The first ‘saltie’ of the 2018 commercial navigation season is on its way to the Port of Duluth-Superior. The 656-foot bulk carrier Federal Weser is scheduled to pass beneath Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge by 10 p.m. tonight and is expected to start loading Monday morning at the CHS terminal on the Superior side of the harbor. If all goes according to plan, the ship should depart late Tuesday or Wednesday with 21,400 metric tons of durum wheat bound for Algeria. GTT and Korean naval engineering company DSEC have signed a Technical Assistance and License Agreement for the construction of GTT membrane containment systems. This deal addresses the requirement of clients wishing to fit membrane type liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tanks to all types of vessels (cruise vessels, container ships, bulk carriers or roll-on / roll-off ferries, etc.). Moreover, DSEC is already recognised for its ability to implement complete solutions including FGSS (Fuel Gas Supply System) and CHS (Cargo Handling System) systems. With this new cooperation, which broadens the spectrum of GTT industrial partners, shipyards no longer have to acquire the know-how required for the construction of GTT membranes and of LNG handling systems.

ASV Global said it has converted a 26ft hydrographic survey launch to enable it to operate autonomously using the ASView control system, while maintaining its ability to operate in a conventional manned mode. Konecranes South Louisiana operations group completed a simultaneous replacement of 24 hoists in a tightly scheduled two-week service outage at the CHS Myrtle Grove Terminal outside New Orleans. Its South Louisiana operations group recently replaced 24 8-ton hoists mounted on two overhead cranes used to lift and replace top covers on barges delivering grain. These two cranes unload over six million metric tonnes of grain each year, which is then loaded onto export vessels for shipment all over the world.

The Port of Duluth-Superior informs it is preparing to welcome its first oceangoing ship of the 2015 commercial shipping season, the Kom, the first “saltie” to have made a full transit of the 2,342-mile Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway. The port said it expected The Kom to sail into port beneath Duluth’s Aerial Bridge shortly after noon today then proceed to the Superior side of the harbor to load at two terminals – Gavilon Grain and CHS. Built in 1997, the 465-foot bulk carrier which flies the flag of Malta, began this voyage in LaCoruna, Spain.
