Emergency response crews are searching for a tugboat crew member that has gone missing near Sabine, Texas, Monday.U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston command center watchstanders received a notification at 6:10 a.m. from the tugboat Smith Invader stating a crew member was last seen at 10 p.m. Sunday and was noticed missing after a crew boat was supposed to transfer him off the vessel at 6 a.m. Monday. USCG Crew Hit by Laser During Training

A Coast Guard boatcrew was hit by a green laser light while underway near the Squalicum Harbor area of Bellingham, Wednesday night, ending a valuable training opportunity due to medical concerns. The crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat - Medium, from Coast Guard Station Bellingham, had to return to base and a backup boatcrew had to be called to stand the remainder of the watch. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound were notified of the incident by the affected boatcrew at 8:30 p.m. The incident cancelled the scheduled routine operations with a helicopter crew from Air Station Port Angeles. "Boat and helicopter operators can be temporarily blinded by green laser lights during night operations," said Cmdr. Brian Meier, Sector Puget Sound Response Department head.

USCG Oversees Tug Specialist hoist near Tappan Zee Bridge

The Coast Guard monitored the hoist of the tugboat Specialist near the Tappan Zee Bridge today. The Specialist was part of a three-tug group that was pushing a crane barge south on the Hudson River. The 84-foot long vessel struck a stationary barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge at approximately 5:30 a.m., March 12, 2016 and sank in 40 feet of water within a short period of time. One crewmember was recovered from the water in the immediate aftermath of the collision but could not be revived. Divers recovered a second crewmember’s body at approximately 11 A.M., March 13, 2016. Divers located the third crewmember on March 14, 2016 but were unable to safely remove him from the Specialist.

Coast Guard Responds to Plane Crash Near Brunswick, Ga.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said in a news release that USCG boat and air crews are assisting the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in a search for survivors of a reported plane crash near Grant Creek on Mackay River, east of Golden Isles Aviation in St. Simons Island, Ga., Monday. According to the report, Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders were notified at 7:10 p.m. of FAA reports of lost radar contact with a twin-engine plane carrying two people and subsequent reports from the public of crash-like noises near Grant Creek. Many government agencies and public safety dive teams are adding underwater search equipment to help make their operations easier, safer, and faster. Maricopa Sheriffs Department in Arizona, Downe Township Fire Rescue in New Jersey, the Fairhaven Massachusetts Harbor Master and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are a few of the diverse group of agencies using metal detectors, video cameras and sonars in their underwater search operations. Coast Guard Persues Hoax Distress Caller

The Coast Guard continues to investigate a probable hoax distress call that was received June 11, 2012, alleging a yacht explosion off Sandy Hook, N.J. Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service New York received the distress call at approximately 4:20 p.m., reportedly from the master of the yacht Blind Date, stating the vessel suffered an explosion with 21 people aboard. A massive, multi-agency search took place 17 nautical miles east of Sandy Hook, and involved two Coast Guard boat crews, four Coast Guard aircraft crews, response units from New York City Police Department, Fire Department of New York City, New Jersey State Police, and Nassau County Police Department. Good Samaritan boats also participated in the 5 1/2-hour, 638-square nautical mile search.

Hoax Distress – USCG Offer Reward

Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service New York received an apparent distress call Monday, reportedly from the yacht Blind Date, stating the vessel suffered an explosion, seven people were injured and all 21 people aboard the yacht had abandoned ship into liferafts. A later call to the Coast Guard reported that three people aboard the boat had died, and that several people had 2nd and 3rd-degree burns, and that people aboard were abandoning ship into liferafts. Coast Guard search east of Sandy Hook included two Coast Guard boat crews and four Coast Guard helicopter crews, who searched approximately 638 square nautical miles. Marad: All Safe After Gas Leak Evacuation

On Sunday evening, a gas leak was discovered in a hot water system servicing Barry and Jones Halls at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen and staff on duty immediately evacuated Barry and Jones Halls, which share mechanical systems, and two adjacent barracks. Emergency responders transported thirty-nine midshipmen to local hospitals for evaluation, however no one was admitted. The barracks buildings were ventilated, and a hazardous materials team from the Nassau County Police Department tested the air in the barracks to ensure it was free of carbon monoxide, and that the buildings were safe to reoccupy. Midshipmen were permitted to return to their rooms by approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening.

NY, Heating Oil Barge Runs Aground

A barge carrying more than 5 million gallons of home heating oil reportedly struck an unknown object and began taking on water near City Island, N.Y., at approximately 2:30 p.m., Jan 22. No pollution is reported at this time. The commercial tug Meredith C. Reinauer was pushing a barge to Boston, Mass., when they reportedly struck the object near Execution Rocks, N.Y. The master of the tug contacted the Coast Guard and reported the barge was taking on water in a ballasting void. The tug brought the barge to anchor off of Hart Island, N.Y. A Coast Guard 41-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Kings Point was quickly on scene to confirm that the vessel was not discharging any oil. Commercial divers from Randive, Inc.

Vessel Focus: Patrol Boats

Halter Marine has answered the call from the Venezuelan Navy for a variety of patrol boats. The company recently delivered four 80 ft. (24.3 m) boats to the country's government, which completes the contract for the design and construction of 12 total vessels in this size range. Designed for high speed operations in coastal and riverine environments, the vessels will be used for a variety of patrolling efforts in Venezuelan territorial waters, specifically to counter illegal drug traffic, provide search and rescue assistance, and disaster relief. Powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel marine engines, the vessels will have a range of 1,000 nm and a maximum speed of 25 knots. Halter also supplied the last two 54 ft. patrol boats for the Venezuelan National Guard.

Kvichak Delivers Patrol Boat to NCPD

Kvichak Marine recently delivered the second of a two-boat order for the Nassau County Police Department of New York. Marine 6 will join Marine 5 for patrol and rescue operations on the south shore of Long Island. The 38-ft. all-aluminum vessel has a beam of 13.5 ft. and replaces a 36-ft. fiberglass boat that operated in the NCPD for more than 17 years. "We definitely wanted aluminum construction for our new vessels," said First Chief of Patrol Robert Bishop. Twin Caterpillar 3126-DITA @ 420 hp diesel engines, fitted to Twin Disc MG507-1 reversing marine transmissions power Marine 6. The engines are coupled to a pair of Hamilton 321 propulsion jets via Spicer U-joint shafts.

Long Island Ferry Accident Leaves One Dead

In a freak accident that occurred in the Long Island Sound off the coast off Orient Point, L.I., a 65-ft. tractor-trailer rolled off Cross Sound Ferry's 250-ft. vessel, Susan Ann. The first signs of trouble began this morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., when, according to the Police Department, Town of Southold, L.I., the vehicle, a 1989 Western Star Tractor Trailer with the driver inside, broke free -- falling off the rear of the above vessel while in the Plum Gut area of the Long Island Sound -- east of its destination -- Orient Point. At the time, the vessel was performing a routine crossing from New London, Conn. to Orient Point, L.I. Upon discovery that the vehicle had fallen overboard, the crew of Susan Ann launched a rescue vessel from the ferry to recover the victim, Michael J.

Kvichak Marine Building Patrol Boats

Kvichak Marine Industries of Seattle is currently building two 38 ft. patrol boats for the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) of New York. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in May 2000 with the second to follow in December. With a beam of 13.4 ft. and a 2.6 ft. draft, the all-aluminum vessels will replace two 36 ft. fiberglass boats that operated in the NCPD fleet for 17 years. Powered by twin Caterpillar 3126-DITA diesel engines, fitted to Twin Disc MG507-1 marine gears, the vessels will be used for patrol and rescue on the South Shore of Nassau County. Due to the operating conditions the vessels will encounter, the NCPD chose Hamilton 321 propulsion jets over conventional propellers and shafts.
