Proman Stena Bulk, the joint venture between tanker company Stena Bulk and methanol producer Proman, announced the successful completion of the first ever barge-to-ship methanol bunkering on the U.S. Gulf Coast.The JV tankers Stena Pro Marine and Stena Prosperous were refueled with methanol via barge while discharging clean petroleum products at a terminal in the Port of Houston in the first week of April.Stena Pro Marine was bunkered with 1,408MT of methanol, and Stena Prosperous was refueled with 1,203MT during the operation.

China's imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in November surged to a new record as the country briskly promotes the green fuel to clean its energy mix, said a report in Xinhua.In November, LNG imports totaled 5.99 million tons hitting a new record, rising 48.5 percent year-on-year, according to figures from the General Administration of Customs released over the weekend. The previous record was 5.18 million tons set in January this year, according to media reports.The report said that the country's appetite for natural gas has swelled rapidly in recent years, in part driven by environmental policies to replace dirtier coal-fired electricity generation.

South Korean state-owned Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) will invest 10 trillion won (US$8.84 billion) by 2025 to expand its natural gas capacity and infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles and other clean energy sources, reports Yonhap.Kogas, which has a monopoly on domestic natural gas sales,  unveiled a long-term business plan on the 35th anniversary of its foundation as it expects to play a greater role under the government’s energy transformation policy. APL has announced a 50.7% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per transported container per kilometer in 2017, compared to its base level in 2009. This achievement marks APL’s eighth consecutive year of improved environmental performance, as reported in the Business for Social Responsibility’s Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA) of APL’s 2017 carbon dioxide emission data. The CCWG EPA data was verified by Lloyd’s Register Group according to the CCWG verification protocol and principles of ISO14064-3:2006 standard. The LNG shipping market tightened throughout the third quarter, and rates increased sharply in October following gradual increases since May. This was due in part to strong LNG demand from China which helped to widen the arbitrage between spot LNG import prices in Europe, U.S. and Asia. This led to increased cargoes from the Atlantic basin and an associated increase of average sailing distances. The current market dynamic is supportive for a further increase in rates during a seasonally strong period of the year. It is also important to note that a relatively small portion of the global fleet of LNGC operates in the spot market (less than 10%), which can result in periods of increased volatility.

APL has announced its highest recorded fleet carbon dioxide emissions reduction of 48 percent in 2016, compared to its base level in 2009. From 1 January 2020, a new global sulphur cap on marine fuels will come into effect which will turn the whole bunker industry upside down; and World Fuel Services is urging the shipping, bunkering and energy sectors to work together to meet this new challenge. The 2020 deadline for the new 0.50% cap, which is a significant reduction on the 3.50% global limit currently in force, was confirmed at the 70th session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). This will be a huge undertaking but it is not unexpected. The industry has already had many years to prepare for this reckoning.

The electricity generated by these turbines could power 3,000 homes.

The provisional winner of the lease sale, which auctioned two leases for a Wind Energy Area of 164,750 acres offshore Rhode Island and Massachusetts for wind energy development, is Deepwater Wind New England, LLC. When built, these areas could generate enough combined energy to power more than one million homes. “When you think about the enormous energy potential that Atlantic wind holds, this is a major milestone for our nation,” said Secretary Jewell.
