Global Shipbuilders Discuss Market Downturn
From 19 till 20 October 2016, top executives from major shipbuilders from Japan, Europe, China, South-Korea and the United States met in Gyeongju (South-Korea) in the context of the 25th JECKU, to discuss the industry’s challenges in supply and demand and in addressing regulatory matters. This year’s meeting took place under extraordinary circumstances, notably against a background of a global shipbuilding industry experiencing very harsh demand contractions. Newbuilding demand has been low in practically all market segments of the shipbuilding industry, with the exception of passenger ships. All delegations expressed deep concerns about the current world economic situation.
Global Shipyard Executives Meet in Okinawa
A global conference for shipbuilding corporate management gathered 74 top executives of the major shipyards from Japan, Europe, China, Korea and the U.S. (JECKU) to exchange views on global economic development, supply and demand prospects as well as important technological and regulatory developments to improve environmental performance of ships. The conference conclusions by Chairman Kazuo Tsukuda from the Shipbuilder’s Association of Japan highlighted that there are still a number of global economic uncertainties including energy security and the global slowdown of emerging economies.
Fincantieri 2012 Profits Up on Previous Year

Fincantieri Delivers 'Carnival Breeze' at Monfalcone, Italy
Of 130,000 gross tonnes, and at 306 metres long and 37 metres wide, the “Carnival Breeze” is sister to the “Carnival Dream” and the “Carnival Magic”, which Monfalcone delivered in 2009 and 2011 respectively. The Carnival Breeze is the thirtieth cruise ship to be built by Monfalcone yard. Present at the ceremony were the President and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines, Gerry Cahill, while Fincantieri was represented by both the company’s CEO, Giuseppe Bono and the Chairman, Corrado Antonini.
Shipyard Fincantieri Launch Multi-purpose Frigate

Antonini: Overcapacity Remains the Biggest Problem
In addressing a conference in Nan Tong which included 120 of the world’s leading shipbuilding executives from Japan, Europe, China, Korea and USA (JECKU), CESA Honorary Chairman and Fincantieri chairman Corrado Antonini said in his keynote speech: “Despite signs of recovery in global shipping, the situation of most shipyards in the world remains difficult as orderbooks still continue to decline while international experts estimate that at best only 50% of the newbuilding capacity could be utilized in the next 10 years. While current market conditions present a number of challenges, Antonini sees opportunities, too, particularly in regards to ever more stringent demands regarding environmental rules worldwide.
JECKU: Global Shipbuilding Leaders Address Challenges
One hundred and twenty leading executives from the major shipyards from Japan, Europe, China, Korea and the U.S. (JECKU) held a conference to exchange views on global economic development, supply and demand prospects as well as important technological and regulatory developments to improve the environmental performance of ships. The conference conclusions by Chairman Guanggin Zhang from the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry highlighted that although confidence in the sector is slowly returning it would take still some time for the world shipbuilding industry to recover from the great impact of the world economic crisis.
At SMM 2010 ‘Green’ Technologies Center Stage
Last month MR’s Henrik Segercrantz traveled to Hamburg for an exclusive preview of the SMM 2010 exhibition. The SMM international trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology will take place in Hamburg, Germany, on 7-10 September. This year much focus will be on environment-friendly technologies and products. The supporting program for SMM 2010 will for the first time this year include the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec), and the Offshore Dialogue, which will also look into maritime technologies for offshore mining and wind farms.

For two days, industry experts from all over the world will attend the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (GMEC) in Hamburg to discuss developments, to present results, and to set a new course for sustainable green shipping. Patronage for this event, which is to be held regularly in future, has been accepted by Chancellor Angela Merkel. From 7 to 8 September 2010, more than 700 leading representatives from industry, government, academia, navies, tourism and environmental protection will meet in Hamburg to discuss specific solutions for environment-friendly, sustainable shipping. The three Chairmen of the event are Micky Arison, Corrado Antonini and Spyros Polemis.

Antonini Re-Elected To Top Spot Of European Consortium
Corrado Antonini, executive chairman of Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has been re-appointed to the presidency of the Euroyards consortium for the next two years, Fincantieri said on Wednesday. Euroyards brings together the main shipbuilding industries of France, Germany, Spain and Italy in a European Economic Interest Group (EEIG). The consortium was set up in the early 1990s mainly to meet growing competition from the Far East. It is active in the development of joint programs in the fields of research, new projects and purchasing in common. Effective January 1, 2001, Antonini will also take on the presidency for the next two years of EDIG, the European Defense Industries Group.

Owners Seek Prompt Deliveries
Sembcorp Marine, which is set to announce third quarter earnings, is best known as a ship repairer, conversion specialist and builder of oil rigs. This week, however, the company announced that it has won a contract for two more 2,600 teu container ships from German owner Reederei F Laeisz at a contract price of US$42m each. The ships, which will be built at the group’s Jurong shipyard, are costing 33% more than similar units ordered by Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines last year. However, the German owner may yet demonstrate his astute timing, for the vessels are due for delivery in Mar and Sept 2006, ahead of the delivery dates available at most Far East mainstream shipbuilders.

The Steamship Historical Society of America presented the 2005 C. Bradford Mitchell Award to Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison during a ceremony aboard Holland America Line’s new cruise ship, the M/S Noordam on Feb. 21. The SSHSA C. Last month MR hopped aboard Costa Fortuna, currently under construction at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa. The 105,000-gt ship will be the largest cruise ship to ever fly the Italian flag, and the largest — in 30 years — to be built by the historic yards in Sestri Ponente after the Michelangelo, built in 1965. The company's new flagship will measure 892 x 124 ft. (272 x 38 m) and carry 3,400 passengers, and is due to enter service in 2003. Leading the tour aboard Fortuna was ubiquitous Carnival CEO Micky Arison and Fincantieri CEO Corrado Antonini. In a post-tour press conference, Arison defended his company's cornering on the cruise ship market, which may soon include the addition of Princess Cruise lines, pending governmental and shareholder approvals.

A Love of the Sea Takes Dreams to Reality
While this year's Sea Trade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami, Fla. offered up the usual fare of new innovations and ideas for the cruise industry, Fincantieri introduced not a new vessel or concept, but a book outlining the concepts and designs that the yard has based its European traditions. Rather than focusing on just the vessels themselves, Fincantieri's executive team, namely Executive Chairman Corrado Antonini and Giuseppe Bono, the company's CEO, approached the situation as an historical artifact. Therefore, the company sought the assistance of Fiora Steinbach Palazzini, a writer and communication consultant, who is also a professor at Trieste University.
