NATO Seeks to Avoid Accidents in East Med Dispute

NATO is looking at ways to avoid accidental clashes in the Eastern Mediterranean while supporting German diplomatic efforts to defuse the worsening dispute over energy resources there, the alliance’s chief said on Thursday.NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told Reuters the Western alliance was considering so-called deconfliction measures to prevent naval accidents in an increasingly congested region, although he did not go into details.“I am also exploring the possibilities of NATO developing mechanisms to prevent incidents and accidents, a set of deconfliction mechanisms,” Stoltenberg s

A New Direction for DP

GE pioneers a friendlier operating system for mariners. GE’s Power Conversion business is bringing enhanced operability to the company’s Dynamic Positioning (DP) system. According to GE, the latest version is more energy efficient, better integrated and more mariner friendly. Defining that concept further, Paul English, marine leader of GE Power Conversion, told MarineNews in May, “We are giving ship control back to the mariners.” GE leverages more than 40 years of experience in its effort to reduce the burden of the technology on the operator. It’s a new direction in DP. It’s the mariner’s DP. GE’s latest DP offering is mariner-focused, enhancing situational awareness and rebalancing attention from system management to true seamanship.

CleanBallast Ready for Russian-Flagged Vessels

RWO's ballast water treatment system received RMRS Type Approval. Classification society Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS) has issued a type approval certificate for the RWO ballast water treatment system CleanBallast. During the international exhibition NEVA in St. Petersburg, Victor V. Grishkin, Senior Principal Surveyor at RMRS, handed over the certificate to RWO. British Antarctic Survey Chooses Invsat Networking

Invsat Ltd., the U.K.-based telecommunications systems integrator, has been awarded a prestigious contract to provide network communications for the British Antarctic Survey in one of the world’s most challenging environments. The VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) network is connected via the NSS-7 satellite to Invsat’s earth station based at its Aberdeenshire HQ. Stabilized C-Band VSAT systems are being deployed on the two ice-strengthened Royal Research Ships that support the British Antarctic Survey's operations in the region. The two vessels are the RRS James Clark Ross, which has some of Britain's most advanced facilities for oceanographic research, and the RRS Ernest Shackleton which is primarily a logistics ship, used for the re-supply of the Survey's stations.

Feature: E-Ship: The Paperless Trail

Paperwork is, and always has been a necessary and essential aspect of ship operation. Indeed, the Barcelona Maritime Code of 1258 required ships carry clerks specifically for this purpose releasing the master to concentrate on his primary duty, safely navigating the vessel. Unfortunately, such is the way of things few ships now carry clerks. Indeed, notwithstanding a mushrooming in documentation shipping is required to carry and use in recent years, notably at the behest of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the number of crew available to manage the workload continues to reduce, the burden increasingly falling on the bridge watchkeepers. To what extent this has an impact on safety is moot.

Global Offshore Pipeline Market by Region 1997-2006

The installation of almost 50,000 km of pipeline is forecast over the next five years in the new second edition of The World Offshore Pipelines and Umbilicals Report 2002-2006, published today by leading offshore analysts Douglas-Westwood and offshore data specialists Infield Systems. According to the report’s lead author, Dominic Harbinson of Douglas-Westwood, “This total represents an increase of 44 percent over the previous 5-year period, and will require a global Capex of almost $53.6 billion. Three regions dominate the market, accounting for almost 60 percent of forecast pipeline lengths and over half of forecast global Capex.” The three regions are: North West Europe (with a forecast spend of $11.4 billion), Asia Pacific ($9.5 billion) and the US Gulf of Mexico ($8.2 billion).
