US Names New Members to Maritime Transportation System National Advisory Committee

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg this week announced the appointment of 25 new members to the Maritime Transportation System National Advisory Committee (MTSNAC). The MTSNAC Charter will advise the Secretary, through the Maritime Administration (MARAD) Administrator, on ways to identify and address impediments hindering the effective use of short sea transportation. Severe Weather Led to Barge Breakaway, Bridge Damage -NTSB

Severe rainfall and flooding from a tropical storm led to barges breaking away from their moorings and striking the Interstate 10 bridge in Channelview, Texas, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a marine accident brief released Tuesday.On September 19, 2019, 11 barges broke free from a San Jacinto River barge fleeting area north of the I-10 bridge in Channelview during Tropical Storm Imelda, the fifth-wettest tropical cyclone on record in the continental United States.

Ingram Barge to Acquire Cheryl K and San Jacinto River Fleet

Nashville-based Ingram Barge Company announced Tuesday that its wholly-owned subsidiary Houston Fleeting Services has reached a deal to acquire the business assets Houston-based Cheryl K and San Jacinto River Fleet. According to Ingram Barge, the purchase allows it to expand its footprint into the Houston area and along the Texas Gulf Coast while simultaneously growing its logistics, dry barge and liquid barge businesses by adding critical infrastructure, vessels and personnel.

Boeing Unveils Robotic Submarine

Boeing Co. has unveiled at its Huntington Beach facility an autonomous, unmanned undersea vehicle that can be used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The Echo Voyager, which is 51 feet long, is capable of running on its own, unmanned, for months underwater while being able to dive to 11,000 feet. Echo Voyager is the latest innovation in Boeingā€™s UUV family, joining the 32-foot Echo Seeker and the 18-foot Echo Ranger. The Voyager is expected to begin sea trials off the California coast in Summer 2016. ā€œEcho Voyager is a new approach to how unmanned undersea vehicles will operate and be used in the future,ā€ said Darryl Davis, president, Boeing Phantom Works. Echo Voyager will begin sea trials off the California coast later this summer.

USN's 6th MCPON Passes Away

Retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) William "Bill" H. Plackett died peacefully the evening of March 4. He was 78. Plackett became the sixth MCPON Oct. 1, 1985. He relieved Billy C. Sanders and held the job for three years before Duane R. Bushey assumed duties in September 1988. Plackett was born in Paxton, Illinois, and joined the Navy at the age of 19 in 1956. He attended radarman "A" school in Norfolk, Virginia and was assigned to the Naval Control of Shipping Office in Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. He served tours aboard Commander, Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet embarked upon amphibious force command ship USS Mount McKinley (AGC 7), and Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy.

Riverboat to be Christened in New Orleans

American Cruise Lines announced the christening of its second Mississippi River paddlewheeler, the American Eagle, on April 25, 2015 in New Orleans. Mayor Mitch Landrieu will be the guest of honor and his wife, Cheryl Landrieu will christen the new riverboat. ā€œThe city of New Orleans has played an integral part in the growth of American Cruise Lines, and we couldnā€™t be happier than to have the First Lady of New Orleans, Cheryl Landrieu, to christen the American Eagle,ā€ said Judy Roman, Vice President of American Cruise Lines. The American Eagle carries 150 guests in staterooms ranging from 300-600 square feet. Of the 84 staterooms, 78 feature large private balconies, all of which have sliding glass doors.

Kirby Christens ATB in New Orleans

Inland and coastal giant christens ATB duo Jason E. Duttinger and Winna Wilson in an October New Orleans ceremony. The crew of the Jason E. Duttinger took a break from hauling coal between Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, and Florida on Oct. 30 as Kirby Corp. of Houston christened the articulated tug-and-barge unit in New Orleans at the dock of the Hilton Riverside Hotel. Both units were named in honor of two special individuals. Jason Duttinger was a senior transportation specialist at North Carolina-based Duke Energy when he died of cancer in 2011.

Hurricane Sandy's Coastal Legacy Lidar Revealed

Lidar confirms Sandyā€™s dramatic coastal change Impacts and future coastal vulnerability to US Geological Survey. The extent of Hurricane Sandy's wrath -- and the future coastal vulnerability of the region -- is clear in a new U.S. Geological Survey analysis of recently collected lidar coastal data. The research documented particularly dramatic impacts within the Fire Island National Seashore on Long Island, NY . Lidar, or light detection and ranging, uses lasers to measure elevations in a specific distance/area. Researchers used the lidar data, collected during an airborne survey, to construct a high-resolution three-dimensional map of before- and after-storm conditions.
