KR Certifies First Cyber Security Compliant Vessel

Korean Register (KR) has completed a comprehensive cyber security survey of the chemical/oil tanker SONGA HAWK and has certified the ship to be fully compliant in all areas, the very first ship to achieve the certification.Songa Ship management manages and operates 18 chemical/oil tankers and five semi-submersible vessels. The company signed a cyber security contract (valid for five years) with KR in 2018, covering its fleet of 23 vessels.KR conducted a cyber security audit of Songa Ship management and certified the company to be fully compliant in all areas in 2019…

Schottel Enters the Tanker Segment

Schottel recently received an order to supply two EcoPellers and a bow thruster for installation in a chemical/oil tanker. The tanker will be built at Chinese shipyard Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding and will be operated by a European owner.The 120 m x 21 m vessel is powered by an electric motor, which is vertically integrated into the azimuth thruster. The propulsion system of the tanker consists of two Schottel Rudder EcoPellers type SRE 460 L FP with an input power of 2,000 kW each and one Schottel Transverse Thruster type STT 170 FP.

The 570-foot Singapore-flagged chemical & oil tanker Bow Mariner sank 15 years ago when the ship caught fire and sustained two explosions, resulting in the deaths of 21 out of 27 crew members, 45-miles off the coast of Virginia, Feb. 28, 2004.The vessel was transporting over three million gallons of ethyl alcohol on a voyage from New York to Texas. Caterpillar Marine Plans LNG Test Site

With eyes on the future of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the maritime sector, Caterpillar Marine said it will unveil a first-of-its-kind LNG test bed for gas-fuelled engines at its facility in Kiel, Germany where the company will aim to improve understanding of related technology and enhance its services to clients adopting LNG solutions. Russia Confirms Tanker Seized by Niger Delta Militants

Russia’s embassy in Nigeria confirmed on Thursday that the Greek-owned oil tanker Leon Dias has been hijacked in the Gulf of Guinea, reports TASS. There are reports that the oil tanker hijacked by suspected militants from the Niger Delta has been freed and is now located some 7.5 nautical miles near the Cotonou Port in Benin. The merchant ship, MT LEON DIAS that was allegedly hijacked by gunmen is current off the Coast of Cotonou in the Benin Republic. To meet growing bandwidth usage and Internet demand onboard its tanker fleet, RHL Hamburger Lloyd Tanker GmbH & Co. KG, of Hamburg, Germany, an international shipping company known for managing sophisticated, innovative tankers, has chosen KVH Industries, Inc., for its mini-VSAT Broadband satellite communications solution. Twelve oil and chemical tankers will be outfitted with KVH’s TracPhone V7-IP satellite antenna systems in the next month, with a potential for 16 additional container vessels to receive KVH systems.

Pirates: Second Tanker Attacked Off Oman

According to a Reuters report, a chemical oil tanker thwarted a hijack attempt by pirates near the Omani port of Salalah Sunday, a day after a tanker and crew were taken from inside the port in front of the coast guard. According to reports cited in the Reuters story, a pirate skiff fired on the chemical tanker, but its efforts were defeated by evasive manuevers. On Saturday, pirates took the empty MV Fairchem Bogey chemical oil tanker from its anchorage at the port in the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, taking 21 Indian crew members hostage and heading to Somalia. Great Ship - Silver River

Designed for the economical, international and ecological transport of oil and chemicals, Silver River, constructed by German-based Lindenau was delivered to one of the largest Chinese shipowners - China Changjiang Shipping Group on June 26, 1999. Classed by Germanischer Lloyd as a Chemical/Oil Tanker, the vessel is the third out of a four-part series built within 1.5 years by Lindenau. This newbuilding, which joined its sister vessel Gold River delivered on March 1, 1999, is a member of Lindenau's Tanker Class 2000 featuring internationally patented Lindenau bulbous bows - allowing the vessels to reach speeds of 14.8 knots at a constant engine output of 2,920 kW.
