Video: First Steel Cut for Aircraft Carrier Doris Miller

A steel cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday for the U.S. Navy’s newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Doris Miller (CVN 81).Slated to be the fourth Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, CVN 81 is currently under construction at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard in Newport News, Va. Doris Miller’s keel is scheduled to be laid in 2026 and delivered to the Navy in 2032.Doris Miller is the second ship of the two-carrier contract award HII received in January 2019 for the detail design and construction of the Gerald R.

"K" Line Secures Woodchip Carrier Contract

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) announced that an agreement has been made with Nippon Paper Industries Co. Ltd., on consecutive voyage contract of new 3.6 million CFT woodchip carrier delivered in 2022. Samsung Heavy Industries Wins a LNG Carrier

South Korea's shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has clinched a new contract  for a  liquefied natural gas (LNG) newbuilding.According to a press statement from the company, the contract is worth KRW 212 billion (USD 185 million). The newbuilding will have a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, it added.The ship will be delivered to an unnamed shipowner from the Oceania region by the end of January 2021, SHI said.The latest LNG carrier contract comes two weeks after Japanese shipping company NYK ordered an LNG carrier at SHI.SHI's new order total for 2018 now stands at 41 vessels and 4.9 billion USD. which include 11 LNG carriers, 13 Containerships, 14 tankers, and 3 special purpose ships.

Merseyside engineering firm IPS Marine Fabrications is helping ferry operator Stena Line expand its accommodation for man’s best friend after securing a deal to build a series of bespoke dog kennels. Rolls-Royce gets a repeat Sølvtrans AS order for the design & propulsion package of a ship developed specifically for transporting live fish. Russian Yard Expects Arctic-class LNG Carrier Contract

United Shipbuilding Corporation may build four Arctic class LNG carriers for the Pechora LNG project in northern Russia. Developers of the project, Alltech's President Dmitry Bosov informed that preliminary agreements had been signed with Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation for four ships with a deadweight tonnage of about 170,000 mt each, report Ria Novosti. The Pechora project includes development of the Kumzhinskoye and Korovinskoye fields in the Nenets Autonomous District, with construction of an LNG production plant, a gas treatment plant, and logistics infrastructure. Huntington Risks Losing $194 Million on Carrier’s Overrun

Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. stands to loss as much as $194.3 million, more than 40 percent of its potential fee, under the Navy’s latest estimate of overruns for the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, according to Bloomberg. Construction of the Ford, the Navy’s most expensive warship, is likely to exceed by $884 million the shipbuilder’s target contract cost of about $5.2 billion for detailed design and construction, according to Navy officials and the service’s Selected Acquisition Report, obtained after it was delivered to Congress on March 29. The Ford is intended to be the first in a $40 billion, three-ship class of carriers. Its rising costs have brought questions from Republican Senator John McCain about the Navy program and the shipbuilder’s performance.

Vinashin Inks Car Carrier Contract

The Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Nasico) under the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) on July 12 signed a contract to build a pair of ships, each capable of carrying 6,900 cars, for the Blystad group of Norway, according to a report on VOV news (http://english.vovnews.vn) The 200 x 32-m car carriers will be built to a design of DeltaMarin  under the supervision of DNV of Norway. Deltamarin Wins Contract for SUL Bulk Carrier

Deltamarin has signed an agreement with Chengxi Shipyard Co., LTD about the design of a SUL (Self Unloading) Panamax Bulk Carrier to be built for CSL International Inc. Deltamarin will take care of the basic and detail design of the vessel as well as the procurement support. The vessel is a derivative of Deltamarin’s revolutionary B.delta standard bulker designs with improved cubic capacity and markedly lower fuel consumption compared to competing designs. The ship concept for this new generation of SUL bulk carriers has been created by Deltamarin for CSL International previously. The good cooperation between the ship owner and Deltamarin resulted in many improvements to current designs of SUL bulk carriers.

Wärtsilä Wins UK Aircraft Carrier Contract

Wärtsilä will supply main diesel generating sets and their auxiliary and support systems for the Royal Navy's Future Aircraft Carriers. Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract for approx EUR 30 million for the manufacture and supply of the main diesel generating sets and their auxiliary and support systems for the Royal Navy's Future Aircraft Carriers (CVF) by Thales Naval Division on behalf of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance. The contract award was marked by a ceremony held on HMS Victory in Portsmouth Naval Base, UK, on 30 November 2007.

Fincantieri Awarded Carrier Contract; To Expand Facilities

It was reported that Italy's Defense Ministry placed a $757 million order for an aircraft carrier with Fincantieri SpA. The order for the 235-meter long vessel, the biggest warship built in Italy since the second world war, brings the order book at money-losing Fincantieri to 6 trillion lire. Construction will begin next June at La Spezia, in the region of Liguria, and the ship is likely to enter into service in 2007. The ship will reportedly be powered by four gas turbines built by Fiat SpA and General Electric Co. Separately, it was reported that Fincantieri Chief Executive Pier Francesco Guarguaglini said the company will invest 100 billion lire in the next two years to create a third shipbuilding yard in Genoa.

Newport News Wins $3.8B Carrier Contract

Newport News Shipbuilding Inc. won a $3.8 billion U.S. Navy contract to design and construct the 10th and last Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier, CVN 77. The unnamed carrier is scheduled for delivery in 2008 and will serve as the first transition ship to a new class of carriers, Newport News said. The company will also be responsible for delivering the ship's warfare systems, which was a task previously performed by the Navy. That includes development and procurement of the warfare system through a subcontract to Lockheed Martin Corp. and overall integration of the system into the ship. The carrier's warfare system will incorporate a new multi-function radar system and an information network that allows new technology to be inserted in a cost-effective way, the company said.

Australian Company Buys Into U.S. Inland Market

Towage group Adsteam Marine Ltd unveiled a $55 million investment in an Alaskan barge group last week, a move, which was reportedly designed to drive further growth through a foothold in what many perceive as the fragmented United States market. Adsteam also reported a 44 percent rise in net profit to A$11.44 million, said it was still on track to improve its full year earnings on 1998/99's A$17.12 million net profit. Lazard Frères Revises Newport News Estimate

Lazard Frères & Company Co. LLC's Equity Research Department has revised its earnings estimate for Newport News Shipbuilding to $2.55 per share in full-year 2000 from $2.60 per share, but continues its 'buy' rating for the shares. The revision is based on adjustments associated with the company's recognition of revenue from the CVN-77 aircraft-carrier contract. The CVN-77 is the last Nimitz carrier and is in the early stage of planning. Lazard Frères had originally projected Newport to recognize approximately $100 million of revenue in 2000, which represents preliminary planning and design work. Based on guidance from management, recognition of revenue is project to push back further than originally planned, with an approximate reduction of $30-50 million in 2000.

BAE to Secure Carrier Contract

According to reports, BAE Systems is set to secure a $4B carrier contract. BAE, which operates Clydeside yards at Govan and Scotstoun, has not won back the prized prime contractor role it controversially lost last year, but is nonetheless expected to take charge of the bulk of the construction work.
