Canada To Study Ban On Pacific Ocean Drilling

An environmental group has criticized a move by British Columbia to study the idea of having Ottawa lift a 28-year-old ban on offshore drilling along Canada's pristine Pacific coast. An area near the Queen Charlotte Islands is believed to hold one of Canada's largest natural gas deposits, and business leaders in coastal region have said a drilling ban should be lifted to help the area's beleaguered economy. A report for the provincial government said there was enough public interest in the issue - especially in the effected area - that its future warranted examination. Northern Development Commissioner John Backhouse, who had requested the study into public interest in the project, said he hoped to have review process under way by fall.

First Orphan Basin Oil Exploration for mid-August

In mid-August, Chevron Canada will drill the first exploratory well in the Orphan Basin. According to industry experts, the exploration of the Orphan Basin could mean the beginning of a new and potentially lucrative phase of Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore oil industry. The basin is in an area that has not been explored before, where the weather is harsh and the water is deep. However, the potential is massive — the Orphan Basin could hold more oil than the Jeanne D'Arc Basin on the Grand Banks, which is home to the Hibernia field, the Terra Nova field, as well as the White Rose and Hebron projects. However, some caution that it's too soon to know exactly what the Orphan Basin may hold.

Chevron Postpones Newfoundland Venture

Chevron Canada Ltd. says its partnership has decided to suspend negotiations with the government of Newfoundland and Labrador and demobilize the Hebron offshore project team after failing to reach a development agreement with the province. The joint-venture partners are ExxonMobil Canada, Petro-Canada and Norsk Hydro Canada Oil & Gas Inc., a subsidiary of Norway's Norske energy and industrial giant. Toronto Star reported that Hebron poses a number of challenges due to the high degree of technical complexity associated with recovering heavy oil in a harsh marine environment. While project activities have been suspended, the co-venturers remain positive that activities could proceed at a future date after a deal is reached with the provincial government.
