Singapore is gearing up to host more than 14,000 participants from over 60 countries, this month, at Sea Asia 2015 — one of the region’s largest maritime conferences and leading forum for analysis and debate on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Singapore Maritime Foundation chairman, Michael Chia, said this year’s Sea Asia recognizes Singapore’s position as an international maritime centre and highlight the role the industry has played in the country’s growth. “The maritime industry, which employs some 170,000 people in Singapore and contributes around 7% of Singapore’s GDP, has played a key role in driving Singapore’s development and this trend is set to continue,” he said in a press release.

“The Middle East is a world-class centre of excellence for ship repair with a number of well respected shipyards already offering a diverse range of services. We are seeing new joint ventures between the region and Asia in the dry dock sector, with the Gulf set to offer the largest ship repair capacity outside of China,” noted Chris Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organisers of Seatrade Middle East Maritime. International and regional shipping operators, ports, financiers and maritime professionals will meet in Dubai at the forthcoming Seatrade Middle East Maritime (SMEM) summit and exhibition to discuss the opportunities and challenges that global fleet growth will present to the region as it steadily develops into a world-class centre of excellence for ship repair and refurbishment.

Maritime industry leaders have called for greater collaboration and consolidation in Asia to tackle challenges such as the rise over capacity, talent shortages and environmental sustainability, which are impacting the potential of the industry. Every two years Hamburg assumes the role of world capital of the maritime business for the duration of SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair Hamburg and a major meeting place of the decision makers of the maritime industry. Kuwait invests $1.2 billion in bid for Northern Gulf gateway for new port facilities as regional market competition intensifies. A recent World Bank report ranked Kuwait in 36th place out of 155 countries in terms of the movement of goods and services through its ports, but traffic congestion at existing locations has prompted significant investment into new facilities in order to capitalise on commercial potential and secure gateway status for the Northern Gulf region.

As Sea Asia closed at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore, it was revealed by the organisers that 12,167 people attended the three-day event this week. Over 90% of visitors surveyed agreed that Sea Asia 2011 is a leading and prestigious industry event. The number, comprising visitors, exhibitors, conference delegates, speakers and media, was announced as the dates for the next Sea Asia were confirmed.
