Carl Vinson Strike Group Departs for Deployment to Western Pacific
More than 6,000 Sailors assigned to Carl Vinson Strike Group ships and units departed the U.S. West Coast, Jan. 4-5, for a regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific. The deployment marks the second time the Carl Vinson Strike Group will operate throughout the Indo- Pacific region under U.S. 3rd Fleet's command and control. Navy Selects Mikros for New Shipboard Networks
Mikros Systems Corporation, announced that it was recently awarded two new U.S. Navy contracts. The contracts cover follow-on work based on Mikros' AIRchitect-EMC wireless network design tool, "interference-aware" network design software which allows the Navy to optimize shipboard network design while avoiding interference with critical radar and communications systems. CVN 21 Program Manager Change of Command
Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Aircraft Carriers recently held a change of command ceremony for Capt. Michael Schwartz, who was relieved of his duties as CVN 21 program manager. In the same ceremony Capt. Brian Antonio assumed command as CVN 21 program manager. In a ceremony held after the change of command, Schwartz retired marking an end to his 26 years of service in the Navy. In August 2000, Schwartz reported to PEO Aircraft Carriers, as assistant program manager for Aircraft Carrier Refueling Complex Overhauls, and in June 2003 he was selected as program manager, CVN 21 Future Aircraft Carriers Program. Antonio indicated that he was proud to take the helm and acknowledged the importance of the program as it transitions from largely a design effort to a production effort.
100th Birthday of CVN 78 Namesake Recognized
Sunday, July 14 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Gerald R. Ford, 38th president of the United States. This was an important historical milestone for the country because of President Ford’s exceptional legacy of service, but also an important historical milestone for the Navy as we fittingly get ready to christen and launch the first of our next generation of aircraft carriers, the Gerald R. Ford class with the Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Former President Ford was born in 1913, around the time of Eugene Ely’s pioneering flights aboard USS Birmingham and USS Pennsylvania.
GTC to Supply Hardware for New US Aircraft Carrier
General Atomics Selects General Tool Company to provide EMALS and AAG for U.S. General Tool Company (GTC) announced today it has been selected by General Atomics (GA) to deliver $48 million in hardware for the U.S. Navy’s future aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) under construction at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division. This procurement will include Critical Safety Items (CSI) such as the motor support structures, trough covers and other associated components.
CVN 78 Ship Specification Signed
The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Program Executive Officer (PEO) Aircraft Carriers held a signature and awards ceremony on Sept. 5 at the Washington Navy Yard to commemorate the certification of the ship specifications for the CVN 78 Class Aircraft Carriers, which makes up the CVN 21 program. NAVSEA's Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate (SEA 05) led efforts, in cooperation with Northrop Grumman Newport News, the lead design shipyard, to develop the CVN 78 ship specifications with support from across the Navy Enterprise. The certification of the CVN 78 ship specifications marks a major milestone in the future aircraft design process and forms the basis of the technical data package used to prepare a ship construction contract.
General Atomics Wins Contract for US Aircraft Carrier
U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) awarded General Atomics (GA) an initial sole-source contract for Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) for the CVN 79 aircraft carrier to be named John F. Kennedy. This contract is for the initial procurement of the long-lead-time materials in support of a full production contract for installation of EMALS and AAG into CVN 79, the second of the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. CVN 79 is scheduled to be delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2023. Newport News Shipbuilding Hosts Sen. Inhofe
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) today hosted Sen. James M. Inhofe, R-Okla., for a tour of the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. The senator, a military veteran, also met over breakfast with sailors from Oklahoma serving aboard the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Ford is under construction at Newport News and scheduled for delivery to the U.S. Navy in 2016. Lincoln is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at the shipyard until 2016. Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin led the tour, which included a visit to one of the shipyard's aircraft carrier construction facilities, a demonstration of the virtual design tool being used to design Ford-class aircraft carriers and a tour of Ford.
HII Secures Aircraft Carrier Planning Contract
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) was awarded a $152 million contract for advance planning for the construction of the third aircraft carrier in the Gerald R. Ford class, Enterprise (CVN 80), named in honor of the U.S. Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65). The work, which includes engineering, design, planning and procurement of long-lead-time material, will be performed at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division through March 2018. Construction on Enterprise is slated to begin in 2018 with delivery to the Navy in 2027.
George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) Upper Bow Lifted Into Place
Northrop Grumman Newport News lowered the upper bow unit of the George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) aircraft carrier into place Mar. 15. The placement of this 780-ton bow section completes the flight deck, and brings CVN 77 to its full length with construction now approximately 60 percent complete. The Navy awarded Northrop Grumman Newport News the construction contract for the tenth and final Nimitz-class carrier in January 2001. CVN 77 was named in honor of the 41st President, George H. W. Bush in a December 2002 ceremony. The carrier's keel was laid in September 2003. For UCAS-D, this represents the most significant technology maturation of the program. Curtiss-Wright Awarded $14.6M in Contracts
Curtiss-Wright Corporation announced it has been awarded $14.6 million of contracts from Northrop Grumman Newport News to design and manufacture engineered pumps for use on the United States Navy's next generation CVN-21 Class aircraft carriers. General Atomics Receives Naval Grant
General Atomics, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $573,000,000 ceiling priced, undefinitized contract action for the production of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) CVN 78 Shipset. EMALS is the catapult launch system on CVN-78 class aircraft carriers, replacing the steam catapults used on prior generations of aircraft carriers. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., (49 percent); Tupelo, Miss., (19 percent); Mankato, Minn., (12 percent); Waltham, Mass., (4 percent); and various locations across the United States (16 percent), and work is expected to be completed in September 2015. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was not competitively procured pursuant to FAR 602-1.

Northrop Grumman reached its first construction milestone in the life of the new-generation aircraft carrier, CVN 21. The company cut one of the first pieces of steel, a 15-ton plate for a side shell unit of CVN 78, the first ship of the CVN 21 program. Design work on the CVN 21 is underway at Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector, with the full construction contract anticipated in 2007. Advance construction began in 2005 to allow shipbuilders to test the design-build strategy before overall construction begins in 2007. Each ship of the class is valued at approximately $8 billion. The ceremony also served as the grand opening for the shipyard's new heavy-plate bay facility, one of several new facilities built for CVN 21 construction.
