On Saturday, February 28, the 570-ft. chemical tanker Bow Mariner apparently caught fire and exploded about 50 miles off the coast off Chincoteague, Virginia. As of Monday, March 1, only nine of the 27 crew have been accounted for; six alive and three dead, while it appears that the search for the remaining 18 crew members will be called off. The tanker was carrying a reported 3.5 million gallons of industrial grade ethanol, and an estimated 193,000 gallons of bunker fuel. It exploded shortly after 6 p.m. and sank at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Singapore-flagged was owned by Odfjell and operated by Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises Ltd. in Greece. It was transiting from New York to Houston with 24 Filipino and three Greek crewmembers.

The 768.8 x 111.7 x 32.8 ft. (234.3 x 34 x 10 m), 48,454 dwt LNG tanker Methane Artic visited Blohm + Voss Repair dock in the late spring. The yard was also kept extremely busy with other classes of vessels ranging from lpg carriers, livestock carriers through to RoRos, dredgers and general cargo. During this third quarter over a hundred specifications were received from owners around the world with a contact award success rate of 26%.

Euronav announced the conclusion of negotiations between the representatives of Tanklog Ltd. and Euronav pursuant to which there will be a merger of the assets of Tanklog Ltd. into Euronav. Tanklog is a major player in the Suezmax sector with a fleet consisting of 14 modern double Hull Suezmax tankers, of which 5 are under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea with deliveries scheduled in 2006 and 2007 and 2 modern double Hull Aframax tankers. The Tanklog fleet is under the management of Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises Limited in Greece and is under long term contractual arrangements with major independent U.S. refiners. The transaction will take the form of an acquisition by Euronav of the assets of Tanklog valued in excess of USD 1 billion.

The executive committee of Euronav NV announced its appointment of Mr. Jonathan Lee as the Commercial Manager of Euronav NV. Lee joined the company in January 3, 2006, and as commercial manager, will be responsible for the company’s commercial transactions including chartering both in and out, as well as sales and purchases. Lee brings over 20 years of shipping experience and expertise to the Euronav. Norway's Odfjell ASA and Greece's Ceres Hellenic Shipping will merge their chemical transport assets to create the world's largest fleet of clean tanker tonnage. The transaction, a combined $360 million investment, will create a combined fleet of 92 ships, of which 49 would be wholly or partly owned, company officials said. Odfjell will issue 4.9 million shares to Ceres, worth about $121 million, in exchange for nine chemical tankers totaling 335,000 dwt and four ships totaling 160,000 dwt to be delivered in 2001-2002. Odfjell will also purchase all the shares in Ceres' chemical tanker company Seachem and remaining Seachem ships in its 23 vessel fleet would be managed by the combined group.
