Port of Tallinn Enacts New Rules for Hull Cleaning

Estonia's Port of Tallinn has implemented new rules requiring the collection of residue from underwater hull cleaning operations while in port.Ellen Kaasik, the port's environmental manager, said the measures are part of a major activity plan to decrease the environmental impact of the port and ships, and that the decision to collect all hull cleaning residue was made to help tackle eutrophication.Hull cleaning service in the Port of Tallinn can only be provided with permission from the Vessel Traffic Shift Manager…

Russia's Rosneft Signs Oil and Gas Deal with China

Russian oil giant Rosneft said that China National Chemical, known as ChemChina, agreed to purchase 2.4 million tons a year of crude oil. That amount is equivalent to 6% of Rosneft's total exports to China in 2017.Crude oil from Eastern Siberia will be transported to a Russian Far East port by pipeline and will reach China via Russia’s Pacific port of Kozmino.The deal allows for increasing crude oil supplies to China’s market, which is a strategic one for Rosneft, the Russian company said in press release."Conclusion of the contract will lead to an increase in direct supplies of oil to the strategic Chinese market and ensure a guaranteed cost-effective export channel for the Company's crude sales," said the release.ChemChina is one of the largest petrochemical companies in the world.

US Navy Ship En Route to Receive Syrian Chemical Weapons

U.S. motor vessel Cape Ray departed Rota, Spain, this morning en route to the port of Gioia Tauro, Italy, where the ship will receive declared Syrian chemical weapons transferred from the Danish vessel Ark Futura, the U.S. Navy announced today in a press release. MAN Propulsion System for New GEFO Tanker

MAN Diesel & Turbo has supplied a complete propulsion system comprising a 7L32/44CR engine, Renk gears and an Alpha adjustable CP propeller for an ultra-modern chemicals tanker operated by GEFO Gesellschaft für Öltransporte mbH. For MAN Diesel & Turbo, the order represents a breakthrough for the 32/44CR series in the small twin-hulled tanker sector of the market. The tanker, christened Fidelio, has a DWT of 6366 and can transport 260 types of (petro-) chemical materials – from vegetable oil to sulfuric acid. The Fidelio’s main routes will be in northern Europe, however the tanker is also equipped for worldwide operation and therefore complies with the strict emissions regulations enforced in US coastal waters.

Third Shipment of Chemical Materieals Exits Syria

The Danish-led maritime Task Group participating in Operation RECSYR successfully shipped out the third batch of chemical materials from the Syrian Arab Republic. The third shipment of chemical materials from the Syrian Arab Republic was successfully shipped out by the participating international maritime forces in support of the UN-OPCW Joint Mission to the Syrian Arab Republic as mandated by UN Security Resolution 2118. The chemical materials were verified by UN Joint Mission personnel before being loaded onto the Norwegian merchant vessel TAIKO in the Syrian port of Latakia.

The 'MV Cape Ray' has arrived at Rota, Spain, for a port visit while en route to aid in removal of Syrian chemical materials, Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren informs the American Forces Press Service. The vessel -- part of the Transportation Department Maritime Administration's Ready Reserve Force program -- left Portsmouth, Va., Jan. 27, 2014. Hundreds of government and contract personnel worked for several months to prepare the vessel to neutralize Syrian chemical materials and precursors using hydrolysis technology.

The U.S. Department of Defense announce that the deployment of 'M/V Cape Ray' from Portsmouth, Va. 'M/V Cape Ray' is the primary contribution of the Department of Defense toward international efforts to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons material program. All waste from the hydrolysis process on M/V Cape Ray will be safely and properly disposed of at commercial facilities to be determined by the OPCW. No hydrolysis byproducts will be released into the sea or air. M/V Cape Ray will comply with all applicable international laws, regulations, and treaties.
