Singapore Alliance Building Electric Tug and Supply Boat

US Navy Awards Maintenance Contracts

The Pentagon last Friday announced that nine companies have been awarded contracts for repair, maintenance and modernization of U.S. Navy’s non-nuclear surface ships homeported or visiting the Northwest United States.The total value of the multiple award contract is a combined $944 million. J. Lauritzen Orders Two Methanol Dual-fuel Bulk Carriers

Danish shipping company J. Lauritzen said it signed letter of intent for construction of minimum two methanol dual-fuel 81,200 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carriers, which will be built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, Japan, and be capable of trading with zero carbon emissions when powered by green methanol, and biodiesel.The vessels will be among the very first zero emission capable bulk carriers in the world, and they will be fully owned by a newly established entity named “Lauritzen NexGen Shipping” which J.

Financiers Turning the Tide on Shipbreaking Practices

The shipping industry has long been criticised by campaigners for allowing vessels to be broken up on beaches, endangering workers and polluting the sea and sand. Now, it is being called to account from a quarter that may have a bit more clout - its financial backers. Norway's $1 trillion Oil Fund, a leader in ethical investing, in February sold its stake in four firms because they scrap on the beach. Three of the firms excluded by Norway's fund - Taiwan's Evergreen Marine, Precious Shipping and Thoresen Thai Agencies (TTA) of Thailand - say they have been unfairly singled out.

RV Belgica to Undergo Electrical Systems Refit

System integrator Alewijnse Marine Systems said it has won an order for an electrical systems refit aboard RV Belgica, an oceanographic research vessel owned by the Belgian state. Prior to the assignment, Alewijnse carried out a year-long research project on a limited lifetime extension of the vessel. The refit will start in April 2016 and take several months to complete. RV Belgica celebrated her 30th anniversary in 2014 and renovations are necessary for the ship to continue in active service for another seven years.

Austal Launches 5th CCP Boat

Austal launched yesterday its fifth in-series Cape Class Patrol Boat (CCPB) at the Company’s Australian Defence Facility in Henderson, Western Australia. Cape Jervis is the fifth of eight 58-metre patrol boats that are being delivered to the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) by Austal as Prime Contractor under a design, build and in-service sustainment contract, valued at approximately $330 million. Under the contract, Austal is also using its in-house expertise to develop and integrate sophisticated electronic systems for command, control and communication. The launch ceremony marked the first time the boat has been lowered into the water.

Due to existing regulations on air exhaust emissions from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and with the European Union working towards an alignment with IMO MARPOL Annex VI, the marine industry will need to choose a path on how to achieve compliance, a choice that will have tremendous impact on shipping. Legislation has already had an effect on the fuel markets in regulated areas, as fuel prices are expected to increase even further in 2015 when the 0.1% fuel sulfur limit enters into force.
