Technology and dynamic mission profiles have driven change in the defense industry, Hydro Group Plc Managing Director Doug Whyte, explores the changing paradigm of submarine programs, an evolving market he has experienced first-hand, with over 30 years at the helm of his own innovative subsea design and manufacturing group. My original business partner, Mike Redstone, previously worked for Vickers Slingsby which was involved quite extensively with the Ministry of Defense (M.O.D.). At that time, in the late seventies, close involvement with the M.O.D. was commonplace.

BIRNS Celebrates 60th Anniversary at New Orleans Show

Founded in 1954, BIRNS, Inc. designer and manufacturer of high performance lighting and connector systems for deep ocean, marine, military and nuclear power applications celebrated the anniversary at the recent Underwater Intervention show in New Orleans. BIRNS informs of a well attended event in its booth at the show to commemorate the anniversary. The event included a slideshow of historical company photos honoring the founding CEO Jack Birns, a former LIFE Magazine photographer, and the company’s achievements to present day in a presentation by current CEO Eric Birns.

Expro Wins £7.3m Power Connector Contract

Expro has been awarded its single biggest power connector order to date with a contract worth in the region of £7.3million. Aker Solutions, of Norway, has ordered high-voltage subsea connectors for the subsea gas compression system the company is developing for Statoil at the Åsgard field, which is located 124 miles offshore of Norway, in the Halten bank of the Norwegian Sea. The Åsgard project is a significant win for Expro as not only is it Expro Connectors & Measurements single largest power connector order to date…

Sea Technology Report

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the largest independent institution of its kind in the world, recently began developing a new piston corer for retrieving sediments from the ocean floor. Once complete in 2006, the deep-water coring system will be the largest in the U.S. and among the biggest in the world. The corer’s enormous weight — 25,000 pounds — coupled with the environmental demands associated with working in water up to 20,000 ft. deep presented major technical challenges to the system required to lower the corer to the sea floor then recover it, along with its ancient sediment samples.
