KSOE, DNV GL Sign Low-Carbon Emissions MOU

DNV GL and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), a sub-holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding and offshore business, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate on the development of low- and zero-carbon ship technology. DNV GL Okays New Floating Power Generation Concept

DNV GL has given IHI Corporation Approval in Principle (AiP) for its FLPS (Floating LNG Power Station) concept. The formal handover of the Approval in Principle took place in Tokyo on July 5. The design has been found to comply with DNV GL class standards and other relevant industry standards. The FLPS concept is a combination of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) and a power plant. It is expected to be installed in locations where alternative onshore infrastructure is not feasible or commercially viable, while energy demand is rapidly increasing. The FLPS solution is also in line with the worldwide trend for decentralized power generation. It provides the opportunity for the receiving location to take advantage of the availability of natural gas as part of their power mix.

DNV to Class World's First LNG FPSO

DNV has been contracted to class the Petronas LNG FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, Offtake) vessel to be built by Korea's DSME. The unit will be built by DSME in Korea and is destined for the Kanowit field offshore Sarawak, Malaysia. It is expected to be the world’s first floating liquefaction unit in operation when completed in 2015. The Petronas FLNG will be 300m long and 60m wide and will be moored 180km from shore. It is designed to produce 1.2 million tonnes a year (mtpa) of LNG, boosting Malaysia’s total LNG production capacity from 25.7 mpta to 26.9 mpta. The scope of the DNV contract includes the floating structure, mooring arrangement and natural gas liquefaction technology. • ship-to-ship offloading equipment suitable for LNG transfer at sea.

DNV Issues Guidance on Offshore Gas Terminals

According to Conn Fagan, DNV’s Business development manager for offshore gas projects, the FLNG segment is developing rapidly. “A number of FSRUs (floating storage and regasification unit) and SRVs (shuttle and regasification vessel) are currently in operation, and many more floating import gas terminals are now in different phases of development,” Fagan said. Fagan said that while DNV’s previous Rules and guidance issued in 2007 were well received by the industry at the time, the rapid development of this segment required a fresh look. “We recognised a demand for an up-to-date, fully comprehensive overview of the many unique technical challenges faced by designers and yards in this segment, covering both design and construction,” he said.
