ABS to Class Scripps' New Research Vessel

A hydrogen-fueled research vessel commissioned by the University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography will be built to ABS Class.Designed by Glosten, the vessel will feature a new hydrogen-hybrid propulsion system that integrates hydrogen fuel cells alongside a conventional diesel-electric power plant, enabling zero-emission operations. Glosten Tapped to Design Scripps' New Hydrogen-hybrid Research Vessel

UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography today announced that naval architecture and marine engineering company Glosten has been selected as the naval architect for the university’s new California coastal research vessel. Geo Shipyard Delivers R/V Apalachee

Geo Shipyard Inc, New Iberia, La, delivered the R/V Apalachee, a 64x21x9’, aluminum catamaran for Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory, St Teresa, Florida. Designed by Fyffe Yachts with NC lofting by Eli Ring, VP of Advance Fabricating, both of Kemah, Texas, the 48 passenger T-boat will support a verity of research missions in the Gulf of Mexico. Designed by Fyffe Yachts with NC lofting by Eli Ring, VP of Advance Fabricating, both of Kemah, Texas, the 48 passenger T-boat will support various research functions in the Gulf of Mexico. Power for the new boat is supplied by a pair of John Deere 6135 SFM engines rated at 500 hp at 1900 rpm from Allemand Industries, Harvey, La. The six cylinder engines turn Twin Disc MGX-5114 SC gear boxes, Driveline Service of Portland shafts and ZF 36-inch diameter nybral four-blade propellers.

Offshore Design: The Future is Now

The maritime industry has an image problem. Perceived to be an aging industry, many players in the maritime niche deal daily with the very real problem of replenishing its employment ranks, from desk jobs designing and operating vessels, to those at sea and in the construction yards. While the problem is multi-faceted and without a clear solution, this article is not about problems. It's about hope and the future. Traditional industries such as maritime are often lost to the youth, as higher-profile, more glamourous opportunities are found in computing and entertainment, for example. Simply put, many bright minds are lost before the battle has begun.

Coast Guard Seeks Comments on Guidelines

In the August 6, 2002, Federal Register, the Coast Guard seeks comments on proposed assessment criteria to be used by Designated Examiners when evaluating candidates for licenses as officers of towing vessels, specifically when evaluating mariners' execution of certain prescribed tasks. These standards appear on the Department of Transportation's website. To access them, (1) go to http://dms.dot.gov/; (2) click on "Simple Search" on the bottom of the page; (3) type "12973" in the search box next to "Docket Number," (4) hit "Enter" on your keyboard. You will then see a page from which you can access the four (4) sets of Performance Assessment Criteria for Towing Officer Assessment Records ("TOAR") tasks. Once on the proper D.O.T.

Marine Partnership to Receive $17 Million

A five-year, $17.7 million grant to study physical and ecological processes in a poorly understood segment of the ocean off the coast of California and Oregon, will allow researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and three other universities to conduct this major joint research effort. It is the largest single grant ever made by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Called the "Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies on Coastal Oceans: A Long-Term Ecological Consortium," or "PISCO," the group is already beginning studies of a 1,200-mile long zone of near-shore that, until now, has been largely ignored by both oceanographers and marine ecologists.
