Oil Spill Response: SCOPE 2017
Later this year a major oil and chemical protection exercise dubbed SCOPE 2017 will be carried out in Norway. A joint project including major European and Scandinavian stakeholders, the simulated response to a combined oil and chemical spill aims to foster clearer communication and coordination of spill response across agencies and physical country boundaries. Nordic Countries Partner for Chemical Protection Exercise
A joint oil and chemical protection exercise between the Nordic countries will involve more than 300 personnel and 30 vessels, making for one of the largest projects of its kind in European history. An increasing level of shipping traffic has led to a growing fear of accidents and an adverse risk picture. The accident involving M/V Full City in July 2009 on the coast of Langesund illustrated the crucial need for preparedness in dealing with accidents across national borders. Protecting Shippers from Ebola Outbreak
The IMO have reacted quickly in response to the international emergency recently declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) over the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In September the IMO issued an international circular ‘3484’ calling for a united response from the shipping industry to contain the virus. Specifically it calls for ship operators to define 'measures to reduce the risk of exposure' if they are likely to have ships trading to and from ports in Ebola-affected States.
Rolls-Royce Helps Power Combat Boat Success
Versatile, small high-speed craft are becoming an essential tool for modern naval and paramilitary forces, however the roles of these vessels are expanding. Rolls-Royce's Andrew Rice looks at the evolution of the Combat Boat 90. More than 10 years ago, revised Swedish defense planning called for a radical increase in the mobility of coastal defense forces. As a result, the Combat Boat 90 project began, developed by the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV). A concept that is proving to be a world beater. The prototype contract for two units required Swedish shipyard Dockstavarvet to produce all calculations and engineering/construction drawings based on the FMV project design. Within 10 months of contract award, trials on the first prototype were a success.
NAVSEA Warfare Center Product Area - Ships and Ship Systems
Product Area (PA) focus is the hallmark of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Warfare Center realignment, which provides the ability for a Product Area Director (PAD) to examine and assess similar work being accomplished across all surface and undersea warfare center divisions. PAs ensures a centralized entry for customers and for workload acceptance to increase efficiency by looking for redundancy of effort and duplication of capabilities; but, more importantly, it allows for the right work to be done by the right people at the right location. The Ships and Ship Systems (S3) Product Area provides the Navy with greater mobility, enhanced survivability, and improved payload capability through advanced technologies and innovative systems.
Bonhomme Richard Conducts CBR Defense Training
At Sea (NNS) -- Crew members aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) donned gas masks and chemical protection suits to treat mock mass casualties during a series of chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) defense drills recently. The drills are consistent with the normal basic-phase training routine ships go through to prepare for deployment, but according to ship Operations Officer Cmdr. Paul Shock, Bonhomme Richard is going through the training a lot sooner than most.
