confirming the craft’s construction. The ship is reportedly being built in a shipyard in the northeastern city of Dalian, where China’s first carrier, the Liaoning, was refitted before going into service in 2012. Until now the military has tried to keep the second carrier a secret and at least two reports in Chinese media about the ship have been censored. The report also cited Ding Haichun, who was promoted to the position of deputy political commissioner of the PLA Navy back in January, as confirming that China’s second aircraft carrier is under construction.

Construction of an Arctic gas carrier for OAO Sovcomflot has begun under the survey of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS).The ship is being built as part of Yamal LNG, a major Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) project being implemented in the Arctic. The steel cutting ceremony for the pilot vessel was held on September 29, 2014 at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea. Head of the RS office in the Republic of Korea Alexander Yagodin took part in the event, along with representatives from OAO Sovcomflot. The construction of RS class cutting edge Yamal LNG gas carriers is a new milestone in the development not only of the Russian classification society, but also of the entire maritime industry, RS said.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division launched Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) into the James River for the first time on Sunday. The first-of-class aircraft carrier was moved to the shipyard's Pier 3, where it will undergo additional outfitting and testing for the next 28 months. Gerald R. Ford has been under construction in Dry Dock 12 since November 2009 and was moved about one mile south to the shipyard's Pier 3 with the assistance of six tugboats. The ship will be moored at Pier 3 to complete outfitting and testing.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division announce that with the push of a dozen buttons, CVN 78, 'Gerald R. Ford', sponsor Susan Ford Bales initiated the flow of more than 100 million gallons of water into the dry dock. Once the dock was flooded and initial afloat testing complete, water was partially pumped out and the ship returned to her keel blocks in anticipation of Ford's christening on Nov. 9. The ship will float again about a week later when it is moved to a pier for outfitting. Ford is scheduled for delivery to the U.S. Navy in 2016.
