Biggest LNG Vessel Sails to Turkey

The world’s biggest specialized vessel to import liquefied natural gas (LNG)  is scheduled to be operational in November to contribute to Turkey's energy supply security, Bloomberg reported. The MOL FSRU Challenger, as long as the Eiffel Tower, is expected to arrive from South Korea this month and start by year-end. Last winter, a cold snap gripped the whole region, including Iran, where Turkey gets some of its gas from. That meant the nation couldn’t get hold of enough fuel to meet its booming gas demand and the grid asked private power plants to reduce fuel demand by as much as 90 percent. A first floating storage and regasification unit, the Neptune, arrived in December to complement two onshore terminals at Aliağa and Marmara Ereğlisi.

Simulating Marine Collisions for a Safer Future

Image: BMT ARGOSS

Collisions at sea have always been a major risk for seafarers and while the exact numbers of incidents that take place across the globe each year are hard to quantify, the number is significant. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) reports on average six collisions between merchant vessels in British waters every year and for every collision reported to the appropriate authorities there will be many more near-misses that go unreported. Paul Morter, Business Line Manager…

LNG ABAS Blanket: Samsung Heavy Improve Design

Putting a blanket on is normally associated with keeping warm. In the cryogenic world of LNG, however, the ABAS Blanket maintains the liquefied gas at -162°C and reduces the amount of gas lost as boil-off and also reduces the pressure in the tank, explains RINA in 'The Naval Architect: October 2013. This is just one of the ways that SHI’s ABAS Blanket can improve the commercial prospects for LNG carrier operators according to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). Tank tests have shown that the ABAS blanket also has a dampening effect that slows the motion of the LNG cargo and reduces the impact pressure by around 20% says SHI. Changes to the links of the system have improved it.

OSV Sector Wary of Overcrowding

THE offshore support vessel (OSV) segment - touted as the bright spot where other traditional shipping markets are suffering - may entice tanker and bulk-carrier operators to jump ship, according to a recent Singapore Business Times article. However, OSV operators and owners are wary of such a crossover, and warn that if the sector gets more crowded, it may derail a recovery in charter rates that is expected to come about in two to three years' time. There are about 3,000 OSVs that support oil and gas offshore exploration - a sliver of the 70,000 merchant ships - but it is a sector that gained attention at a time when oil companies are expected to spend about US$600 billion in exploration and production activities.

Hual Increases PCTC Order to 7 Ships

HUAL, the Ro/Ro vehicle carrying unit of Leif Höegh & Co, has placed an order for two additional car carriers (PCTC) with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for delivery in 2006 and 2007 respectively. The vessels will have capacity to carry some 6100 cars and 7 similar vessels are now ordered from Daewoo. The first 5 vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2004 and 2005. The order forms part of the renewal of HUAL's fleet and HUAL is experiencing a substantial demand for flexible PCTC vessels capable of carrying high and heavy cargo in addition to factory new- and second hand cars. The vessels are designed with four liftable decks (plus 8 fixed decks) and 150 tons capacity on the main ramp. We find this design and size of vessel to be optimal in many trades.

Feature: The ISPS Code

John Riding, director of Marico Marine, speaking at Ship Repair & Conversion in London, presents a rosy picture for the future of ship repair by pointing out that freight rates have not been so high for years and some owners, such as bulk carrier operators are enjoying a rare opportunity to seriously invest in maintenance. The busy state of building yards means that "keeping an older vessel in service longer has great commercial attraction," said Riding. He believes that some repair yards have the potential to make a return for the first time in a long time. However, there is a fly in the ointment in the form of the ISPS Code. The code as has implementation date of July 2004 and applies to all passenger ships…
