Coast Guard Cutter Elm Heads to Baltimore for Overhaul
The 20-year-old U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Elm is scheduled to make its way to the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore this month for a planned major dry dock overhaul. The cutter’s departure from Atlantic Beach, N.C. will mark its last from its current homeport. After the overhaul work is completed, the Elm will report to a new homeport in Astoria, Oregon. Coast Guard Cutter Maple, which is presently undergoing a midlife overhaul of its own, will replace the Elm in Atlantic Beach this April.
USCG, Navy Conduct Joint Maritime Security Mission
The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy completed an 18-day joint mission in the Central and South Pacific under the Oceania Maritime Security Initiative to combat transnational crimes, enforce fisheries laws and enhance regional security. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment 103 from Pacific Tactical Law Enforcement Team embarked USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) and conducted 16 fisheries enforcement boardings with the assistance of the ship’s visit, board, search and seizure team and law enforcement ship riders from Tuvalu and Nauru.
Interview: Aaron Smith Zeroes in on the Offshore Sector
As the Executive Director for the Offshore Supply Vessel Dynamic Positioning Authority (OSVDPA), Aaron Smith is charged with managing the day-to-day operation of the Authority. Along with the OSVDPA Board of Directors and Technical Advisory Council (TAC), Aaron has helped to craft the Authority’s dynamic positioning operator (DPO) certification program. This includes ensuring that the program is ultimately accepted by the offshore energy industry, and its many international and domestic counterparts.
Coast Guard Working to Gain Experience with Wind Turbines
The Coast Guard installed a Skystream 3.7 wind turbine which is estimated to produce approximately 10 percent electrical load and help the Coast Guard gain experience working with renewable energy and assess wind turbines use at remote Coast Guard sites in Alaska at Station Juneau Monday, Oct. 11, 2010. The Coast Guard Partnership in Education program and State of Alaska Wind for Schools program is also working with the Juneau school District to provide data from the turbines and educational opportunities for students to learn about wind energy. News: USCG Oks Barge Security Plan
The American Waterways Operators' (AWO) Model Vessel Security Plan for the American tugboat, towboat and barge industry has been approved by the United States Coast Guard. AWO developed the security plan after 9/11 to protect people and property and prevent vessels from being used as weapons of mass destruction. The Model Plan was developed in close consultation with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by a special AWO Security Working Group. The Plan serves as a template for company-specific procedures to prevent terrorism in the categories of Awareness, Training, Personnel Practices, Planning, and Emergency Response. The plan lists both required and suggested actions to take, depending on the threat level, with regard to physical security, communications, and cargo.
