China Addresses Increasing Shipbuilding Capacity

According to Forbes, China is planning to implement a licensing regime for the shipbuilding industry, in a bid to force outdated production facilities out of the market, the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND) said. Regulators recently released draft rules on the licensing system which is currently subject to public comment. Firms applying for production licenses will have to meet the requirements set in the rules. It did not say when the rules will take effect. China's overall annual shipbuilding capacity is expected to grow to 40 mln deadweight tons by 2010, outpacing the target of 23 mln dwt set by COSTIND, state media reported earlier this year.

China Takes Steps to Improve Shipbuilding Quality

China will implement its first ever market access regulations for shipbuilding manufacturers from Oct. 1 this year, in order to halt production of low-quality vessels. China Sees Record Ships Output

The output of China's shipbuilding industry reached a record 14.52 million dwt in 2006, making up close to one-fifth of the global total for the same year, according to official statistics. The Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (CSTIND) announced on Tuesday that the output of 2006 was 20 percent higher than that of the previous year. According to the CSTIND, China's top two shipbuilding giants, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), reported annual output of 6.02 million dwt and 2.67 million dwt respectively. The rest of the market was covered by local shipbuilding companies.

China Builds Shipyards to Drive Industry

CHINA will build three shipyards at Bohai Bay, the mouths of the Yangtze River and the Pearl River over the next five years, according to the national shipbuilding authority. The country will enhance management in the shipbuilding industry from this year to 2010 by speeding up the construction of three major shipyards, and by enhancing the development of new ship types, establishing modern shipbuilding models and developing the building technology for ship accessories, according to China's medium and long-term shipping development plans. It is time for China to further develop its shipbuilding industry, said an official from the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense.

China Ranked 3rd with 12 Million DWT in 2005

China’s shipbuilding capacities have reached 12 million dead weight tonnages (DWT) in 2005, up 36 percent year-on-year, to be ranked third largest worldwide, according to the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense, as reported by www.chinaknowledge.com. The commission said China received record high shipbuilding orders of 15 million DWT last year. The sales revenue of all the country’s shipbuilding companies reached a total of about $12 billion with an industry profit of more than $371.6 million and a ship export value of more than $4 billion. China State Shipbuilding Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corp., one of the country’s biggest conglomerates in the industry, built 5 million and 3 million DWT of ships respectively in 2005.

The commission said China received record high shipbuilding orders of 15 million DWT last year. The sales revenue of all the country’s shipbuilding companies reached a total of RMB 100 billion with an industry profit of more than RMB 3 billion and a ship export value of more than $4 billion. Chinese Maritime Industry to See Development

Reports indicate that China's maritime industry has been on a rapid growth path, according to sources from the 2005 China International Maritime Exhibition in Shanghai Friday. The combined tonnage of China's shipbuilding has ranked third in the world in a succession of 11 years. By the end of 2005, Shanghai will realize a total of 4 million tons in shipbuilding. As of 2004, China had built 34,000 berths and 1,430 ports in the mainland, eight of which have bounded into the world's 100-million-ton ports. During the four-day exhibition, about 1,000 companies from 28 countries and regions showed their latest and most sophisticated technology and service. For the first time, Spain sent a group to the exhibition and the German group registered the largest one overseas.
