Shell Marine has introduced a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil specifically for use with engines running on 0.5% sulphur content very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) ahead of the IMO sulphur cap 2020.With a Base Number of 40, Shell Alexia 40 has been developed to optimise equipment performance and condition as ship owners and charterers prepare for the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO’s) 0.50% global sulphur limit for marine fuels in 2020.Shell Marine expects most of the world’s shipping fleet will aim to comply with IMO 2020 by switching to fuels with a sulphur content of 0.5% and below.“Shell Marine can help ship owners and charterers be prepared as the world moves to a low emissions future.

Shell Marine has unveiled its next generation Shell Argina and Shell Gadinia trunk piston oils for the medium-speed engine market. As owners face pressures to shift toward cleaner fuels that address emissions regulations, Shell said demand for distillates and low-sulphur heavy fuel oil will only increase as shipping approaches a global fuel sulphur content cap of 0.5 percent, imposed by IMO from 2020. Already, dual-fuel engines are taking an increasing share of the medium speed market.

The shipping world has been settling down to new restrictions on sulphur content in fuel, introduced after January 1, 2015 in ECAs. Ships in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, and waters 200 nautical miles from the coast of U.S. and Canada now need to operate on fuels with a maximum 0.1 percent sulphur content. KG and Radio Holland Germany GmbH, part of Imtech Marine, have agreed a long-term maintenance agreement for the entire Ahrenkiel Steamship fleet, which comprises nearly 60 vessels. Based in Hamburg, Ahrenkiel Steamship Group is a leading, independent ship owner and provider of ship management services, with its roots dating back more than 150 years. In April 2014, the Christian F. Ahrenkiel Group merged with a joint venture established by the MPC Group, thereby pooling the fleet of Ahrenkiel Shipmanagement, MPC Steamship and Thien & Heyengathe fleet consisting of container vessels and bulk carriers. On Friday, Hamburg Süd celebrated the christening of its container ship “Cap San Antonio” at the Cruise Terminal of Le Havre, France, with customers and business partners. The sponsor is Veronika Schüller, wife of Prof Dr Stephan Schüller, Chairman of the General Partners of Bankhaus Lampe KG. The “Cap San Antonio” is one of a series of six new ships of the “Cap San” class built for Hamburg Süd at the Korean yard Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan. All newbuildings of this class each have a nominal slot capacity of 9,600 TEU, making them the shipping group’s largest vessels. With 2,100 container plugs, they have the largest reefer capacity worldwide, thereby underscoring one of Hamburg Süd’s core competences in the transport of refrigerated cargo.

Unlike conventional cylinder oils, it can be used across a wide range of vessel and engine types, fuel specifications, loads and climates– from the Antarctic to the Amazon to the Suez Canal. This means vessels no longer need to carry multiple oils. Shell Alexia S4 also works effectively at any vessel speed, including slow and ultra slow– especially important to modern ships that have to vary speeds to reduce fuel consumption and meet strict timetables.

Rolls-Royce opened a new Marine Service Center in the Port of Hamburg, Germany. The investment marks the latest stage in the development of a global marine service network. This year, with Hamburg, four new or expanded Marine Service Centres have been opened in major world ports. The Group now has dedicated marine sales and overhaul facilities in 35 countries, providing round-the-clock support to customers worldwide. This new facility further increases the Rolls-Royce footprint in Germany, a strategic market, where the Group already employs around 3,200 people at two aerospace production facilities and a state-of-the-art mechanical testing facility.
