SUNY Maritime Plots its Financial Course

On December 21, Rear Admiral Michael Alfultis, president of SUNY Maritime, signed two agreements setting SUNY Maritime College on a new course for success. The College and the Fort Schuyler Maritime Alumni Association are now partners for the benefit of the College, its students and its alumni. On the same day, the SUNY Maritime Foundation was launched publicly to support the College’s strategic initiatives, to expand its reach and to support its goal of developing additional resources.

Bryceon Sumner has joined Foss Maritime as chief financial officer, hired to oversee all aspects of the organization's financial function and performance. Sumner brings to the role years of experience gained at a number of organizations ranging from education technology and real estate, to architecture and financial services. Prior to joining Foss, Sumner served as COO and CFO for public and private companies, family offices and as a senior financial officer of a $60 billion government banking insurance fund.

Maine Maritime Named Top 50 Engineering College

Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) has been listed in the rankings of the nation’s top baccalaureate colleges for the northern region in the 2011 edition of “Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. The college was also ranked among the nation’s top 50 engineering colleges in the category of “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.” Based solely on a survey of engineering deans and senior faculty conducted during the spring of 2010, Maine Maritime Academy was ranked 42nd in the undergraduate engineering category. Maine Maritime Academy was ranked for the fourth consecutive year in the section titled, “Best Baccalaureate Colleges (By Region)”.

IRPT, Community College MoA on Maritime Training

The Inland Rivers, Ports and Terminals (IRPT) Trade Association announced today that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Lewis & Clark Community College - National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) and the Mississippi River Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (MRTDL) Consortium. “IRPT promotes the education of the river industry professionals. We continue to see the need for skilled workers in occupations in river transportation,” said Hugh McConnell, president of IRPT.

SUNY Maritime College has been ranked by a national think tank as the top public college in the nation in graduate earnings, and for providing the highest value-added in mid-career earnings. A recent study by the Brookings Institution found that SUNY Maritime College graduates earned, on average, more than $121,000 a year in the decade following the completion of their degrees, more than their counterparts at national institutions such as Harvard and Yale. The Princeton Review’s annual college rankings place State University of New York Maritime College among the top 10 in the nation for career placement after graduation. US Coast Guard Academy Again Seen as One of the Best

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy has again been recognized as one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education. TWC Funds Training of 195 Mariners at San Jacinto College

Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) informs that its Chairman, Andres Alcantar, recently visited the San Jacinto College maritime training center to present a $368,173 Skills Development Fund grant for maritime job training. The TWC Skills Development Fund grant will fund training for 195 mariners from Buffalo Marine Services, G&H Towing Co., Higman Barge Lines Inc., and J.A.M. Distributing. Since the start of the San Jacinto College maritime program in 2010, approximately 2,500 U.S. Coast Guard certificates have been awarded to mariners.

Beating Corrosion Through Education

Maine Maritime Academy Honors its Best & Brightest

Maine Maritime Academy will honor its best and brightest at a ceremony to be held on the college campus in mid-November. The college will formally recognize student academic success and outstanding faculty at its annual Celebration of Achievement on Thursday, Nov. 11. In total, 24 individuals associated with the college will be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. The event, an ongoing tradition at the college, consists of several recognition ceremonies that are held jointly each year for the purposes of fostering mutual respect, admiration, and inspiration among all honorees. The ceremonies include the college’s Scheel Scholars and ABS Scholars presentations, and an Excellence in Teaching award.

SUNY Maritime Ranked a Top 10 US Public College

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College says it has been ranked sixth in public colleges in the North Region by U.S. News & World Report in the 2015 rankings of the nation’s top colleges and universities, released today by the publisher. The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings place SUNY Maritime among the top 20 colleges overall, and among the select best publicly-funded colleges in the North region. It is the eighth consecutive year that Maritime has made the coveted U.S. News & World Report top colleges list.

CGA Ranks Among Top Colleges in the US

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy continues to be recognized as one of the best institutions for undergraduate education in the nation. According to the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2015 publication rankings, the Academy is listed as No. 1 in the "Regional Colleges North" category. In the "Best in Undergraduate Engineering Programs" category, the institution placed No. 12 in the annual publication known as one of the oldest and best-known rankings of academic institutions. The Academy was included in the “America’s Top Colleges” list by Forbes magazine.

Maritime College to Honor Angerame, Bouchard

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College said it will honor two industry leaders at its annual Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner on Tuesday, May 6. The dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Vander Clute Hall on the SUNY Maritime College campus. All tables to the event are sold out. At the event, the College will honor Richard A. Angerame, Class of 1973, President and CEO of utiliVisor, and Morton S. Bouchard III, President and CEO of Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc. for their generous and continued support of the College and its students. Angerame has more than 35 years experience in the operation and performance of HVAC and utility metering systems.

Maine Maritime to Hold Celebration of Achievement

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy will honor its best and brightest at a ceremony to be held on the college campus in early November. The college will formally recognize alumni success and achievement, student academic success, and faculty achievement at its annual Celebration of Achievement on Thursday, Nov. In total, 16 individuals associated with the college will be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. teaching and academic commitment, student curiosity and scholarship, and alumni professional and civic success. Initiated in 1997, the college’s Wall of Honor was created to recognize alumni, who, through achievements in professional and civic life, have brought honor to themselves and to Maine Maritime Academy.

Va School to Introduce Training Center in 2008

According to the Daily Press, Tidewater Community College on Wednesday announced a new training center designed to help alleviate anticipated critical workplace shortages in shipbuilding and other waterfront related work. The Maritime and Transportation Center, set to open in 2008, will operate out of a building at the community college's forthcoming campus in Portsmouth -- training workers in everything from welding to truck driving, from computer aided design to port security. Shipyard workers are expected to be in great demand over the coming decades. Baby boomers are approaching retirement age even as Navy shipbuilding is going strong with an entirely new aircraft carrier class at Northrop Grumman Newport News and continued submarine building there.

KMSS Wins Contract

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has secured the contract to supply an Inland Waterway Simulator to the NOVA College – Shipping, Transport and Logistics Unit based in Ijmuiden, Netherlands. KMSS and NOVA College enjoy a strong business relationship, which has been strengthened further by this repeat order. KMSS has previously delivered two Polaris systems and an engine room simulator to the college and the flexible product and the customer support program that KMSS offers will keep the NOVA College simulation facility updated throughout it’s entire life-span. The Simulator includes 3 typical inland waterway cubicles all running the latest version of Polaris Bridge Simulation software from KMSS, which will be connected to the existing network. simulator technology.

Canada Invests in a Greener Coast Guard College

Canada’s government has invested nearly $11 million to date for improvements and repairs to the Canadian Coast Guard College. The government of Canada is investing $8.6 million to replace the college’s roof, addition to $2.3 million already devoted to upgrading the emergency electrical system, announced transport minister Lisa Raitt on behalf of the fisheries and oceans minister Gail Shea. The investments aim to further reduce the college’s energy consumption while ensuring it maintains international standards for marine safety and environmental response training.

NY State Senator to Address SUNY Maritime Cadets

New York State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) will address and preside over SUNY Maritime College’s Indoctrination (INDOC) graduation on Saturday, August 22, the college announced today. Senator Klein will address new students, their parents, family members, friends and supporters of the college, as 340 MUGS (Mariners Under Guidance) participate in graduation exercises marking the completion of their INDOC period. The swearing-in ceremony and Pass-in-Review by the incoming class will take place at Reinhart Athletic Field.
