George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) Upper Bow Lifted Into Place

Northrop Grumman Newport News lowered the upper bow unit of the George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) aircraft carrier into place Mar. 15. The placement of this 780-ton bow section completes the flight deck, and brings CVN 77 to its full length with construction now approximately 60 percent complete. The Navy awarded Northrop Grumman Newport News the construction contract for the tenth and final Nimitz-class carrier in January 2001. CVN 77 was named in honor of the 41st President, George H. W. Bush in a December 2002 ceremony. The carrier's keel was laid in September 2003. CVN 77 is on track to be christened in October 2006 and commissioned in late 2008. “This was the tenth and final upper bow assembly for the Nimitz class,” said Capt.

Keel Laying Ceremony for CVN 77

Navy tradition dictates that each ship constructed for the Navy be honored by ceremonies on four historic occasions: keel laying, christening (or launching), commissioning, and decommissioning. George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) will be honored with the first of its historic occasions on Saturday, September 6, at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA. The keel laying celebrates the laying of the first timber of a ship and can be traced back to the construction of early Navy ships. The present-day ceremony maintains the tradition, but has been modified because of updated materials, technology, and shipbuilding techniques. Following the ceremony, the former President Bush will initial a nameplate to authenticate the keel that will then be welded to it.

NNS First Quarter EPS UP

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) reported net earnings of $21 million, or $.63 diluted share, for the first quarter of 2000. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) for the quarter were $47 million, up from EBIT of $44 million in last year's first quarter. The company reported first quarter revenues of $469 million as compared to last year's figures of $430 million during the same period. This growth in revenue was attributable to gains in the construction and engineering segments. Construction revenues improved $25 million to $206 million as a result of advance planning work on the next aircraft carrier (CVN 77), as well as more activity on the Virginia-class submarine program.

NNS Awards $446M Contracts

Newport News Shipbuilding said that it awarded Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corp., a $446 million subcontract for the warfare system for the CVN 77, the U.S. Navy's next nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Virginia-based Newport News said it worked with Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance-Surface Systems, under an advance planning contract. The warfare system will be delivered as part of Newport News Shipbuilding's $3.8 billion contract from the Navy for the CVN 77 signed in January. The award to Lockheed includes an additional $40 million option for exterior communications equipment, Newport News said. Newport News shares were down 18 cents, at $50.52, during mid-afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. - (Reuters)

Newport News Wins $3.8B Carrier Contract

Newport News Shipbuilding Inc. won a $3.8 billion U.S. Navy contract to design and construct the 10th and last Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier, CVN 77. The unnamed carrier is scheduled for delivery in 2008 and will serve as the first transition ship to a new class of carriers, Newport News said. The company will also be responsible for delivering the ship's warfare systems, which was a task previously performed by the Navy. That includes development and procurement of the warfare system through a subcontract to Lockheed Martin Corp. and overall integration of the system into the ship. The carrier's warfare system will incorporate a new multi-function radar system and an information network that allows new technology to be inserted in a cost-effective way, the company said.

Lazard Frères Revises Newport News Estimate

Lazard Frères & Company Co. LLC's Equity Research Department has revised its earnings estimate for Newport News Shipbuilding to $2.55 per share in full-year 2000 from $2.60 per share, but continues its 'buy' rating for the shares. The revision is based on adjustments associated with the company's recognition of revenue from the CVN-77 aircraft-carrier contract. The CVN-77 is the last Nimitz carrier and is in the early stage of planning. Lazard Frères had originally projected Newport to recognize approximately $100 million of revenue in 2000, which represents preliminary planning and design work. Based on guidance from management, recognition of revenue is project to push back further than originally planned, with an approximate reduction of $30-50 million in 2000.

Unmanned aircraft accomplishes first ever ‘touch-and -go’ aboard aircraft carrier CVN 77. The Navy's X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstrator (UCAS-D) has begun touch-and-go landing operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush following on board launching. For UCAS-D, this represents the most significant technology maturation of the program. Ship relative navigation and precision touchdown of the X-47B are critical technology elements for all future Unmanned Carrier Aviation (UCA) aircraft.

GD Wins $17m to Support Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Repair Work

The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $16.6 million contract to support nuclear aircraft carrier repair work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va.  Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).U nder the terms of the contract, Electric Boat will provide about 100 skilled trades workers to perform maintenance and repair work on USS Truman (CVN-75) and USS George W. Bush (CVN-77). This contract will engage Electric Boat’s operations and support organization in Groton, which comprises more than 4,100 employees with proven skills and capabilities in final assembly, test and life-cycle support.

Dresser-Rand Garners Propulsion Turbine Contract

Newport News Shipbuilding has granted Dresser-Rand Company a $9 million contract for the initial phases of production of the main propulsion turbines for the U.S. Navy's Nimitz Class CVN-77 nuclear powered aircraft carrier exceeding a top speed of 30 knots. Dresser-Rand, Wellsville, N.Y., will construct four high-pressure steam turbines and four low-pressure steam turbines with a combined output of more than 250,000-hp. Each pair of high and low pressure steam turbines are in a cross compound configuration driving a 30-ton plus propeller through double reduction gears.

Northrop Grumman Propels Forward on Bush Carrier Construction

Northrop Grumman Corporation has finished installing the propellers on the nation's tenth and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, George H. W. Bush (CVN 77). The carrier is under construction at Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector, the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The George H. from previous Nimitz-class carriers. but the blades are shaped differently to reduce wear and erosion. Northrop Grumman. and complex overhaul. Other new design features for the George H. and a new underwater hull-coating system. The George H. buoyancy to the forward end of the ship and improves hull efficiency. The ship's keel was laid Sept. 6, 2003. October 2006 with delivery to the U.S. Navy in late 2008.

Electric Boat Wins Navy Order

Electric Boat Corp., Groton, Conn., is being awarded a $16,620,037 cost-plus-fixed fee order under previously awarded basic ordering agreement (N00024-10-G-4314) to support nuclear carrier repair work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard during on-going availabilities. This contract is for skilled tradesmen support to two chief of naval operations carrier maintenance availabilities. Scheduled to undergo repairs include USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and is scheduled to be completed by July 2012. Contract funds in the amount of $16,620,037 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, Groton, Conn., is the contracting activity.  

Commendation for USS George H.W. Bush Builder

The shipbuilders of Northrop Grumman Corporation (NSYE:NOC) were honored by the Virginia House of Delegates during a ceremony held on April 8 at the start of the Reconvened Session. The 2009 General Assembly adopted a resolution commending the employees of the company's Shipbuilding sector on the completion of the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier built in Virginia. During a ceremony on the floor of the House of Delegates, the final signed copy of the resolution was presented to a delegation of shipbuilders who worked on USS George H.

The christening will occur in October 2006 with delivery to the U.S. Navy in late 2008.

Future USS George H.W. Bush Arrives

The future USS George H.W. Bush, (CVN-77) arrived at Norfolk Naval Station from the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News shipyard on Dec. 23 to prepare for its upcoming commissioning. The movement was originally scheduled for Dec. 22, but was delayed due to high winds. The commissioning ceremony will be held Jan. 10, 2009 at Norfolk Naval Station. George H.W. Bush is the 10th and final ship of the Nimitz class and incorporates major improvements from her predecessors, including a bulbous bow, redesigned island, composite mast and three-wire arresting gear configuration. The future USS George H.W. Bush is commanded by Capt. Kevin O'Flaherty.

Newport News Second Quarter EPS Up

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) reported net earnings of $24 million, or $.074 per diluted share, for the second quarter of 2000. EBIT for the quarter was $54 million, up from an adjusted $47 million in last year's second quarter. Newport News posted second quarter revenues of $532 million versus $444 million the same time last year, reflecting gains in all business segments. The construction sector led the advance as revenues climbed to $227 million from $164 million. Increased construction work on the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan and the Virginia-class submarines, combined with advanced procurement on CVN 77, accounted for higher volume.

Bush (CVN 77) at Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector Saturday, Sept. 6. Former First Lady Barbara Bush will also attend with their daughter, Doro Bush Koch, the ship's sponsor. Other ceremony participants include Northrop Grumman Newport News President Tom Schievelbein; Secretary of the Navy (Acting) H. T. Johnson; Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Vern Clark; Virginia Sen. John W. Warner; and retired Navy Adm. James L. Holloway III

Northrop Grumman to Christen George H. W. Bush Carrier

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) will be christened on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Northrop Grumman's Newport News shipyard. The ship's namesake and 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, is scheduled to attend the ceremony and will become the first president in the history of the shipyard's 120-year history to participate in his namesake ship's christening. President Bush's wife Barbara and their daughter, Doro Bush Koch, will also attend. Mrs. Koch serves as the ship's sponsor and will do the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship's bow during the ceremony.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that its Newport News Shipbuilding division placed a 900-ton superlift into dry dock, continuing construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). As Kennedy begins to take shape in the dry dock, the ship’s cost and construction schedule continue on track with significant improvement over its predecessor, the first-of-class Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). “We continue to focus on reducing cost, and we are pleased with our progress,” said Mike Shawcross, Newport News’ vice president, CVN 79 carrier construction.

U.S. shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) said the structure of nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) is now 50 percent complete. The second Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier CVN 79 grew about 70 feet in length with the addition of the lower stern, which was recently lifted into place at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. Like Ford, which was delivered to the Navy earlier this month, Kennedy is being built using modular construction, a process where smaller sections of the ship are welded together to form larger structural units (called “superlifts”)…

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division has placed a 965-ton structure called a superlift into dry dock, continuing the construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). The superlift was made with more than twice the amount of outfitting accomplished as compared to the same superlift on Kennedy’s predecessor, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). The superlift, comprising two pump rooms, is 80 feet long and about 100 feet wide.
