Getting Started with Propane: Port-Side Refueling & Storage

(Photo: PERC)

Emissions regulations continue to become more stringent for ports, pushing more port authorities and terminal operators away from diesel and gasoline and toward alternative energy sources like propane. Capable of powering essential port applications like yard tractors, forklifts, and other cargo handling equipment (CHE), propane is available now to support ports in achieving emissions reduction goals. The Propane Education & Research Council often gets questions about what refueling infrastructure looks like and what to expect when transitioning to propane-powered terminal equipment.

Tapping LNG on the fjords

In the first application of its type in marine propulsion, a Norwegian fjord ferry is to use LNG (liquefied natural gas)-fueled engines as the prime movers for a gas-electric powering and drive system. While primarily an environmental initiative, the use of the 'clean' energy source also holds out the prospect of reduced engineering maintenance outgoings over the long-term. Although Scandinavia remains in the vanguard of 'lean-burn' technology, the plant for the 312 ft. (95-m), double-ended RoRo passenger ferry for operation in the western county of More & Romsdal will be of Japanese origin. It is claimed that the Mitsubishi gas engines…

MOL Launches Coastal LNG Transport in Indonesia

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Junichiro Ikeda) today teamed up with a local partner in Indonesia, PT Pelindo Energi Logistik (PEL; President Director: Denny Hermanto) to launch joint operation of the LNG carrier Triputra, which conducted the project’s first discharging operation at the Port of Benoa on Bali Island. This is the second coastal shuttle transport project following one serving for West Java(*), for which MOL securedan order in 2011. In that project, a vessel shuttle-transports LNG to the Port of Benoa, and discharges it to afloating storage unit (FSU) moored there. PEL, the charterer, is working to establish a gas value chain with the new method—transferring LNG discharged to FSU to the floating regasification unit (FRU) moored at the pier.

Daewoo's Financials Come Full Circle

A flood of LNG carrier orders and dollar-denominated payments skewed towards delivery have helped South Korea's Daewoo shipyard, (now known as the world's second largest shipbuilder) still under workout, craft one of the country's most dramatic corporate turnarounds. "It is like dreaming a really good dream," said a high level official at Daewoo Shipbuilding. "We are now nearly monopolizing the global market for LNG carriers and benefiting from the recent weak won better than our rivals because most payments are made at delivery," he said. In 2000, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering raked in orders for six LNG carriers - two each from Exmar of Belgium, Tapias of Spain and Bergesen of Norway - out of a total 14 orders placed worldwide.
